You can run a looping YouTube radio-style stream from a Debian machine with FFmpeg by feeding it authorized media, encoding to settings YouTube accepts, and sending the output to the event’s RTMPS address with its stream key. The loop command handles repeated playback; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Your host, power, network, credentials, FFmpeg process, and YouTube ingest all need to keep working.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take at least 24 hours.
- A Debian machine that can read your media and sustain the selected encoding workload and upload bitrate. There is no universal minimum CPU or memory specification established here; test your actual files and output settings.
- FFmpeg installed from the package repository for your Debian release.
- Music, recordings, and artwork that you have permission to use. Secure the rights needed for your specific use; no particular license automatically establishes permission for every YouTube use.
Prepare the YouTube event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that live streaming is available for your channel. If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow at least 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule an encoder event in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and the stream key associated with that event.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in shared shell history, public configuration files, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which is RTMP transmitted over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS destination shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a fixed address.
Install FFmpeg and inspect your media
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your selected Debian release, then inspect the source file before building the output command. For example, ffprobe /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 can show whether the file contains video and audio streams and their formats. Check that the chosen output mapping and encoding match the actual input.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the media is already compatible with the output settings, processing demands may differ from a full transcode. CPU load depends on the source and the selected output; do not assume a machine is adequate without testing the intended configuration.

Loop a file and pace playback
For a single local file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The -re option reads file input at its native rate instead of pushing it as fast as possible. Both are input options, so put them before the corresponding -i:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 ...
This is only the input portion of a command, not a complete production configuration. You must still choose stream mapping, codecs or copy settings, any necessary filters, output bitrate, and the event’s RTMPS destination. Check the join between the end and beginning of the file: an endlessly repeated file is not a scheduled playlist with guaranteed smooth transitions.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. A straightforward SDR setup often uses H.264 video and AAC audio, but the bitrate must match the resolution and frame rate you select.

| Example output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | YouTube encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026; a recommendation, not a measured result or guarantee. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026; a recommendation, not a measured result or guarantee. |
These examples are not interchangeable: choose a bitrate from YouTube’s guidance for your precise codec, resolution, and frame rate. Audio also contributes to the total outgoing bitrate. If you send more than one feed, count their combined bitrate when planning capacity.
Build the output and send it to YouTube
Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and the stream key belonging to the event. A schematic command has this shape; replace the placeholders with the settings appropriate to your file and event:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-media.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -b:v 5M -minrate 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_EVENT_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This example illustrates an H.264 1080p30-style CBR target and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps; it does not resize arbitrary source video to 1080p, and its values are not universal. Set the video bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, filters, and mapping to match your source and intended output. Keep the real key out of shell history and any shared or logged command line; use a suitably protected configuration method for your environment.

Test bandwidth, preview, and stream health
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and a reliable connection. For example, a 5 Mbps video target plus audio requires planning from the combined bitrate, then adding the recommended headroom. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test the actual connection before launch rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum.

- Confirm that FFmpeg reads the file at the expected pace and loops at the intended boundary.
- Check audio and video in the Live Control Room preview before relying on the event.
- Monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room, and verify that viewers can reach the event.
- Check outbound bandwidth and system load during a sustained test with the actual encode settings.
Plan for failures and archives
A process manager and restart policy can restart a failed local FFmpeg process, but that alone does not repair an expired or exposed key, failed host, power loss, network outage, or YouTube ingest problem. Plan separately for logs, alerts, process recovery, host and network resilience, and checking the stream after a reconnect. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a Debian setup’s uptime percentage or guarantee gap-free recovery.
YouTube’s encoder workflow documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that an uninterrupted broadcast lasting 24 hours or more will become one complete archive. Plan recording and archive needs separately rather than assuming a continuous stream produces a single complete VOD.

Debian host or remote VPS?
| Option | What it offers | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Your Debian computer | Direct control of the machine and its media files. | It depends on that host, its power, network, and local process remaining available. |
| A VPS | Remote hosting for readers who prefer not to run the encoder on a home machine. | Capacity, reliability, and cost depend on the provider and selected instance; no specific provider or machine is endorsed here. |
Neither option removes the need to test encoding capacity, sustained upload, credentials, and recovery behavior. A mini PC, UPS, router upgrade, capture card, or dedicated GPU is not a universal requirement; add hardware only if testing identifies a bottleneck or risk that it addresses.
Troubleshooting common problems
- You cannot start a live event: Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions. First-time activation may take at least 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the event’s RTMPS URL and matching key are correct, and that the key has not been reset. If it may have been exposed, reset it and update the protected configuration.
- The output stutters or drops frames: Compare sustained upload capacity with the total outgoing bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Also check whether the host can sustain the chosen transcode.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong: Inspect the input streams and mappings, verify codec and output settings, and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
- The stream stops after a process failure: A process restart policy can bring FFmpeg back, but check the host, network, event credentials, and YouTube ingest before assuming restart restored the broadcast.
- The loop has an audible or visible jump: Inspect the media’s end and beginning; a single-file loop does not guarantee a seamless transition.
