You can turn off or disconnect the monitor without ending a YouTube livestream. The home server must stay powered on, keep its encoder process running, and maintain a working network connection. For a prerecorded video loop, FFmpeg can do the job from the command line; for scenes, cameras, and a graphical production workflow, OBS is usually the better fit. OBS on Linux still requires an X Window System or Wayland display environment, even when no physical monitor is attached.
What has to stay on for a monitorless stream?
The monitor is only a display. It is not what sends the video to YouTube. The server, encoder, source media or capture devices, network connection, and YouTube ingest must remain available. You can switch off the monitor after setup, but first make sure you can administer the machine remotely and that the stream continues after a test disconnect.
A monitorless setup is not necessarily a display-stack-free setup. OBS’s published Linux/Unix requirements include an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. Check the installed OBS version, display stack, graphics drivers, capture sources, and startup method on the actual host; headless behavior should not be assumed to work identically on every Linux system. OBS System Requirements
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose OBS or FFmpeg for the source you have
| Use case | Better starting point | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Scenes, cameras, multiple capture sources, or a GUI-configured production | OBS | On Linux, provide the required X or Wayland environment; encoding load depends on output settings and scene complexity. |
| A prerecorded file or command-line media pipeline | FFmpeg | -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely, but does not by itself configure YouTube delivery or restart a failed process. |
OBS is suited to interactive production and capture. FFmpeg is useful when the source and processing can be expressed as a command-line pipeline. Neither tool, by itself, guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 service; you still need to monitor the process and plan for recovery.

Prepare YouTube Live and the home server
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Complete this before a scheduled launch. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of public files, shared screenshots, and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Install and configure the encoder on the host. For OBS, verify that Linux’s display environment and graphics drivers work for the selected sources. For FFmpeg, confirm the media input, audio track, codecs, and output settings. Arrange remote administration before disconnecting the monitor.
- Set output to match both the source and upload connection. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on what the source can provide and the connection can sustain. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the resolution and frame rate you select rather than applying one bitrate to every stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test the complete stream before going unattended. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, checking stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. Confirm that the stream is visible and audible from another device and that remote access works after the monitor is off.
Loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 means to loop the input indefinitely. It is a media-loop setting, not a complete YouTube Live command: the output still needs compatible audio/video handling, the YouTube server URL and stream key, and settings that fit the source and current YouTube guidance. Refer to the FFmpeg documentation for option syntax and placement; input options belong before the input they affect.
Before leaving the machine unattended, verify that the chosen workflow sends valid audio and video to YouTube, inspect stream health in Live Control Room, and test what happens if the encoder process or network connection is interrupted. The loop option does not supervise or restart FFmpeg after a crash.

Size the host and plan for recovery
There is no universal mini PC specification that guarantees a 24/7 stream. OBS notes that requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee the selected workload will stream or record successfully. A supported hardware encoder can shift encoding work from the CPU to a GPU component. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and Intel Quick Sync support on Linux, and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, with generation and driver caveats. Confirm compatibility for the actual GPU, drivers, operating system, and workflow in OBS Hardware Encoding.
A dedicated Linux-capable mini PC is one possible host, not a guaranteed solution for every output or scene. Test the exact machine under the workload you intend to run. Remote management and a tested process-start/recovery plan matter as much as raw hardware: a looping input cannot keep the stream alive if the encoder exits, the host reboots, or the network fails. A UPS is an optional way to bridge short power interruptions; choose its capacity for the server and networking equipment’s load and the runtime you need.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No stream reaches YouTube | Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the stream URL/key is wrong | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation; verify the current stream’s server URL and key in Live Control Room and the encoder. |
| Stream stops when the monitor is disconnected | The host’s display or capture setup depended on the physical display, or the encoder was not running independently | For OBS on Linux, confirm X or Wayland, graphics drivers, capture sources, and startup configuration. Test with remote administration before relying on it. |
| Video is unstable or YouTube reports stream-health issues | Output settings exceed source or network capacity, or encoder settings do not match YouTube guidance | Check stream health, choose bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected resolution/frame rate, use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four), and RTMPS. |
| FFmpeg repeats the file but the broadcast still ends | The encoder process, host, network, or YouTube ingest failed; input looping does not supervise the process | Inspect process and network status, remote into the host, and verify the actual stream in Live Control Room. Test the restart/recovery procedure rather than assuming the loop option handles it. |
| No complete archive appears for a long broadcast | The stream may have run 12 hours or longer | YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer uninterrupted streams, do not assume a complete archive; verify current platform behavior and plan recording or segmentation if an archive is essential. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a local OBS/FFmpeg production, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video and YouTube streaming, not camera-originated live production. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
