You can run a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream from an always-on Linux Amazon EC2 instance in India by looping or sequencing media with FFmpeg and sending the encoded output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. You will need to prepare the channel and media, configure a YouTube stream key, test the playlist and encoding on your chosen instance, and supervise the process. EC2 capacity, monthly cost, and uninterrupted uptime depend on your actual workload and region; there is no universally correct instance size or guaranteed bill.
How the EC2-to-YouTube setup works
EC2 runs the encoder and playlist process; YouTube supplies the live ingest endpoint. The basic path is:
Media files → FFmpeg on EC2 → YouTube Live over RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. The encoder needs YouTube’s current ingest server URL and the stream key for the broadcast. Use the endpoint and application path provided for your stream rather than assuming a hostname or constructing a URL yourself. RTMPS uses port 443. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide and YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

This design sends one live feed to YouTube; it does not itself create a robust playlist scheduler, guarantee failover, or provide a viewer-delivery system. A process that runs continuously still needs monitoring and recovery procedures.
Prepare the channel and playlist first
Enable YouTube Live
Complete YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and activation steps before scheduling the EC2 deployment. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not assume a newly enabled channel can go live immediately. For the current steps, use YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Check media rights and archive needs
- Confirm you have the necessary rights to stream every video and audio item, including music, performances, and any third-party footage. Having a copy of a file does not establish permission to broadcast it.
- Test the full set of media for format compatibility, transitions, audio continuity, and timestamps. A playlist that works once is not automatically safe to leave unattended.
- If a replay is important, plan around YouTube’s stated archive behavior: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube’s guidance does not promise an archive for broadcasts longer than 12 hours. Check current behavior and consider ending and restarting on a shorter cycle if a reliable replay matters. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the stream settings. The exact console labels can change, so use the values shown for the stream you created.
- Treat the stream key like a password: store it in a protected environment file or secret store, restrict file permissions, and do not commit it to source control, paste it into a public script, or expose it in logs.
- If you suspect that the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password and address; see Manage live stream settings.
Choose an EC2 instance and calculate costs for your region
Launch a Linux EC2 instance in the India region that suits your needs, but select its size only after deciding whether FFmpeg must transcode the media. The required CPU and memory depend on the source format, resolution, frame rate, filters, and audio processing. If compatible media can be passed through without a full software transcode, the compute requirement can differ substantially from transcoding every frame. Benchmark the actual playlist on the candidate instance before relying on it.
No named EC2 size or India monthly price is established here. The bill depends on the selected region and instance family, how long the instance runs, storage, data transfer, and any additional services. Check current EC2 pricing and regional availability for your intended configuration before deployment; do not use a different AWS architecture’s estimate as the cost of a single EC2 encoder.

AWS documents a managed 24×7 live-video architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront. That is aimed at broader packaging and viewer distribution needs, not simply running one encoder that sends a feed to YouTube. Its example costs should not be treated as the price of this EC2 setup. See AWS’s live-streaming solution overview and AWS deployment planning.
Install FFmpeg and test how the files will loop
Install FFmpeg using the package source supported by your Linux distribution, then check the installed version and available codecs. Do not assume a particular EC2 image includes the required encoder components. Validate the exact media and command before leaving the process unattended.
Loop one file
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 to loop one input indefinitely. A basic input pattern is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 ...

The ellipsis is deliberate: output mapping, codecs, bitrate, audio, and the YouTube destination must match the source and your chosen broadcast settings. Do not copy an incomplete command as a production encoder configuration.
Sequence multiple files
For a sequence, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing the media in order. For example, a playlist file can contain lines such as:
file '/path/to/first.mp4'
file '/path/to/second.mp4'
Use the concat demuxer only when the files are compatible with one another. Differences in stream layout, time bases, or file duration can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts at transitions. FFmpeg’s documentation explains the demuxer and its constraints: FFmpeg concat demuxer. Test every transition and the whole playlist, not just the first file. This outline is not a claim that a particular command or media set has been tested.

Set YouTube-compatible output and RTMPS
Configure FFmpeg’s output to match the stream key and server URL from YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS and confirm the client supports it and that the instance can make outbound connections to the required ingest endpoint on port 443. YouTube publishes the following H.264 recommendations; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can encode in real time.
| Output profile | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
- Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the frequency should not exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio as supported by your chosen encoder configuration and source.
- Choose resolution and frame rate based on the content and the instance’s tested capacity. A higher profile is not automatically better for a playlist, and a more demanding encode can increase CPU use.
Recommendations and encoder settings can change; check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before publishing a configuration.
Run the encoder as a supervised service
Starting FFmpeg in an interactive shell is not an operations plan for a 24/7 channel. Configure an operating-system service or process supervisor to start it on boot and restart it after a failure. Keep logs with restricted access, monitor both the local process and YouTube’s stream-health display, and alert someone when the process stops or the feed becomes unhealthy.
Test recovery deliberately: confirm what happens after an FFmpeg exit, an instance reboot, a network interruption, or an ingest failure. Automatic restarts can recover a process crash, but a single EC2 instance can still be affected by instance, network, or YouTube ingest problems. Supervision and monitoring reduce blind spots; they do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong server URL or key, RTMPS unsupported or misconfigured, or outbound connectivity blocked | Copy the endpoint and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, confirm the RTMPS URL/path and port 443 connectivity, and inspect FFmpeg logs without exposing the key. |
| Stream starts but YouTube reports poor health | Bitrate or output settings are unsuitable, the connection is unstable, or the encoder cannot keep up | Compare the output with YouTube’s resolution/frame-rate bitrate guidance; check CBR, keyframe interval, CPU load, and the stream-health display. |
| Video stutters or the instance is overloaded | The chosen instance cannot encode the workload in real time, or costly filters/transcoding are being used | Benchmark representative content, reduce output demands where appropriate, and compare transcoding with compatible stream-copy options. |
| Playlist breaks at a file boundary | Inputs differ in stream layout, time bases, duration, or media properties | Validate the concat inputs and every transition; normalize incompatible files before depending on the sequence. |
| Stream stops and stays down | Encoder process exited without supervision, reboot recovery is absent, or the failure is outside the process | Check service state and logs, verify restart-on-failure and start-on-boot behavior, and check YouTube health and instance/network status. |
| Expected replay is missing | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive threshold | For future broadcasts, verify current archive behavior and use a shorter broadcast cycle if replay availability is important. |
