VLC can repeat a music playlist, but playlist repeat alone does not create a YouTube livestream. A working setup needs two separate parts: continuous playlist playback and an encoder feed that YouTube can ingest. VLC documents playlist and network-output workflows, while YouTube documents its own stream URL, stream key and encoder requirements; the cited VLC examples do not establish a complete direct VLC-to-YouTube RTMP(S) recipe. Use the steps below to prepare and validate the pieces, and do not assume a local VLC loop is live on YouTube until you have verified the encoder connection in YouTube Studio.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube music stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- VLC and audio files you have the right to broadcast on YouTube.
- An encoder workflow that sends a YouTube-compatible feed. YouTube requires an encoder stream URL and stream key; VLC’s documented playlist-repeat and local HTTP examples do not, by themselves, prove that VLC is configured to ingest YouTube’s feed.
- A computer and network connection that can remain operational, unless you use a cloud service to run the stream.
Enable YouTube live streaming and create an encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. Complete any verification or eligibility steps shown there, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder you will use. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start with the stream in preview mode. Confirm YouTube receives the intended audio and video before you start the public broadcast.
For YouTube’s current setup sequence and eligibility details, use its live-streaming setup guide and encoder instructions.
Build and repeat the playlist in VLC
Prepare the audio files
Put the authorized tracks in a predictable folder and test that each file plays in VLC. A gap, unsupported file or damaged track can interrupt playback even if the playlist itself is set to repeat. Use files you are permitted to broadcast, not just files you can play locally.
Make a playlist and enable repeat
- Open VLC and add the tracks to a playlist in the order you want them played.
- In the playlist view, use VLC’s repeat control to select repeat-all rather than repeat-one. The exact icon placement can vary by desktop version and layout; confirm that the control indicates the full playlist will repeat.
- Play through the final track and verify playback returns to the first track. Also test a transition between every file type you plan to use.
This proves that VLC can cycle through your local playlist. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving a live encoder feed. VideoLAN’s documented stream-output examples describe processing media and sending output over a network; its playlist examples include local HTTP output. Those are not documented as a complete YouTube ingestion setup. See VLC streaming introduction and VLC streaming output.

Know the limit of VLC’s documented examples
VLC’s stream-output chain can process media and send it over a network, and VideoLAN documents sequencing multiple MP3 inputs with gather and keeping output open as tracks change with --sout-keep. Its VLM examples also show sequential playlist inputs. The documented examples use local HTTP output for network receivers; they do not show a verified VLC-to-YouTube RTMP(S) bridge. Do not paste a YouTube stream key into an arbitrary VLC destination and assume the output is compatible. If you assemble a separate bridge or encoder, test the whole chain on your operating system and VLC version, including track changes, playlist wraparound, reconnects and extended runtime.
Set the encoder format and protect upload capacity
Choose YouTube-compatible encoding settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the bitrate table on YouTube’s live encoder settings page for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every stream.

For a music radio presentation, decide what video accompanies the audio—such as a static visual or other rights-cleared material—and configure the encoder for that actual output. Verify both audio and video in the YouTube preview before going live.
Test the real connection
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Run a speed test on the connection the stream will use, then test with the actual resolution, frame rate, audio and moving-video load. Prefer a reliable connection and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators after starting. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
Possessing or purchasing a music file does not by itself establish permission to livestream it. YouTube’s terms require the rights needed for the content, including music licensing rights. Confirm that your permission covers a live YouTube broadcast, relevant territories, and any archive the platform creates. YouTube Terms of Service
YouTube may interrupt or terminate a live stream when it detects third-party content. If you have licensed music from a third party, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not on the rights holder’s allowlist, even when the content is licensed. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams

Plan for the parts playlist repeat cannot keep running
A repeat control only addresses playback order. It does not prevent a computer from sleeping, a power loss, an operating-system restart, an encoder crash or a network outage. For a self-hosted setup, disable sleep for the operating period, ensure the computer has power, use a stable connection, and define who will check the encoder and restart it after a failure. A single running playlist is not a guarantee of continuous publication.

Common problems and fixes
- VLC repeats locally, but YouTube shows no stream: Playlist repeat is playback logic, not proof of a compatible encoder feed. Check that a separate encoder or verified bridge is sending to the YouTube stream URL with the correct key, then confirm the feed in Live Control Room preview.
- YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health: Recheck the encoder’s codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval and resolution-specific bitrate against YouTube’s current settings. Check upload capacity and leave the recommended 20% headroom.
- Playback stops at a track boundary: Test the exact file sequence locally and in the complete encoder path. VLC’s documented streaming examples use options such as
gatherand--sout-keepfor sequencing/output behavior, but those examples are not a verified YouTube bridge. - The stream is interrupted after music is detected: Stop and resolve the rights issue before restarting. Confirm broadcast and archive permissions, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- The stream ends after an outage or restart: Check the computer’s power and sleep settings, network availability and encoder process. Arrange monitoring and a restart procedure; playlist repeat does not reconnect a failed encoder or restore a dropped feed.
- The archive is shorter or different from expected: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Check current Live Control Room controls and plan separate sessions or other lawful recording arrangements as appropriate.
