To run a 24/7 YouTube stream of a true-crime podcast archive, connect an encoder to a YouTube Live Control Room event and feed it your episodes in a continuous playlist. For reliable YouTube replays, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours: YouTube may not capture streams that run longer. Before launch, verify your channel, check rights for every episode and asset, and review the audio and visuals against YouTube’s policies.
Choose how to keep the stream running
YouTube accepts streams sent from software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Your choice depends on how you will manage playback, restarts, and session handoffs—not on a YouTube reliability ranking. YouTube’s documentation confirms both encoder types but does not establish that one is more reliable than the other.
- Software encoder: A fit when you can configure and monitor the computer and streaming software that will send the feed. Plan for what happens if the software, computer, or connection stops.
- Standalone hardware encoder: An option for a dedicated production setup. You still need to configure the stream and plan for interruptions and session rollover.
For a podcast archive, prepare the episodes and any accompanying visuals as a continuous program in the encoder or automation system you choose. YouTube’s setup instructions do not require a particular slate or episode layout. Test your playlist and handoff process before relying on it for unattended operation.
Prepare the channel and archive
Enable live streaming
Verify the YouTube channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction from the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming before your planned start; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current eligibility and setup guidance in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Audit rights episode by episode
Confirm you have permission for YouTube livestreaming and archived playback of the complete program—not just the podcast narration. Check music beds, clips, archival audio, artwork, and other third-party material. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party matches; an unresolved match can interrupt or terminate a live stream. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Archived broadcasts may also receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for obtaining the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. The terms do not determine whether a particular podcast agreement covers every territory or use. If you have a license but expect a Content ID match, ask the rights holder about allowlisting before you go live. Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and resolve rights questions with the relevant rights holders or a qualified adviser.

Review true-crime content and presentation
YouTube’s violent or graphic content policy applies to livestreams. Review both what viewers hear or see and how the material is presented. Documentary or educational context needs to appear in the content itself; a title or description alone is not enough for some policy exceptions. Graphic material may be age-restricted or removed depending on its context and presentation. Avoid shock-oriented thumbnails, edits, and descriptions. Consult YouTube’s violent or graphic content policy.
Create and connect the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a live event or schedule one. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup flow if the Studio labels have changed; the core connection details are the event’s stream URL and stream key.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Load and inspect your program. Confirm the episode order, transitions, and accompanying visuals in the encoder or automation system. Check that the playlist can continue and that you know how it will behave when a session ends or the feed drops.
- Start sending the feed, then check the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended audio and visuals before starting the live event. Verify that Studio shows the stream as live once you begin.
- Monitor the launch and record a local backup. Watch Live Control Room and the recording process during the initial run. Verify the local recording after each session rather than assuming it was saved correctly. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a particular automation product or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Use shorter sessions if you need YouTube replays
A single 24/7 live event is a poor choice when a complete YouTube replay matters. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Schedule separate sessions under 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup; see YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

- Custom three-capsule array: This professional USB mic produces clear, powerful, broadcast-quality sound for YouTube videos, Twitch game streaming, podcasting, Zoom meetings, music recording and more
- Blue VO!CE software: Elevate your streamings and recordings with clear broadcast vocal sound and entertain your audience with enhanced effects, advanced modulation and HD audio samples
- Four pickup patterns: Flexible cardioid, omni, bidirectional, and stereo pickup patterns allow you to record in ways that would normally require multiple mics, for vocals, instruments and podcasts
- Onboard audio controls: Headphone volume, pattern selection, instant mute, and mic gain put you in charge of every level of the audio recording and streaming process
- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Shorter sessions involve a trade-off: they make YouTube’s automatic archive more viable, but a schedule still needs a handoff between events. The exact rollover method depends on your encoder or automation system. Test the transition and do not promise listeners gapless playback until you have verified that setup. Maintain a runbook for session rollover, restarts, stream-key handling, and incident response.

With a self-managed encoder, you control the playback setup and can maintain local recordings, but you are responsible for the equipment, connection, monitoring, and restart plan. Troubleshoot common launch problems
- Live streaming is not available: Verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction from the preceding 90 days. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- YouTube Studio receives no feed: Check that the encoder has the correct event’s stream URL and key, and that it has actually started sending. Keep the key private; reset it if you suspect it has been exposed.
- The stream is interrupted or terminated after an asset match: Review the Content ID notice and identify the matched episode or asset. Resolve the rights issue with the rights holder; if the use is licensed, ask whether they can allowlist your channel.
- A replay is missing or incomplete: Check the session length. YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours. Keep sessions under that duration when an automatic archive matters, and verify the local recording.
- Listeners encounter a gap at session rollover: The transition depends on your encoder or automation system. Test the handoff, document the restart procedure, and do not treat uninterrupted playback as guaranteed.
