You can configure OBS to send a YouTube live stream from a DigitalOcean Droplet, but the available official guidance does not establish a complete, tested recipe for running OBS unattended on headless Linux or recovering it automatically after a failure. This guide covers the verified YouTube, encoder, network and billing steps—and identifies what you must validate before relying on a Droplet for continuous broadcasting.

What you need to know before setting up a 24/7 stream

A Droplet is a Linux-based virtual machine. OBS encodes your broadcast and sends it to YouTube; YouTube then distributes the live stream to viewers. A continuously available broadcast requires more than a successful initial connection: the encoder must keep running, the network must remain available, and the stream must recover if either side disconnects.

YouTube and DigitalOcean documentation establish the platform requirements, recommended encoder settings and relevant transfer billing. They do not establish exact steps for running OBS without a conventional desktop session, supervising its process or automatically restarting it after a failure on a DigitalOcean Droplet. Treat those pieces as deployment work to test—not as a verified, guaranteed 24/7 setup.

Check that your YouTube channel can go live

YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Confirm eligibility before configuring OBS. If YouTube does not permit live streaming on the channel, encoder settings will not fix that restriction.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to broadcast before configuring the encoder.
  2. Get the current ingest endpoint and stream key. Use the stream details in Live Control Room, or select OBS’s YouTube RTMPS preset if available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address. Do not publish it, place it in public logs or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the stream. If it is compromised, YouTube documents resetting it.

Choose OBS settings for the stream you plan to send

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table to match bitrate to your output resolution and frame rate. Its recommendations are guidance, not proof that a particular Droplet can encode or sustain that output. The figures below are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not guaranteed requirements.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are only some rows from YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific guidance. Check its live table for other output combinations rather than extrapolating from the examples.

  • Protocol: RTMP or, preferably, RTMPS.
  • Video encoder: H.264.
  • Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate.

Set the output resolution and frame rate to match the material and the Droplet configuration you have actually validated. A higher bitrate can improve the source sent to YouTube, but it also increases the sustained upload requirement and outbound data use. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers; that does not remove the need to send a stable source stream.

Configure and verify the OBS connection

  1. Set the service and server. In OBS’s stream configuration, select YouTube RTMPS if offered. Otherwise, use the current RTMPS URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Enter the stream key privately. Copy the key from the selected YouTube stream into OBS. Treat it like a password; do not paste it into a public tutorial, screenshot or shared configuration.
  3. Match output settings. Apply the selected resolution, frame rate, H.264, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings. Check YouTube’s current table for the specific output you chose.
  4. Test representative content. Before depending on the stream, test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the preview and inspect its stream-health messages before going live.

This sequence describes the YouTube-to-OBS configuration. It does not resolve how OBS should be installed or kept alive in a headless Linux session; the official material available for this topic does not verify those deployment or process-recovery steps.

Plan for network headroom and interruptions

YouTube advises keeping total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% of that capacity unused. For example, a stream whose total bitrate is 10 Mbps needs a connection with at least 12.5 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity to preserve 20% headroom. This is a planning calculation, not a claim that a Droplet provides that capacity under every condition.

Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a stream, so a successful preview at one moment is not proof of uninterrupted service. Validate the actual Droplet configuration, its sustained network performance and the recovery behavior you intend to use before treating it as a 24/7 channel.

Estimate outbound transfer and Droplet charges separately

Estimate stream data

For a rough transfer estimate, use the average total outbound stream bitrate—not just the video bitrate—multiplied by runtime. With bitrate in decimal Mbps, a useful approximation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbound data in GiB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8 ÷ 1,024.

At a constant total bitrate of 10 Mbps, 24 hours works out to about 100.6 GiB before protocol overhead. Actual usage depends on the stream’s total bitrate and runtime. Compare expected and actual outbound data with the team’s pooled included allowance, rather than assuming each Droplet has a separate allowance.

Check DigitalOcean billing

DigitalOcean’s Bandwidth Billing documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says Droplet plans include outbound transfer, the allowance and usage pool across Droplets on a team, inbound transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is listed at $0.01 per GiB beyond the included pool. The rate and plan allowances can change, so check current terms and your team’s consumption before estimating an overage.

DigitalOcean’s Droplet Pricing documentation, last verified 25 August 2026, describes Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines. For bundled CPU Droplets, charges begin at creation and continue while the Droplet is powered off because compute resources remain reserved; billing ends when you destroy the Droplet. A complete cost estimate therefore depends on the chosen Droplet plan, runtime, actual stream bitrate and team-wide transfer use. No particular Droplet size is established here as adequate for OBS encoding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to validate before relying on this as a 24/7 deployment

  • Whether your chosen Droplet can run the required OBS workload and output settings continuously.
  • How OBS will run in your Linux environment without relying on a desktop session you have not validated.
  • How the process will be monitored and restarted after an OBS, VM or network failure.
  • Whether a YouTube disconnect requires a manual action, a fresh stream session or some other recovery procedure in your setup.
  • How you will receive alerts and check both OBS and YouTube stream health when you are not watching the session.

Test those cases before using the setup for a broadcast that must remain available. Do not assume that OBS automatically recovers or that a Droplet guarantees uninterrupted YouTube streaming.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream Stream selection, endpoint or key Confirm OBS is using the endpoint and key for the selected Live Control Room stream. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS.
Stream health reports connection or bitrate trouble Upload capacity, bitrate or interruptions Check that available upload capacity exceeds the total stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test the connection and monitor stream-health messages.
Video looks unstable or YouTube flags encoder settings Output configuration Check H.264, CBR, the two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and the bitrate recommended for the chosen resolution and frame rate.
Broadcast stops after a disconnect or OBS failure Process supervision or recovery Check whether OBS is still running and whether YouTube still receives the stream. The setup’s restart and reconnection behavior must be tested in your environment; the cited platform guidance does not establish an automatic recovery procedure for headless OBS on a Droplet.
Unexpected bandwidth overage Actual bitrate, runtime or pooled team usage Compare actual outbound data and stream runtime with the team-wide included allowance, then check the current DigitalOcean billing terms.
