You can use a Raspberry Pi as a YouTube Live encoder, but keeping a Marathi-song stream running around the clock depends on four things: a channel eligible for live streaming, rights to every recording and composition, an encoder and network connection that pass a sustained test, and a recovery plan for failures. Raspberry Pi 5 is a candidate, not a proven 24/7 streaming appliance; validate your exact hardware and software before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and has live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A Raspberry Pi, power supply, cooling, storage, and a dependable internet connection. Pi 5 specifications include a 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit processor, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, microSD support, RAM options through 16GB, and 4Kp60 HEVC decoding; those specifications do not establish continuous performance for your chosen encoder workload. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.
  • Encoder software configured for YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum). Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube encoder settings.
  • Audio and any accompanying visuals that you are authorized to broadcast live on YouTube, including the relevant territories and any replay or monetization plans.

Pi 5’s listed HEVC decoding capability is not evidence of a hardware H.264 encoder. Raspberry Pi’s camera-oriented rpicam-vid documentation discusses software video encoding and camera workflows, but does not validate an FFmpeg audio-playlist setup or prove that a particular stream can be sustained. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation.

Clear music rights before building the stream

Possessing a song, buying a download, or having access through a music-streaming subscription does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for obtaining necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube livestream terms.

Check the actual scope of permission

For each recording and composition, confirm that permission covers live streaming on YouTube, the territories you intend to reach, monetization if applicable, and keeping an archived replay. Keep the license or written authorization available. Rights for any particular Marathi song cannot be inferred from its language, age, source, or availability elsewhere.

Ask about Content ID allowlisting

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid matching-related interruption. A Content ID match is not itself a ruling on whether you hold a license. YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Choose and prepare the Raspberry Pi setup

Match the workload, not just the resolution

A static image or simple visualizer paired with audio differs from a camera feed or complex animated scene. The visual workload affects encoding demand, so test with the exact scene, encoder, resolution, and bitrate you plan to use. Do not assume that a Pi model’s video decoding specification guarantees equivalent encoding performance.

Use wired networking where practical

Gigabit Ethernet is available on Pi 5; Wi-Fi is another option, but either way the important measure is stable outbound capacity at the Pi’s location. YouTube recommends approximately 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Measure sustained upload performance, not only a brief peak, and leave capacity for normal network variation. Plan for heat, storage, and power

An always-on encoder needs suitable power, cooling, and storage. Check temperature and throttling during a representative test, verify that media storage is dependable, and consider what happens after a power interruption. Raspberry Pi’s hardware information does not provide a 24/7 reliability rating for this use.

Set up the YouTube live stream

  1. Verify and enable the channel: complete channel verification and check live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. Enable live streaming early; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Eligibility details.
  2. Create the broadcast: in YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow the encoder workflow shown there. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  3. Copy the stream key securely: use the key shown in the stream’s settings to connect your encoder. Treat it as a password: do not publish it in scripts, screenshots, source control, or public troubleshooting posts. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio. Manage live stream settings.
  4. Configure the encoder: select an accepted protocol and codec, use CBR, and set a two-second keyframe interval where configurable. Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it.
  5. Run a private or unlisted test: send representative audio and visuals, preview the feed in Live Control Room, check stream health, and monitor the Pi’s CPU load, temperature, audio continuity, storage, and network stability. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a stream is healthy because the encoder says it is connected. YouTube live-streaming tips.
  6. Go public only after review: check that the correct audio is playing, the visual is intentional, the stream is healthy, and the broadcast settings and rights match your plan.

Choose a bitrate and test upload capacity

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these frame sizes and frame rates. The 480p recommendation is higher than the 720p recommendation in this table, so use the stated figures rather than assuming bitrate always rises with resolution. They are YouTube recommendations, not a special preset for music-only streams. YouTube’s encoder settings.

Output target YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate Approximate upload capacity with 20% headroom*
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 3.6 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 4.8 Mbps

*The capacity column applies YouTube’s approximately 20% headroom recommendation to the video bitrate alone. Add the audio bitrate and any other outgoing traffic before estimating the total connection requirement. The practical target is stable upload capacity above the full stream bitrate, not just the figures in the video column. YouTube network guidance.

Keep the stream running and plan for recovery

A 24/7 stream can fail because the encoder process exits, the Pi overheats or loses power, the local connection drops, or YouTube interrupts the feed. A service manager or supervisor can restart a failed local encoder, but it cannot restore a failed internet connection, fix an exposed stream key, or guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect.

  • Configure a local supervisor to restart the encoder after a process failure, and confirm its logs make repeated failures visible.
  • Decide how the stream should behave after power or network recovery; test reconnection and verify that the correct broadcast resumes.
  • Monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room and the Pi’s CPU, temperature, network, and audio output. Do not treat an unattended process as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
  • Keep a recovery path for replacing the stream key and for responding to rights claims or other YouTube-side interruptions.

These are general reliability practices, not a YouTube guarantee. No official source establishes a tested Raspberry Pi build or a reliability figure for uninterrupted 24/7 Marathi music streaming.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
You cannot start a live stream Check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and has completed first-time live enablement. Activation can take up to 24 hours. Eligibility guidance.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Check that the correct current stream key and server details are entered, the key has not been reset, and the encoder is using a supported protocol. Keep the key private. Stream settings.
Stream health shows instability or viewers see buffering Measure sustained upload at the Pi, account for audio and other traffic, and leave roughly 20% headroom above the full stream bitrate. Try wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is fluctuating. Network tips.
The Pi slows down, overheats, or the audio breaks up Test CPU load and temperature with the exact visual and encoder settings; reduce the visual workload or output target and retest. Confirm storage and power are stable. Pi 5 specifications do not prove a chosen encoding workload will sustain continuously.
A licensed song still triggers a live interruption Contact the relevant rights owner or administrator to confirm the license scope and request Content ID allowlisting for your channel. A license does not automatically prevent a matching system from interrupting the stream. Copyright guidance for live streams.
The stream stops after an encoder or connection failure Check supervisor and encoder logs, verify whether the process restarted, and inspect Live Control Room before assuming viewers are receiving the feed. A local restart mechanism cannot repair an internet or YouTube-side issue.

Costs and hardware context

The Pi board is only one part of the setup: allow for appropriate power, cooling, storage, and a stable internet connection. Raspberry Pi’s September 28, 2023 Pi 5 launch announcement listed starting prices of $60 for 4GB and $80 for 8GB before local taxes; those are historical launch prices, not current retail prices.
