You can run a continuous YouTube drum and bass radio stream with FFmpeg by feeding it a rights-cleared audio-and-video source, sending the output to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, and supervising the encoder so a process or network failure does not go unnoticed. Prepare and test the source first: a stream that stays connected is not necessarily one YouTube considers healthy, and a broadcast longer than 12 hours is not automatically archived as a complete video.
What you need before you start
- A computer or cloud host that can stay online, with FFmpeg installed and a stable connection to YouTube. If FFmpeg must encode video in real time, check that the host can handle the intended resolution and frame rate; a pre-encoded, compatible source may be sent without re-encoding.
- A continuous source with both audio and video. For a radio channel, that can be a prepared video containing your music and artwork, a visualizer, or another moving visual. Make sure the final output includes the video stream expected by your chosen YouTube ingest configuration.
- A YouTube channel that has live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take time, so enable it before your planned launch rather than assuming you can start immediately.
- The ingest server URL and stream key for the broadcast, found in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository, include it in a screenshot, or write it to broadly accessible logs.
- Permission to use every recording, composition, and visual asset in the stream. A track being available online, or a DJ mix being commonly streamed, does not establish that you have the rights needed for your particular broadcast.
Check the FFmpeg build on the actual host before deployment, including whether it has the encoder you plan to use. YouTube recognizes both computer software encoders and standalone encoders; this guide uses FFmpeg on a computer or cloud host.
Prepare a continuous drum and bass source
Choose what FFmpeg will loop
The simplest predictable setup is to prepare a long-form radio programme or visual-and-audio loop as one file, confirm that it plays correctly from beginning to end, and have FFmpeg loop that file. This avoids relying on every track in a live playlist having matching codecs, sample rates, channel layouts, and timing. Check the transition at the end of the file as well as the beginning; a loop that clicks, goes silent, or shows a blank frame will repeat that fault indefinitely.
If you want individual tracks to rotate or change order, build and verify a continuous programme from those tracks before sending it, or use a playlist workflow you have tested with the FFmpeg build on your host. Do not assume that an arbitrary mix of media files can be stream-copied into one uninterrupted live feed: incompatible formats or timestamps can require re-encoding or preprocessing.

Decide whether to copy or encode
- Stream-copy: use this only when the prepared file’s codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio, and container are compatible with the intended YouTube ingest. It uses the source’s existing encoded streams rather than making new ones. It cannot fix an unsuitable source or adjust its bitrate and keyframe timing.
- Re-encode: choose this when you need to create a consistent output format, add a visual to audio-only material, or control resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes. Real-time encoding requires enough CPU or hardware-encoder capacity to sustain the chosen output.
A drum and bass radio stream still needs a valid video stream if that is what the selected ingest configuration expects. Test audio and moving visuals representative of the final programme, not just a silent test card or a short audio-only file.
Create the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Select the intended visibility and configure the broadcast for the format you plan to send.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the exact endpoint from Studio rather than guessing an address or reusing a key without checking which broadcast it belongs to.
- Store the URL and key in a private configuration file or a secrets mechanism available to the service that runs FFmpeg. Restrict access to that configuration. Do not paste the actual key into a public command example, shared terminal recording, source code, or logs.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, follow the Studio preview and Go Live workflow; starting the encoder is not a substitute for completing the required Studio action.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted ingest connection. Its RTMPS ingest guidance uses TLS and port 443. Use the RTMPS server address provided in Studio and verify the endpoint and configuration if the connection fails.
Set FFmpeg output to YouTube’s current guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for current RTMP/RTMPS guidance, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so do not treat one bitrate as correct for every output.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a concrete H.264 starting point, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Choose the entry that matches your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s current encoder table. The figures here are those specific H.264 table entries, not universal requirements or a promise of a particular viewing result.

| Output element | Guidance to apply |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS. Confirm your FFmpeg build and encoder support before choosing. |
| Video bitrate | Use YouTube’s entry for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. H.264 examples in the table include 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p30. |
| Rate control | CBR is recommended. |
| Frame rate and keyframes | Up to 60 fps; a 2-second keyframe interval is recommended, with no more than 4 seconds. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. |
| Ingest transport | Use the RTMPS endpoint from Studio for encrypted ingest; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies TLS on port 443. |
Example: loop a prepared programme and encode H.264/AAC
This is a command template for a prepared file that already contains both the radio audio and the desired video. It loops the file and encodes a 1080p30 H.264 video stream with stereo AAC audio. Substitute the private RTMPS server URL and stream key supplied in Studio; do not put a real key in a published script. The command is an illustrative configuration, not a tested deployment recipe, and the host must be able to encode in real time.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i radio-loop.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -b:v 5000k -minrate 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Here, 5,000 kbps corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation; a GOP of 60 frames at 30 fps sets a two-second keyframe interval. Check the complete current YouTube table before choosing a different codec or output mode. Confirm that your source contains the mapped video and audio streams and that its aspect ratio is appropriate for the chosen output; add deliberate scaling and aspect-ratio handling if it is not 1920×1080. If your private server URL already includes the key path or uses a different format, construct the destination according to the exact details Studio provides rather than blindly appending the key.

If a prepared file already matches the codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe, and audio requirements, a stream-copy output may avoid unnecessary re-encoding. The basic shape is ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i radio-loop.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY". This does not change or repair the source parameters. Run FFmpeg continuously and recover from failures
Use a supervisor, not just a terminal window
For an always-on service, arrange for the operating system’s service manager or another process supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit, retain useful logs, and notify you when restarts occur. Configure the supervisor for your operating system and test its behavior rather than assuming a manually launched process will return after a reboot or crash.
Test at least two failure cases before launch: terminate FFmpeg deliberately and interrupt or remove the network connection. Confirm what the viewer sees, whether the supervisor restarts the process, whether YouTube receives a healthy signal again, and whether you receive an alert. Make sure a restart policy does not create a tight loop that repeatedly launches a broken configuration.

Monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube
A running FFmpeg process can still send unusable media. Check process state and logs, but also monitor the receiver-side stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s Live API exposes stream status and health status, including configuration warnings and errors; listed issue types include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Monitoring only whether the process exists will not catch all of these problems.

FFmpeg reconnect options are protocol-specific. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes reconnect options for particular protocols, including HTTP options, and a TCP keepalive setting for RTMP. Their availability and behavior depend on the input or output protocol and FFmpeg version. They do not by themselves guarantee that a dropped YouTube connection will resume the same broadcast successfully; process supervision and YouTube health checks remain necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a YouTube live stream run 24/7, and will it be archived?
YouTube’s Live API documentation describes a 24/7 live feed and a workflow in which an ongoing broadcast can continue while a second broadcast is started against the same incoming stream. That supports a continuous radio operation, but it does not mean that every 24-hour transmission becomes one complete archived video.
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Treat that as an archive limit, not a promise that a longer broadcast will be fully recorded or automatically divided into daily videos. Decide whether you need one ongoing live broadcast, successive scheduled broadcasts, or API-managed broadcasts, then test the exact viewer and archive behavior before launch. If complete archives matter, design the broadcast segments to fit the documented under-12-hour behavior and verify the resulting videos in your channel.

Rights, channel policy, and monetization checks
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the necessary permission for each sound recording and underlying composition, as well as any artwork or video. Check the applicable YouTube music, copyright, and monetization rules for your channel’s region and use case. Permissions can differ by track, territory, use, and monetization arrangement; no blanket assurance can be made for drum and bass tracks, label releases, DJ mixes, or playlists.

Keep evidence of permissions and review restrictions that may apply to the specific assets you plan to use. Do not assume that owning a copy, crediting the artist, using a short excerpt, or receiving permission for one platform automatically grants the rights needed for a YouTube livestream. Resolve rights questions before going live; a technical configuration cannot make an unlicensed programme authorized.
Choose where FFmpeg runs and account for the ongoing work
A self-hosted computer gives you direct control, but the computer, encoder, power, and network connection need to remain available for the broadcast. A rented VPS or other cloud host can keep the process away from your home equipment, but you must still check its sustained streaming policies, network capacity, encoding performance, and operating costs. The specific host requirements depend on whether FFmpeg is stream-copying or encoding the chosen video format in real time.
In either case, account for more than compute: include storage for source media, outbound bandwidth, backup copies, monitoring, restart handling, and the time required to respond to health alerts. No provider price or machine specification is universal for this workload, so compare current offers against the actual output bitrate and continuous runtime rather than choosing from a generic label such as “streaming VPS.”
