You can run a 24/7 YouTube music stream by sending media from an always-on Ubuntu host through FFmpeg to YouTube Live. Create a stream in YouTube Studio, use its server URL and private stream key, encode to YouTube’s recommended settings, and supervise FFmpeg with a service manager such as systemd. This keeps the process running across ordinary process failures, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: network or YouTube ingest problems still need testing and monitoring.
How do I run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with FFmpeg?
The basic path is authorized media files → FFmpeg on a host that stays online → YouTube Live ingest. You need a verified YouTube channel with live access, an Ubuntu machine or VPS that can remain online, FFmpeg, media you have rights to stream, and the server URL and stream key for a YouTube Live event.
1. Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check live access in YouTube Studio before building an unattended setup; eligibility and restrictions are controlled by YouTube. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or select the stream/event you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Enter them in FFmpeg’s output destination and stream-key configuration. YouTube documents this encoder workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, Git repository, screenshot, or publicly visible log. Store it in a restricted environment file or secret store, and restrict file permissions to the account running FFmpeg.
3. Prepare media and choose an always-on host
Put the audio and any accompanying visual material where the Ubuntu host can read them. For an unattended stream, use an always-on server or VPS rather than a laptop that may sleep, lose power, or disconnect. Check the host’s sustained upload capacity, storage, server region, and restart and monitoring options before choosing a hosting plan; the relevant requirement is a stable path to YouTube, not simply a high advertised peak speed.

4. Configure FFmpeg for YouTube Live
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bit rate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its listed video ingestion codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance specifies a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. Choose settings appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm acceptance in Live Control Room. Current guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
For H.264, YouTube’s current ingestion table gives these reference bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian home or VPS connection can sustain the upload.

These figures are for H.264 at the listed resolution and frame rate; do not treat them as universal targets for other codecs or as proof of available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing with audio and visual movement similar to the planned stream and checking stream-health messages.

5. Loop the inputs and supervise the process
FFmpeg can read local or server-accessible media and loop inputs when repetition is intended. The output must encode those inputs to compatible settings and send them to the event’s YouTube ingest URL using the protected key. An Ubuntu VPS, looping media files, and a systemd service to start the process at boot and restart it after failure form one published implementation pattern; it is an example, not official YouTube guidance or a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery. There is no single safe copy-and-paste FFmpeg command for every setup: input formats, FFmpeg build, stream key handling, chosen event, and reconnection behavior differ. Build and test the command for your own media and encoder version. Configure systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process exit, and make sure failures are logged. A service manager can restart a dead process; it cannot by itself repair a failed internet route, guarantee YouTube ingest recovery, or ensure the same live event continues. Test reconnect behavior and inspect both FFmpeg logs and YouTube Studio’s stream health.
What bitrate should I use for a YouTube live stream?
Use YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific ingestion guidance as the starting point, then test the actual upload path from your Ubuntu host. For H.264, the reference values are in the table above. Keep CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, use the stated 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. A bitrate that is correct for YouTube can still be too high for the server’s sustained upload connection, so monitor the test stream’s health rather than relying only on a speed test.

Can FFmpeg stream a looping playlist to YouTube?
Yes. FFmpeg can read media files accessible to the Ubuntu host and loop inputs so the encoded output continues. A systemd service can start the process after reboot and restart it after a process failure. That setup addresses file repetition and process supervision; it does not remove the need to test ingest reconnection, review logs, monitor YouTube Studio, or ensure every item in the playlist is cleared for live use.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive of one uninterrupted 24-hour session. Decide whether the channel needs recordings and, if so, plan shorter sessions or separate recording and archiving arrangements rather than assuming a single continuous live event will be saved in full. Only if the rights you hold cover the intended live-stream use and applicable territories; a license alone may not prevent YouTube from interrupting the stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning, a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. YouTube also says a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for licensed third-party content to avoid interruption. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights for use on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, public-performance licenses, and other royalty participants. For an India-based channel, confirm rights for each recording and composition, the territories covered, live-stream use, monetization, and any allowlisting directly with the rights holders or qualified counsel. The official guidance cited here is not a complete India-specific legal analysis; do not assume that music described as free, purchased elsewhere, or cleared for an ordinary video is automatically cleared for a live stream.
YouTube’s Creator Music guidance says the service is available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending, and that Creator Music tracks are not for live streams. - YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the selected event is live or ready to receive the encoder, that the server URL and key match that event, and that the host can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Check FFmpeg’s error output and Live Control Room.
- Stream health reports unstable delivery: Compare the configured video and audio bitrates with YouTube’s settings for the codec and output mode. Test sustained upload from the actual host, reduce the video bitrate or resolution if needed, and retest with representative content.
- FFmpeg stops after a reboot or failure: Check the systemd unit’s enabled state and logs, then confirm its user can read the media and secret file. Restart supervision covers process exits, not every network or ingest outage.
- The stream starts but is interrupted: Review YouTube’s copyright warning or notice. Check that the rights cover live streaming and the relevant territories, and ask the rights holder whether channel allowlisting is required.
- You need the full day’s recording: Do not rely on YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive statement for one 24-hour session. Plan shorter sessions or an independent recording workflow.
