To run a YouTube livestream continuously with OBS, connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio, start the encoder, verify its preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then start the event. A 24/7 setup needs more than a working stream: YouTube may not archive a stream that exceeds 12 hours, and an internet interruption can break it. Plan local recording and connection recovery separately.
YouTube’s published guidance describes a general workflow, not a special India-specific rule. The eligibility and technical guidance below is YouTube’s current help guidance checked on October 3, 2026.
Can you run a 24/7 YouTube livestream with OBS?
OBS can send a continuous encoder feed to YouTube, but an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast depends on the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection continuing to work. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Its guidance recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom.

Also distinguish a continuous broadcast from a complete recording of it. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, use and monitor a separate local recording workflow.

Check YouTube livestream eligibility first
Before configuring OBS, confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance also says livestreamers must be at least 16 years old. These are YouTube’s general requirements, not India-specific eligibility rules.
How do I connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room?
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Open Live Control Room and select the Stream tab. Create a stream or choose existing stream settings.
- Copy the connection details: Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room.
- Set up OBS: Select an encoder configuration that your measured upload capacity can sustain. The appropriate resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate depend on your intended stream and connection; there is no single setting that fits every setup.
- Test the feed: Use audio and video motion similar to what you plan to broadcast. Start streaming from OBS and check Live Control Room for the incoming preview, stream health, and any messages.
- Start the event: For a scheduled stream, wait until the preview is ready, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting OBS sends the encoder feed; Live Control Room is where you confirm and start the scheduled event.
Choose encoder settings and internet headroom
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together, based on YouTube’s encoder guidance and the upload capacity you can sustain. Test with representative audio and motion rather than assuming a connection that works for a static image will handle the finished stream.

- Keep the total streaming bitrate below the available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom.
- Use a stable connection and monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
- Test any backup encoder failover you have configured. YouTube recommends testing backup encoder failover where available.
YouTube’s guidance does not specify an Indian ISP, router, UPS, or failover design. Optional backup power or network equipment may help reduce interruptions, but that is a setup choice rather than a YouTube requirement.
Can YouTube archive a 24-hour livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream that runs continuously for 24 hours. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The limit matters if you need a complete replay or source file after the broadcast.

Record locally if you need the full stream
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Configure a separate local recording workflow and make sure the computer has enough available storage for the duration and quality you choose. An external SSD is an optional way to provide local storage; YouTube does not require or prescribe a particular drive.
While live, check that the local recording file is growing. A live preview alone does not confirm that the separate recording is being saved successfully.

What to monitor while the stream is live
- Preview and stream health: Confirm that Live Control Room receives the feed and check its health information and error messages.
- Connection and continuity: Watch for interruptions that can break the stream; leave the recommended upload headroom.
- Local recording: Verify that the recording file continues to grow if you need a complete archive.
- Live metrics: Live Control Room provides stream health, duration, viewer metrics, and errors while the stream is live.
Common problems and what to check
