You can run a continuous YouTube Live broadcast of recorded Baptist sermons by sending a looping media source from FFmpeg to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube accepts encoder-based streams, but neither FFmpeg nor YouTube guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Plan for reconnects, protect the stream key, confirm rights to every recording and music track, and keep local sermon files: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. These are YouTube’s stated livestream eligibility conditions; check YouTube’s live-streaming help for current details.
  • A computer or server that can stay powered on and connected to the internet for the broadcast, with FFmpeg installed.
  • One or more sermon recordings in formats your FFmpeg build can read, plus enough upload capacity for the chosen video bitrate.
  • Permission to broadcast all content in the files, including music, introductions, slides, and other embedded third-party material.

FFmpeg options depend on the media and installed build. The command below is a configuration template, not a tested, copy-ready recipe; input looping, timestamps, scaling, audio handling, and encoding settings need to be selected for your actual files.

Prepare the sermon recordings and confirm broadcast rights

Check that the church has the necessary rights for every recording and all content embedded in it. YouTube’s Terms of Service require the necessary rights to exploit live content. Its copyright guidance for live streams explains that YouTube scans broadcasts for third-party content. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you hold a license, a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to prevent an interruption.

Keep the sermon files as your source of truth. If viewers should be able to find a particular sermon later, plan to publish it as its own on-demand video rather than relying on a long continuous livestream archive.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the current workflow and eligibility.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the stream settings. Enter them into the FFmpeg output destination and connection settings.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public configuration file, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Use the server URL and key from your own stream configuration; do not copy credentials from an example. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, for encoder streams. Its encoder settings guidance is the authority for current ingest recommendations.

Configure FFmpeg for YouTube

Choose settings that match your source and connection

YouTube recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Choose resolution and bitrate that both the source and sustained upload connection can support. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health while live.

FFmpeg’s command-line options are order-sensitive: input options apply to the next input, and output options apply to the next output URL. Put the media input before the YouTube destination. This illustrates the command shape only:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg [input options] -i sermon.mp4 [output options] -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the placeholders with the private RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, and configure the input and output options for your files. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains option placement. For available muxer behavior, including recovery options, consult its format documentation. This template does not specify a universal loop or timestamp strategy: those choices depend on how your media is encoded and how you want sermons to transition.

Test privately before the public broadcast

  1. Set the YouTube stream visibility to unlisted or private while testing.
  2. Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube receives the signal and displays a preview in Live Control Room.
  3. Check stream health, picture, audio, and transitions with representative sermon content. Monitor the live broadcast rather than assuming a successful initial connection will remain healthy.
  4. Confirm your local archive process is writing files and that the files are usable. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.

Keep the stream running and recover from interruptions

A command that connects successfully is not the same as a resilient 24/7 service. The machine running FFmpeg, its power, its network connection, the encoder process, and YouTube’s ingest all remain possible failure points. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer example for RTMP that continues processing at real-time rate through temporary network failures and attempts recovery every second indefinitely. This can help with temporary send failures; it does not guarantee that the YouTube ingest session, host, power, or internet connection stays available. See the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

For a church operating its own host, plan how someone will notice a failed process or unhealthy stream and restart or investigate it. A hosted server shifts the machine and network maintenance to a provider, but does not by itself guarantee a working stream; the available evidence here does not establish a particular hosting provider or that hosting is required.

Plan stream length, archives, and sermon access

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes a single continuous 24-hour broadcast an unreliable way to create a complete YouTube archive. Keep local recordings and publish individual sermons separately when durable on-demand access matters. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shorter scheduled events can make archive boundaries and sermon segments easier to manage, while one continuous event may simplify a channel’s live schedule. That is an operational tradeoff, not a guarantee of archive capture. Keep a local backup, and size storage to the sermon library and retention period; a suitable external drive is optional, not a requirement.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show an incoming stream Eligibility is incomplete, the server URL or key is wrong, or the encoder did not connect. Confirm channel verification and the absence of live restrictions in the past 90 days. Recheck the current URL and key in Live Control Room, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection errors.
The preview appears, but playback is unstable The selected resolution or bitrate may exceed what the source or sustained upload can support; the connection may also be unstable. Use a lower supported output setting, test with similar content, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder settings page has its current recommendations.
The stream stops after the process or network fails FFmpeg, the host, power, or connectivity stopped; a recovery mechanism cannot repair every failure. Inspect the encoder and host logs, restore the connection or process, and check YouTube’s stream status. Consider the documented FIFO recovery approach for temporary network failures, while retaining a plan for manual intervention.
Audio or video is missing or malformed The chosen input/output options do not match the sermon file, including its audio tracks, timestamps, or encoding. Test the actual file privately, verify the preview and sound, and adjust FFmpeg options for that media rather than assuming one command suits every recording.
A broadcast is interrupted for copyright YouTube may have detected third-party material, including music or other embedded content. Review rights for the specific material and YouTube’s copyright notice. If you are licensed, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent interruption.
A long broadcast has no complete YouTube archive The stream exceeded 12 hours; YouTube warns such streams may not be captured. Use your local archive and publish sermon-specific videos separately. Do not depend on one 24-hour event for the full recording.
