You can use a Raspberry Pi as a local playout and encoder host for a Punjabi folk music livestream: prepare a music playlist and visual, create a YouTube Live stream, configure an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and private key, then test the setup before leaving it unattended. But a Pi is not a proven plug-and-forget 24/7 appliance: continuous encoding, recovery after failures, and playlist transitions depend on the specific board, software, power, and network. You also need permission for each recording and composition you broadcast.

What you need to run the stream

  • A Raspberry Pi and power supply, a microSD card with Raspberry Pi OS, and a stable internet connection.
  • An encoder and playout setup that can send your music and a visual to YouTube Live. The official guidance does not establish a tested Pi-specific 24/7 audio-only recipe or a guaranteed encoder command.
  • A playlist of recordings you are authorized to livestream, plus a plan for archives and stream restarts.

This guide uses Raspberry Pi 5 as a current hardware example, not as a claim that earlier models cannot work. Its published specifications include a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, microSD, Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB ports, and USB-C power input. Its listed 4Kp60 HEVC capability is for decoding; it does not establish a supported or tested 24/7 video-encoding profile. Raspberry Pi 5 product brief

Prepare the Pi

Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite on an SD card of at least 8 GB when a desktop is unnecessary, and a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5, with 5 V at 5 A as the recommended power level. The card recommendation covers the operating system guidance; size storage for your music library separately, and do not treat the minimum capacity as an endurance guarantee. Prefer Ethernet when it is practical: Pi 5 has Gigabit Ethernet as well as dual-band Wi-Fi. A wired local link may avoid Wi-Fi-specific disruption, but your router, internet service, and power remain potential failure points. Raspberry Pi 5 product brief

Create a YouTube Live stream

  1. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned launch. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  3. Start the encoder and check the preview. YouTube says the watch page is created when the encoder starts sending. For a scheduled stream, check its preview in Live Control Room before selecting “Go live.”

YouTube lists both software and hardware encoders in its help, and currently names Gyre as a third-party cloud service for prerecorded-video 24/7 streams. That listing alone does not establish endorsement, pricing, rights clearance, or a Raspberry Pi recipe. YouTube encoder setup guidance

Set encoder output and test it

Use YouTube’s ingest guidance as a target, then choose only settings your encoder and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and supported codecs. Its recommendations include H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo audio, it gives 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps guidance. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Output target YouTube guidance
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended
Stereo audio 44.1 kHz sample rate; 128 kbps
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a measured capacity for your Pi or internet connection. Run an upload-speed test and a preflight with audio and motion like the intended broadcast. For music over still artwork or a simple visualizer, test the exact resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate you plan to use. Watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room during testing. Validate unattended operation before launch

Do not assume that a successful short test proves the system will run continuously. Test cold boot, playlist transitions, audio continuity, a network interruption and recovery, and thermal behavior. Confirm how you will detect a stopped encoder and who will respond. No particular process supervisor, reconnect script, or Pi media-playlist configuration is established here as a guaranteed solution.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 channel therefore needs an explicit plan for whether it needs archives and how broadcasts will transition. One operational approach is to end a broadcast and begin another before it reaches 12 hours, but YouTube’s cited page does not specify a best restart schedule or establish that a particular Pi tool can automate a seamless transition. Monitor the dashboard and arrange a way to notice if the encoder stops sending. YouTube live stream encoder guidance

Clear rights for every recording

Before streaming, establish that you have permission for both the composition and the specific sound recording. Check that the permission covers livestreaming, intended territories, monetization if applicable, and keeping an archive or video on demand (VOD). Keep licenses or permission records with your playlist.

A traditional or public-domain melody does not by itself clear a modern recording of that melody. A consumer music subscription or a YouTube account also does not automatically demonstrate the rights needed to livestream a particular track. The rights status of any specific Punjabi folk recording depends on the actual work, recording, ownership, and territory; it must be checked independently.

Local Raspberry Pi or cloud playout?

A Pi gives you a local host to configure and maintain. You remain responsible for its power, network connection, encoder, and recovery plan. A cloud service moves playout away from the home computer, but it does not remove the need to use properly cleared music or manage YouTube’s stream and archive behavior.

Costs and monetization

A local setup requires the Pi, power supply, SD card, and any additional storage or network equipment you choose; retail availability and prices vary by location. These parts do not guarantee stream reliability. YouTube says channels in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize livestreams, but running a stream does not itself guarantee eligibility, ads, or revenue. YouTube live stream encoder guidance

Troubleshooting before and during the broadcast

  • You cannot start a live stream: If this is the channel’s first livestream, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check that live streaming is enabled before troubleshooting the encoder.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the Pi has internet access. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • Stream health reports problems: Compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s recommended codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate guidance. Test upload capacity rather than assuming the Pi’s Ethernet or Wi-Fi specifications guarantee sufficient internet upload.
  • Broadcast stops after a power or network interruption: Verify what the encoder does after a reboot or lost connection. Test recovery behavior in advance and arrange a way to detect that the feed has stopped; no Pi-specific automatic recovery method is established here.
  • An archive is missing: Check whether the broadcast ran for 12 hours or longer; YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep a separate archive plan if the recording matters.
  • A track receives a copyright claim or restriction: Review the rights and permissions for the exact recording and composition. Folk or traditional status alone is not proof that the recording is cleared.
