You can use a Mac mini as the encoder for a continuous YouTube Live broadcast by sending a prepared ocean-audio feed through streaming software such as OBS to YouTube’s Live Control Room. First enable live streaming on your channel, configure and test the encoder, and monitor the broadcast. The main limitation is archiving: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so make a separate local recording if you need a replay. No particular Mac mini model or 24/7 configuration is established as guaranteed to run without intervention.
Before you start: channel access, audio rights, and a stable connection
Enable YouTube Live ahead of time
Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Confirm you can stream the ocean recording
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the video with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream, and a strike can also end it. If you have licensed third-party audio, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist: a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Use audio you created or a license that covers livestreaming, the territories where the stream will be available, monetization if applicable, and any replay you plan to keep. Confirm Content ID handling with the rights holder. The rights status of your particular ocean recording is not established here. YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
Plan for the connection and power you have
Choose a resolution and bitrate your internet connection can sustain continuously, and test before launch. A speed test is a useful starting point, but it does not establish that a connection will stay stable all day. Keep the Mac mini and network equipment powered and connected for the period you intend to broadcast; the available guidance does not establish that any specific Mac mini model, macOS version, or power configuration will run indefinitely without attention.

Set up the Mac mini encoder stream
- Prepare the feed. Have your ocean audio and a visual ready in the streaming software. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as compatible with HLS ingestion. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify the exact OBS scene steps for looping an audio file or still image, so confirm that your chosen source and OBS version behave as intended in a short test rather than assuming a particular setup.
- Create or manage an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you will use. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it or show it in a public recording. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Select a resolution and sustainable bitrate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee about your upload connection. A static ocean visual may not need 1080p detail; choosing 720p30 can be a reasonable bandwidth trade-off if it looks acceptable with your source material. That is a practical judgment, not a YouTube requirement. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations before going live.
- Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS is another option; OBS is listed among encoders that can use YouTube HLS ingestion, and you must select HLS in the Live Control Room when using it. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. For a non-interactive ambient stream, that extra delay may be acceptable, but select the protocol your encoder workflow supports and follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements if you use HLS. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from the encoder, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and inspect it before going live. Check that audio is audible, the visual is present, and the stream health indicators do not show an unresolved problem. YouTube’s encoder tips also recommend checking that the event is accessible from channel and watch pages and on mobile devices.
- Go live and monitor it. After the preview is correct, start the broadcast in the Live Control Room if the stream is not configured to go live automatically. During the event, monitor stream health, YouTube messages, and audio/video quality. These checks reduce the chance that a problem goes unnoticed; they do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. Refer to YouTube’s encoder tips.
RTMP or HLS: which should you use?
| Option | When it fits | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | You want YouTube’s recommended encrypted delivery option and your encoder supports it. | Use the server URL and stream key for the selected event, and confirm the encoder is configured for the correct protocol. |
| HLS | Your encoder supports YouTube HLS ingestion, or your workflow needs HLS-specific capabilities such as HDR or codecs unsupported through RTMP. | It has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments, and requires selecting HLS in the Live Control Room and meeting YouTube’s HLS requirements. |
For a static ambient broadcast, ultra-low latency is usually not the central need. That is an inference about this use case, not a platform rule. YouTube’s protocol and format requirements can change, so check its current encoder guidance when configuring the stream.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve the full replay of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours. If retaining a replay matters, record locally, then plan how to segment, store, and verify those recordings; YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and its DVR guidance.

During a test, verify that the local recording file is growing and that the audio is present. A continuous recording also needs enough storage and a plan for creating manageable segments; the available guidance does not prescribe a specific Mac mini recording setup.

- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. If this is the first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- The Live Control Room does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that you copied the server URL and stream key for the selected event, that they are entered in the correct encoder fields, and that the encoder is using the intended protocol. If using HLS, select HLS in the Live Control Room and follow its specific requirements.
- The preview is blank or missing audio: Check the encoder’s selected visual and audio sources, then confirm the correct feed appears in the Live Control Room preview before going live. Test the complete feed before relaunching a long broadcast.
- The stream health shows problems or the stream drops: Check the connection and encoder messages, then reduce the resolution or bitrate if the upload cannot sustain the chosen settings. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and testing beforehand; no particular Mac mini setup is guaranteed to recover without intervention.
- Licensed audio interrupts the broadcast: Contact the rights holder and ask them to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license may not prevent YouTube’s detection system from interrupting the stream.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording when a complete archive is important, and verify the recording while the broadcast is running.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded ocean audio playing on YouTube without leaving the Mac mini and home connection running, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.
