You can run a YouTube radio stream from an India-based VPS by putting your audio or playlist on the server, sending it through an encoder such as FFmpeg to YouTube Live, and configuring the process to restart if it fails. The VPS keeps your personal computer out of the streaming chain, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: you still need suitable media rights, enough sustained outbound capacity, monitoring and a recovery plan.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The path is: media file or playlist → encoder process on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. For audio-led radio, the encoder can send audio with a still image or other video if that is the format you choose; the source and output must be configured for YouTube’s accepted formats. An always-on VPS provides a place for the process to run. It does not supply the program, configure YouTube, or recover the stream unless you arrange those functions.
A looping FFmpeg process is one possible implementation pattern, illustrated in this VPS tutorial. Treat it as an example rather than an officially supported, tested recipe or an uptime guarantee. The exact commands and service-supervisor configuration depend on your operating system, FFmpeg build, media and VPS plan.

Check YouTube eligibility before renting a VPS
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time encoder streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your intended launch. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements and encoder setup instructions.

Do not build your schedule around an untested stream key or assume that a newly enabled channel can go live immediately. Create the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that encoder streaming is available before you proceed.
Choose a VPS for the workload, not just its India location
An India-region server may suit your operating needs, but its location alone does not establish the route quality to YouTube ingest or guarantee reliability. Check the provider’s current terms and plan details for sustained outbound transfer, CPU allocation, monitoring, backups and support. No particular provider, India data center, price or minimum VPS size is established here.
Estimate the streaming workload before choosing a plan. If your media is already encoded and you only pass it through without changing its encoding, that is a different CPU workload from resizing or re-encoding it in software. Re-encoding gives you more control over output codec and resolution, but the VPS must be able to perform that work continuously. These are planning distinctions, not measured benchmarks for a particular provider or plan.

Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Enable live streaming: verify the channel and complete YouTube’s live-stream activation process. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time encoder streaming to become available.
- Create a stream in Live Control Room: obtain the stream URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube explains that the key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; see stream key settings.
- Keep the key secret: treat it like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public command histories or logs. Use a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your operating system rather than putting the key somewhere other users can read.
- Prepare the media: place the source file or playlist where the encoder process can read it. Confirm that the files are complete, playable and arranged in the intended order before starting an unattended loop.
- Configure the encoder: send the output to the endpoint YouTube provides, preferably using RTMPS where available. Select codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval from YouTube’s current guidance rather than copying an arbitrary preset.
- Make the process recoverable: configure an operating-system service supervisor or equivalent restart strategy, and inspect logs after failures. The exact service configuration is system-specific; test that it restarts the encoder after a process failure and after a server restart.
- Test before publishing: use a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Check YouTube’s preview for audio and video, review stream-health warnings and verify the process survives a restart before relying on it for a public broadcast.
Encoder settings: use YouTube’s published guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport where supported. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide when configuring your encoder.
The following are YouTube’s published recommended H.264 video bitrates and stereo audio bitrate, not measured minimum VPS capacity. Values are from the official encoder guidance accessed on 2026-10-03; YouTube’s page did not state a publication date in the search results.

Those recommendations describe the encoder output; they do not tell you how much transfer capacity a provider will deliver continuously. Choose an output appropriate to your source and verify that the VPS can sustain it. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult the complete current table if you use a different configuration.

Plan for recovery, archives and DVR limits
Test more than the first connection. Confirm that the encoder reconnects after a dropped connection, that the supervisor relaunches a failed process and that you can identify the cause from logs. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; see its live-stream tips. A restart mechanism can recover a process, but it cannot repair missing source files, invalid credentials, rights claims or a provider outage.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, according to YouTube’s DVR guidance.

If replay matters, arrange a separate recording backup and verify the recording process independently. A local drive is only for that backup; it is not required to transmit the live stream from the VPS.

Clear music rights before you broadcast
Being able to play a track is not permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold the necessary rights for use of the live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights and relevant territory rights. The license required depends on the catalog, how you use it and the territories involved; there is no single license conclusion for an unspecified playlist. Read YouTube’s live-stream terms and check the rights for your actual music and intended use, including any replay or archive.
The platform guidance cited here is global. It does not establish a special India-specific encoder rule, the best Indian VPS location or the licensing obligations for a particular Indian music catalog. Check the provider’s terms and applicable rights for the locations and audience involved.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not offer encoder streaming: verify the channel and live-stream eligibility, check for a restriction in the preceding 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- YouTube is not receiving the feed: check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, that the key is current and secret, and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Review YouTube’s preview and stream-health status.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s settings guidance and the VPS plan’s documented sustained outbound transfer. Inspect provider and encoder logs; configure and test reconnect and process-restart behavior rather than assuming the VPS will recover automatically.
- The VPS cannot keep up with encoding: distinguish simple pass-through of already encoded media from software re-encoding, which requires the server to perform the encoding workload continuously. Reduce the workload or choose a plan based on verified CPU capacity, then test the actual media and settings.
- The archive is missing or DVR rewind is limited: check stream duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be archived and that DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Keep a separate recording if the replay matters.
- Audio is absent, distorted or out of sync: inspect the source media and encoder’s audio stream, then verify the audio in YouTube’s preview during a test. Do not rely solely on the encoder reporting that it is connected.
- The broadcast receives a copyright claim or interruption: review the rights for every track and the relevant territories. A successful technical connection does not establish permission to use the music.
