You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio-style stream from a refurbished PC by using an encoder, a verified YouTube channel, a stable upload connection and content you have rights to stream. YouTube does not publish a minimum PC specification for encoder streaming, so test the actual computer at your intended settings before relying on it. For a stream that should continue without a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative for looping uploaded videos on YouTube.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live streaming help explains eligibility and getting started.
- A refurbished desktop PC that can sustain your chosen encoder settings, plus storage for any local recordings.
- An encoder application that can send a stream to YouTube using its server URL and stream key.
- A dependable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the total stream bitrate.
- Music and visuals cleared for the intended live stream and any replay or archive.
YouTube does not certify particular refurbished-PC models or publish a minimum CPU or RAM requirement in the reviewed encoder guidance. A machine’s suitability depends on its encoding path, workload and condition, so validate it with a sustained test rather than relying on a model name alone.
Choose and check a refurbished PC
Match the PC to the visual output you actually plan to stream. A static radio visual with album art or a simple animation may have a different workload from a more elaborate video presentation. The encoder still has to produce the selected resolution and frame rate continuously, and the machine must stay cool and operational.

- Encoding capability: Check which hardware or software encoding options the PC and encoder support, then test the selected option at your planned output settings.
- CPU and memory: Ensure the intended encoder workload runs without overload during a long test. There is no official YouTube minimum to use as a pass/fail figure.
- Cooling and physical condition: Inspect fans, vents and the system’s behavior under sustained load; overheating can compromise a long-running stream.
- Storage health: Check the drive, especially if you plan to record locally. A full or failing drive can prevent a local archive from being saved.
- Ethernet and placement: Prefer a reliable wired connection when practical. An Ethernet cable can help connect the PC to the router, but cannot compensate for insufficient ISP upload capacity.
- Seller terms: Check the refurbished computer’s condition, warranty and return terms before depending on it for continuous operation.
Set YouTube and the encoder up
- Confirm live eligibility. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and set up the live event. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead of a scheduled event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event so you can check the preview.
- Choose output settings. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate appropriate for the visual format and the PC’s tested capability. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 options for RTMP/RTMPS encoder streams; its current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Use a recommended bitrate as a starting point. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec. They are platform guidance, not a guarantee that your refurbished PC or network will sustain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the applicable settings.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the corresponding encoder fields, then start the encoder and check the YouTube preview and stream-health status before making the event public.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not include it in public screenshots or exposed configuration files. If it is disclosed, regenerate it in YouTube and update the encoder.
Monitor both sound and picture during setup. An encoder can show an active connection while the stream still has audio gaps, dropped frames or other quality problems.

Make upload capacity and power more dependable
YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total streaming bitrate. Add the audio and video bitrate when estimating that total, then leave the recommended headroom. Check upload speed on the actual connection, including at busy times; an advertised download speed does not establish available upload capacity. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its streaming tips cover network preparation and stream health.
- Use a wired connection when practical and check that the router, cable and PC connection remain stable.
- Run a sustained stream test at the intended bitrate and watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, heat, audio gaps and YouTube stream-health warnings.
- If short power cuts are a concern, consider a UPS for the PC and router. Choose it based on the combined load and desired runtime; actual runtime depends on the equipment and battery condition, and no single UPS capacity guarantees a particular duration.
- Decide who will notice and respond to an outage. A 24/7 stream needs a plan for a stopped encoder, internet failure, audio failure, full disk or power interruption.
Plan recordings and restarts
Do not rely on YouTube to save one uninterrupted event that runs for days. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, record locally, leave enough space on a healthy drive and check that the recording file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube’s archive live streams guidance explains this limit.

Estimate local storage from the recording bitrate and duration, and plan how to retain, move or segment recordings. Confirm that saved files play correctly. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish guaranteed maximum uptime or an automatic unattended restart design for a 24/7 channel. Treat restart automation and monitoring as parts of your own operating plan, and test recovery before depending on it.
Clear music and visual rights before broadcasting
Only stream music and visuals when you have the necessary rights for the planned live broadcast and any archive or replay. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace the video with a placeholder and warn you, and it can interrupt or terminate the stream if the identified material remains. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube’s live streaming terms require the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including relevant music rights, and to follow applicable laws and regulations. For an India-based radio channel, the licensing route depends on the repertoire, rights holders, territory and whether the program uses live performances, recordings or archived playback. The sources cited here do not determine which license is sufficient for a particular format. Obtain permissions that cover the uses you intend and consult a qualified Indian rights professional where needed; do not assume one license covers every track or use.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or a connection problem | Check the Live Control Room details and encoder fields. Keep the key private; regenerate it if exposed. Test the PC’s connection to the internet. |
| Dropped frames or stream-health warnings | Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable, or the encoder cannot sustain the workload | Check actual upload performance, leave 20% headroom above total streaming bitrate, and test lower output settings if needed. Watch for encoder overload and heat. |
| Stream stops after a network or power interruption | The connection or power failed and the encoder did not resume | Check power to the PC and router, then restore the encoder and verify the preview. If using a UPS, review load and battery condition. Make sure an operator or tested recovery plan can detect and address the stop. |
| Live stream is interrupted after a content warning | YouTube detected third-party material, or the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel | Review the warning, remove or replace disputed material, and confirm that permissions and any needed Content ID allowlisting cover the channel and planned use. |
| No complete YouTube replay appears | The event exceeded 12 hours or the archive was otherwise not captured | Do not treat YouTube’s archive as a backup for a long-running stream. Check local recording settings, available storage and file growth during transmission. |
| Local recording stops or is missing | Disk space ran out, the destination drive failed, or recording was not enabled | Check free space and drive health, confirm recording is enabled, and verify that the file grows and plays during a test. |
