You can keep prerecorded church sermons streaming to YouTube from an Ubuntu host by looping the media with FFmpeg and running FFmpeg as a systemd service. The service can start at boot and restart after a process exit, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video; you still need to check YouTube Studio and the local logs.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream and retrieve its ingest URL and stream key. Keep the key secret; treat it like a password and do not put a real key in a public script, repository, or screenshot. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how an encoder connects with the URL and key.
- An always-on Ubuntu host. It can be a church-owned machine or a Linux server, but it needs dependable power, internet access, and access to the sermon files. A VPS may offer predictable connectivity, while a local machine may make media access simpler; compare upload capacity, storage, cost, resilience, and the support burden for your situation.
- FFmpeg installed and suitable media. The host needs enough processing capacity for your chosen encoding settings. The right size depends on the source files, output resolution, and network conditions; there is no universal CPU or bandwidth requirement.
- Permission for every component. Confirm that your church may rebroadcast the sermon recording, music, artwork, and any third-party material. The technical setup does not establish rights or jurisdiction-specific legal requirements.
Choose YouTube output settings
Check the host’s real upload speed and choose settings that leave headroom rather than consuming the entire connection. YouTube recommends a constant bitrate, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), pretesting, and monitoring stream health. It supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its current recommendations. For a sermon with a still image or simple slides, begin at a modest quality level and test the actual audio and picture rather than assuming one preset suits every connection.
FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: most apply to the next input or output. Put input-specific options before the relevant -i, and output-specific options before the output URL. Check the installed FFmpeg build and its documentation before deploying flags; available encoders and options can vary by build. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains option scoping and file inputs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Create an example FFmpeg loop command
The following is an example pattern, not a tested command. Replace the file path, ingest URL, encoding choices, and stream key placeholder with values appropriate to the host and media. Do not publish or share a command containing a real key.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/sermons/sunday-sermon.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
In this example, -stream_loop -1 repeats the finite input indefinitely, and -re reads it at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The video bitrate, 30 fps output, 60-frame GOP, and audio settings are illustrative starting values only; they are not guaranteed to fit your source or upload connection. Verify your ingest URL format and accepted settings in YouTube Studio, and test the result before relying on it. A missing audio stream is allowed by the optional audio map; if the sermon must have sound, confirm that the source actually contains the intended audio.
Run FFmpeg under systemd at boot
1. Create a dedicated account and media location
Run the service as an unprivileged account rather than root. For example, an administrator might create a system account named ytstream and give it read access to /srv/sermons. Set the file ownership and permissions to match your installation; do not make sermon files or service credentials world-readable merely to avoid configuring access correctly.

2. Store the command in a service unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/sermon-stream.service with an editor such as sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/sermon-stream.service. Adjust the account, working directory, paths, and FFmpeg settings. This illustrative unit uses a separate environment file for the key so the secret is not embedded in the unit itself:

Create /etc/sermon-stream.env as root and restrict its permissions, for example with sudo chmod 600 /etc/sermon-stream.env. Put the ingest URL and key in the environment file using valid shell-style assignments. Ensure the service can read it under your system’s service rules. Environment variables can still be exposed to privileged administrators or process-inspection tools, so follow your church’s security practices and avoid placing the file in a public or backed-up location without suitable protection.

The restart settings shown are common configurable choices: Restart=always tells systemd to restart after the process exits, and RestartSec=10 inserts a delay. Tune policy and delay to your operational needs. Restarting a failed process does not repair an incorrect key, a blocked connection, YouTube-side problems, or other persistent faults. systemd distinguishes enabling a unit for startup from starting it now; see systemd’s unit documentation for boot target behavior.
3. Enable, start, and inspect the service
- Ask systemd to reload unit files:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service for boot and start it in the current session:
sudo systemctl enable --now sermon-stream.service. - Check the current state:
systemctl status sermon-stream.service. - Follow its logs:
sudo journalctl -u sermon-stream.service -f. - After changing the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then restart it withsudo systemctl restart sermon-stream.service.
Verify the broadcast end to end
Before relying on a continuous stream, test with representative sermon audio and video. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and recommends monitoring stream health. In YouTube Studio, check the preview and stream-health indicators while the service is running. Listen for usable audio and inspect the picture; a locally active FFmpeg process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a usable broadcast. Also inspect the systemd journal for connection errors, repeated exits, and authentication problems.

Plan for sermon recordings and archives
A nonstop broadcast and complete individual sermon archives are different requirements. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a single continuous 24/7 event exceeds that stated threshold. If you need a separate archive for each sermon, schedule intentionally divided broadcasts or maintain a separate local recording and retention process. YouTube’s Live API documentation also describes archive and DVR settings, whose behavior depends on those settings: live broadcast resource and live stream resource.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| systemd reports a failed or repeatedly restarting service | Bad path, permissions, invalid FFmpeg option, or inaccessible media | Read journalctl -u sermon-stream.service; verify the executable path, media file, service account permissions, and installed FFmpeg options. |
| FFmpeg stays active but YouTube shows no usable stream | Wrong ingest URL or key, connection failure, or incompatible output | Check the YouTube Studio stream details, review FFmpeg logs, and inspect YouTube’s preview and health indicators. Replace a compromised key in the service environment and restart. |
| Picture stutters or the host struggles | Encoding load exceeds CPU capacity, or upload capacity is unstable | Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest; check actual upload speed and reserve bandwidth headroom. |
| Audio is missing | Input has no audio stream, mapping is wrong, or the selected output encoding is unsuitable | Inspect the source streams with FFmpeg tools, verify the audio map and encoder, and listen to the YouTube preview during a test. |
| Stream drops and systemd restarts FFmpeg, but the fault returns | The restart handles process exit, not a persistent network, credential, media, or platform problem | Use the journal and YouTube health indicators to identify the underlying cause; correct it rather than relying on repeated restarts. |
| There is no full archive of the 24/7 event | The event exceeded YouTube Help’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold | Divide broadcasts deliberately or record and retain the sermons separately. |
