You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a Mumbai VPS by looping prepared video with FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube over RTMPS. The lowest-cost setup is not necessarily the VPS with the smallest advertised monthly fee: calculate the outbound transfer your chosen bitrate will consume, check the provider’s actual transfer and overage terms, and budget time for monitoring and recovery. No current first-party Mumbai VPS plan and price are established here, so there is no defensible single “cheapest” plan or guaranteed total monthly cost.
What you need before you start
This method suits a prepared video or audio-visual program that repeats. It does not turn a VPS into a live camera feed. You need a Linux VPS with stable outbound capacity, media you have the right to stream, an encoder such as FFmpeg, and access to your YouTube channel’s Live Control Room.
- YouTube eligibility: The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current help page also says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s live-stream prerequisites for current requirements.
- Content rights and rules: You must have the rights needed for everything in the stream and comply with applicable terms and Community Guidelines. Review YouTube’s livestream terms before leaving a stream unattended.
- Media: Prepare a video file or playlist suitable for continuous playback. Test that the file decodes and loops cleanly before scheduling an extended stream.
- VPS: Confirm the Mumbai location, monthly and renewal price, included outbound transfer, egress charges, fair-use limits, port-speed terms, CPU allocation, and whether sustained software encoding is supported. A stated port speed alone does not tell you how much monthly transfer is included or whether the CPU can encode your chosen format.
Choose settings that fit the stream and the budget
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as the starting point, then validate the result in your own stream preview. YouTube currently accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; for H.264 it recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Prefer RTMPS when supported: it is RTMP over SSL. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

The transfer estimates are arithmetic from a continuous stream at the listed bitrate: bitrate in megabits per second divided by eight, multiplied by seconds in a 30-day month. They exclude protocol overhead and retries; actual usage can therefore differ. Lowering bitrate can reduce transfer consumption, but test picture quality rather than assuming a lower setting will look acceptable.

Google recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup bitrates. For a single 4.5 Mbps output, that means at least 5.4 Mbps of stable outbound capacity under that recommendation. Capacity is not the same as a monthly data allowance. Google’s guidance is at streaming tips and upload headroom.
Set up a looping FFmpeg stream
For a simple repeating program, a headless FFmpeg process avoids the desktop environment and scene-building overhead of a graphical workflow such as OBS. A third-party VPS guide describes a looped-file FFmpeg-to-YouTube approach, but its example is not a tested command or a reliability guarantee. Use the FFmpeg/OBS VPS guide as an example, and verify command syntax and behavior against the FFmpeg build and media on your own VPS.

- Provision and inspect the VPS. Choose a Mumbai location only after checking the provider’s own current plan, transfer limits and recurring charges. Confirm available CPU and stable outbound capacity for the encoder settings you intend to use.
- Install FFmpeg and upload the media. Use your Linux distribution’s supported package source or the FFmpeg build you have selected. Check that the file is readable and that FFmpeg can decode its streams before attempting a live broadcast.
- Create a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, configure the broadcast and encoder connection, and copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s setup guide is YouTube encoder setup. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots or logs you share.
- Configure the encoder to match YouTube’s guidance. Select an ingest protocol supported by YouTube, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval for H.264, and choose a bitrate appropriate for your resolution and transfer budget. Supply the stream URL and key to FFmpeg without exposing them to other users of the VPS.
- Start a private or unlisted test first. Watch the Live Control Room preview for a stable connection, audio/video synchronization, acceptable image quality and clean loop points. Confirm that the VPS sustains the encoder load and network output before relying on it for a long-running channel.
- Keep the process running and observable. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor and configure alerts for encoder exit, network loss and stream health. These are operational safeguards, not a specific watchdog configuration validated here. Test a process restart and reconnection before making the stream public.
- Plan archive behavior separately. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all. If a replay matters, keep individual sessions under 12 hours and test the channel’s restart behavior; retain a separate recording when you need a dependable copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Estimate the actual monthly cost
Calculate transfer from the bitrate you will actually send, then compare that figure with each provider’s included monthly allowance and overage schedule. For example, a continuous 4.5 Mbps output uses about 1.46 decimal TB in a 30-day month by the same bitrate arithmetic. The estimate does not include overhead or retries, so leave room rather than budgeting exactly to a provider’s limit.

Keep a 24/7 stream reliable
A VPS removes dependence on a home computer and home internet connection, but it does not eliminate operational work. You remain responsible for the encoder, process monitoring, stream key security, media and the VPS provider’s network and billing limits. A Mumbai host may be appropriate for your needs, but its location alone does not establish route quality or sustained stability; test the actual connection from the selected host.

- Monitor encoder exit status, VPS network connectivity and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Alert on failure and test recovery by deliberately restarting the encoder during a controlled test.
- Keep credentials out of public files and rotate the YouTube stream key if it is exposed.
- Store a separate recording if the stream’s content must be preserved, especially when sessions approach the archive limit.
- Recheck VPS transfer usage and billing terms during the first billing period so overhead and retries do not create a surprise charge.

Yes, if the VPS supports a graphical desktop and can sustain the chosen encoder settings, but OBS generally adds desktop and operating-system overhead compared with a simple headless FFmpeg process.
