To run a continuous jazz stream on YouTube, use Liquidsoap to schedule and mix audio, pair that audio with a visual source, and send the encoded audiovisual output to YouTube Live using the channel’s stream key. The software can keep a playlist moving, but a reliable 24/7 channel also needs suitable hosting, monitoring, music rights, recovery planning, and an archive strategy.

How the Liquidsoap-to-YouTube setup works

Think of this as a small broadcast chain: Liquidsoap supplies and schedules the audio; a still image, video loop, or other visual source supplies the picture; an FFmpeg-backed encoder combines and encodes them; and Liquidsoap sends the result to YouTube’s ingest endpoint with your stream key. Liquidsoap’s official examples cover playlist-driven radio and a YouTube Live output pattern.

This is different from sending audio to an internet-radio server such as Icecast. YouTube receives a video stream with audio. You can add a separate Icecast output if you also want a conventional radio endpoint, but it is not required for YouTube.

Prepare the channel, audio, and rights

Check YouTube Live access before building the broadcast

In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and follow the channel’s setup prompts. YouTube’s requirements include channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your intended launch.

Use music you are entitled to broadcast

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every recording and for the relevant channel and territories. Owning a copy of a song or having permission to play music in another setting does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it on YouTube. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can cause an interruption or termination if it is not resolved. If a rights holder licenses content and requires it, ask about allowlisting the channel; do not assume a license automatically prevents Content ID action.

Organize a playlist that can keep playing

Put only cleared recordings in the playlist location your Liquidsoap configuration will read, and check that the files are readable and in supported formats for your installed build. Liquidsoap’s playlist examples show scheduling, rotation, jingles, and crossfades. Use those features to shape the station, but make sure the source has a defined continuation or fallback behavior so the output does not simply end when a playlist runs out or a file fails.

A live input or a secondary playlist can serve as fallback material if your programming calls for it. Liquidsoap’s examples include falling back to a video playlist when a live RTMP source is unavailable. Treat that as a design pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted transmission: test how your chosen sources behave when an item is missing, a source disconnects, or the playlist reaches its end.

Choose a visual source and pair it with the audio

Still image

A single cover image is the simplest visual approach for a radio-style channel. The Liquidsoap book’s video-stream example uses single("image.jpg") as an image source and source.mux.video to pair video with audio. These are conceptual clues to the documented pattern, not a complete configuration to paste without checking your installed version.

Loop or live visuals

A suitable video loop or live visual production can make the stream more dynamic, but it adds video handling and encoding work. Choose visuals you have the right to use, and test that they remain synchronized with the audio. Liquidsoap’s FFmpeg guidance notes that video uses more CPU than audio, so plan host capacity for the actual encoding workload rather than assuming an audio-only radio setup is sufficient.

Whichever option you choose, verify the resulting picture in YouTube’s preview. A still image is not a substitute for checking that the video track is present, correctly sized, and stable.

Configure Liquidsoap to encode and send the stream

Use a version-matched configuration

Liquidsoap references vary by release. Pin the Liquidsoap version you install, confirm that its build has the needed FFmpeg support, and follow the reference for that exact version. The current Liquidsoap homepage demonstrates an output.youtube.live.rtmp pattern with H.264 video and AAC audio; the versioned reference describes the YouTube RTMP output, its default ingest URL, the secret key, the encoder, and automatic start behavior. Do not combine snippets from different versions and assume every operator or option is interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At a high level, your configuration needs to:

  1. Load and schedule your cleared jazz playlist, with any intended rotation, crossfade, jingles, or fallback sources.
  2. Create or supply the visual source, then mux it with the audio source.
  3. Configure the FFmpeg-backed YouTube output with the intended video and audio encoders and the ingest details from YouTube Studio.
  4. Start the output and verify that YouTube receives both picture and sound.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Its recommended H.264 video bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 frames per second and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 frames per second. Check YouTube’s live encoder table when configuring the stream because its settings can change; select the row for your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating those examples as universal settings.

Set the outgoing bitrate to a level your host and network can sustain. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; account for both primary and backup streams if you send both. A bitrate that works in a short test can still fail under sustained network congestion, so monitor stream health during a longer run.

Connect the YouTube stream key safely

In YouTube Studio’s live control room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the stream you intend to run, then enter the ingest details in the Liquidsoap output configuration. The exact fields and syntax depend on the Liquidsoap version and output reference you use.

Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a configuration shared publicly, paste it into screenshots, or commit it to a public repository. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration with the replacement. YouTube documents resetting a compromised stream key.

Test the whole chain before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with a short preview. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the stream connects and that both audio and video are present.
  2. Check sound quality. Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected gaps, distorted transitions, and excessive level changes between tracks.
  3. Check the image and sync. Make sure the visual source appears as expected and that audio and video remain synchronized.
  4. Inspect YouTube stream health. Watch the encoder status and warnings while the stream runs; YouTube advises testing encoder output and continuously monitoring quality.
  5. Test recovery deliberately. Verify what happens if Liquidsoap or the host restarts, the network drops, or a source file is unavailable. Confirm that the service supervisor and output start behavior do what you expect.
  6. Verify recording and archive behavior. If you need a complete record, test your local recording path and available storage independently of YouTube’s archive.

Keep the broadcast operating around the clock

Choose a host for sustained video encoding

You can run Liquidsoap on a machine you control or on a hosted server. The choice depends on the visual and encoding workload, stable upload capacity, service supervision, recovery and failover arrangements, storage, and cost. The available official guidance does not establish a universal minimum hardware specification or a universally best hosting provider. Measure the load and stability of your chosen configuration rather than relying on a generic machine-size promise.

Supervise the process and watch the output

A playlist that loops is not the same as a service that recovers from every failure. Include process supervision and restart behavior in your operations plan, and monitor both the host and YouTube’s stream health. Decide who will respond to a failed process, exhausted disk space, a disconnected network, or a rights-related interruption. A second encoder or backup route may improve recovery, but it also adds configuration, bandwidth, and operational complexity; test the failover path rather than assuming it will work.

Plan local recordings and YouTube archives separately

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on the platform archive for a complete record of a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If retaining the full program matters, run a separate local recording and size storage for the bitrate and retention period you need. An external hard drive can be one local backup medium, but the required capacity depends on your recording settings and how long you retain files.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube never receives the stream

  • Likely causes: incorrect ingest details, a mistyped or reset key, an unavailable encoder/output, or missing FFmpeg support in the installed Liquidsoap build.
  • What to check: compare the output configuration with the reference for your Liquidsoap version, recopy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and confirm that the process starts without configuration errors.

The stream connects, but YouTube reports poor health

  • Likely causes: upload capacity too close to the stream bitrate, network instability, or an encoder configuration that does not match YouTube’s current guidance.
  • What to check: verify codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, and sustained upload capacity. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the total bitrate.

There is audio but no picture, or the picture is wrong

  • Likely causes: the visual source is missing, the audio and video were not muxed as intended, or the output’s video configuration is incompatible with the installed version.
  • What to check: confirm the image or video path is readable, inspect the video-source and mux setup against the version-matched Liquidsoap reference, and test the preview before restarting a long run.

The playlist stops or falls silent

  • Likely causes: unreadable or missing files, an exhausted playlist with no intended continuation, or a source failure without fallback content.
  • What to check: validate file paths and permissions, confirm playlist scheduling and fallback behavior, and test the failure case with a short controlled run.

The broadcast is interrupted over a music match

  • Likely cause: YouTube has matched third-party content or a rights holder has not authorized the channel through the applicable process.
  • What to check: follow the notice in YouTube Studio, confirm the rights and channel arrangements for the recording, and contact the rights holder about allowlisting if appropriate. Do not restart the same disputed material on the assumption that the match will disappear.

Operational checklist for launch

  • Live access is enabled and the channel meets YouTube’s current requirements.
  • Every recording and visual asset is cleared for the intended broadcast.
  • The Liquidsoap release and FFmpeg capabilities are known, and the configuration follows that release’s reference.
  • The playlist, visual source, mux, encoders, ingest URL, and protected stream key have been tested together.
  • Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval align with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and available upload capacity.
  • Monitoring, process recovery, local recording, and storage retention have been tested as separate parts of the operating plan.
