You can run chess game VODs as a 24/7 YouTube Live feed by sending a looping playlist from an encoder such as OBS to a YouTube broadcast. The encoder—not a normal YouTube playlist or VOD upload—provides the continuous live video. Before launching, clear the rights to every game recording and audio track, test the feed, and plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation.
How the 24/7 setup works
YouTube Live accepts a continuous feed from an encoder. You create or select a live broadcast, copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder, and configure the encoder to play your chess VODs in a loop. YouTube’s API documentation even uses a 24/7 feed as an example of a live broadcast. Chess.com names OBS and Streamlabs as software options for streaming chess content. This is different from uploading a video or making a YouTube playlist: viewers see a live watch page, while the encoder is responsible for playing the source files and keeping the feed running.
Prepare the VODs and confirm you can stream them
Clear rights for every element
Use recordings you own or have explicit permission to stream and archive. Check the game footage, commentary, music, overlays, and any third-party tournament feed separately. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” YouTube livestream terms

Make the playlist loop cleanly
Check that each file plays from beginning to end, has the intended audio, and does not expose private information. Build a playlist in the order you want viewers to see the games, and enable looping in the encoder or playback source. If the encoder’s playlist handling is uncertain, test the transition from the final file back to the first before going live.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Create the live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and locate its stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder with these values. YouTube encoder setup
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, add a media or playlist source for the chess VODs, enable looping, and set the output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Choose a sustainable video profile. YouTube recommends RTMPS ingestion and supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Its current encoder guide allows up to 60 frames per second, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. - Set bitrate to match the connection. The following are YouTube’s recommended bitrates for the listed resolutions and frame rates, current as accessed October 3, 2026; settings guidance can change. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain rather than maximizing quality by default.

A static chessboard may remain readable at a lower resolution and bitrate than fast-moving footage. Test board legibility at the chosen output size, especially for clocks, notation, and small interface labels.
- Start privately or unlisted first. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview before scheduling or making the broadcast public. Confirm the right VOD is playing, the audio is present and balanced, the watch page opens for the intended audience, and YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Check upload headroom. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. This is a platform recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion or outages. Use a wired connection where practical and avoid saturating the same connection with uploads or other heavy traffic. YouTube recommended encoder settings · YouTube live streaming tips
- Verify a backup recording. If you are recording locally as a backup, confirm the file is being written and growing before relying on it.
Plan for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
Do not assume a single week-long or indefinite broadcast will be saved as a replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Keep your own local archive if the recordings matter. YouTube live stream archiving · YouTube DVR guidance

If a YouTube replay and rewind are important, consider ending and restarting the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours. This is a practical way to work within YouTube’s stated threshold, not a guarantee that every segment will be archived. Retain independent local recordings for dependable preservation.

DIY with a local encoder
A local OBS setup gives you direct control over playback and output, but the computer, power, encoder, and internet connection must remain available for the feed to continue. Plan for interruptions and check the stream periodically if you rely on that arrangement.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube shows no signal: Check that the encoder is connected to the broadcast’s server URL and that the matching stream key is entered correctly. Regenerate the key if it may have been exposed, then update the encoder.
- The preview buffers or stream health degrades: Lower the bitrate or output resolution, check the upload connection, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total bitrate. Test again before returning to a public broadcast. YouTube live streaming tips
- Video plays but audio is missing or wrong: Check the media source’s audio routing and encoder audio selection, then verify playback in the private or unlisted test.
- The playlist stops or fails to return to the first game: Check the source’s loop setting and file availability. Test the last-to-first transition; do not assume a playlist repeats merely because its first pass works.
- YouTube interrupts the live feed: A Content ID match can cause a placeholder and warning; unresolved detected content may temporarily interrupt or terminate a stream. A license alone may not prevent interruption: YouTube says a licensed channel may need to be added to the rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Resolve the match with the rights holder and confirm the allowlisting where relevant. YouTube live Content ID guidance
- There is no replay, or viewers cannot rewind: Check the broadcast duration. Past 12 hours, YouTube may not capture the archive and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
