You can run a continuous YouTube music stream from Linux Mint by looping locally stored, properly licensed music through OBS Studio or FFmpeg and sending it to a YouTube Live event. The computer, encoder, power and internet connection must remain available, so this setup needs monitoring and recovery planning; it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Before you start, confirm that your music license covers YouTube live use and any archive, and plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation.
Before you start: check eligibility and music rights
Confirm the channel can go live
Verify the channel and check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch rather than waiting until the last minute. Use music you are entitled to stream
Use recordings you own or have explicit permission to stream. Confirm that permission covers YouTube live broadcasts, the territories where the stream may be viewed, and any recording or archive you intend to keep. Keep the license records available. Buying a track, crediting its creator, or seeing a “royalty-free” label does not by itself establish that continuous YouTube streaming is permitted.
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require the content provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a warning that is not addressed can lead to interruption or termination, and a copyright strike can also terminate a stream. If a rightsholder has licensed your use, ask whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist: a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.

Choose an encoder for Linux Mint

Both approaches send an encoded feed to YouTube. Neither removes YouTube’s archive limit or music-rights requirements, and there are no measured Linux Mint performance results here to establish that one is inherently more reliable. OBS is free and open source, and appears in YouTube’s encoder directory. Install OBS through a trusted source compatible with your specific Linux Mint release; package availability and installation steps vary, so do not assume one command fits every Mint edition.
Prepare a local music program
- Build a playlist from eligible files. Keep the audio on the Linux Mint machine rather than depending on a browser tab or rebroadcasting another stream.
- Choose a visual. A still image or looping visual can accompany a music-only program. Make sure you have rights to any artwork or video as well as to the music.
- Test the complete loop. Check transitions, volume, silence, file compatibility and the visual before going live. A broken file or playback source will not be fixed by an encoder restart.
- Save rights documentation. Keep licenses and any written Content ID allowlisting confirmation where you can retrieve them.
Create the YouTube Live event and connect Linux Mint
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create or schedule a stream, then locate the server URL and stream key for the event.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, publish it in a configuration file, or expose it in shell history or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Configure your encoder’s YouTube destination. In OBS, set YouTube as the service and enter the event’s stream key; if prompted for a server, use the URL YouTube provides. In FFmpeg, use the same server URL and key in the ingest destination, taking care not to leave credentials in public logs or shell history.
- Start sending the feed and inspect the incoming preview. Confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video and that the picture and sound are correct before making the event public or starting its broadcast.
Menu wording can change, and OBS layouts vary by version. Use the labels shown in your installed OBS and YouTube Studio rather than relying on a version-specific path that may not match your system.

Set video, audio and network settings
YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS where available. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current guidance.
A sensible modest starting point
For a music program with a static visual, 720p at 30 frames per second is a reasonable starting target. YouTube’s H.264 guidance gives 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for that setting. Those are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular home connection can sustain them. Check your real upload capacity and leave headroom for variation. If the connection struggles, lower the bitrate rather than assuming the computer’s CPU is the cause.

Test before committing to a long broadcast
- Use the actual playlist and visual, not a short placeholder that behaves differently.
- Check that the audio is audible and not distorted, and that the video source does not unexpectedly end.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s status during a test.
- In OBS, rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection state can indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Investigate the network route or reduce bitrate.
Keep the stream running and plan recovery
A 24/7 broadcast depends on every link in the chain: Linux Mint computer, media playback, encoder process, power, home network and YouTube ingest. For a desktop OBS setup, disable automatic sleep and prevent scheduled shutdown while the stream is expected to run. Confirm that the source loops and that the machine will stay powered.
For unattended use, configure the encoder to start at boot and arrange logging, health checks and a tested restart policy. A process supervisor such as systemd can restart an encoder after a process exit, but it cannot repair an ISP outage, power failure, invalid stream key, defective media file, YouTube-side interruption or rights takedown. Test recovery deliberately: stop the encoder, restore it, and verify that the stream returns as expected. Do not treat a restart policy as uptime redundancy.

Understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single 24-hour event is therefore not a dependable way to preserve a full day’s program. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
If keeping a recording matters, schedule shorter broadcasts and/or make a local recording. Check that the recording file is growing and can be played back. YouTube recommends a local recording backup; an external SSD or hard drive is optional storage, not a requirement to send the live stream. Estimate storage from your recording bitrate and how long you want to retain files.
