You can run a prerecorded Marathi music livestream from a Linux VPS by having FFmpeg play your audio and visual assets, encode or package them, and send the stream to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube delivers the stream to viewers; the VPS runs the playback and encoding process. A static cover image with stereo music is a much lighter workload than high-motion video, but there is no universal VPS size or setup that guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Start with a short test, check YouTube’s stream health and your server’s resource use, then decide whether the provider and configuration suit your real workload.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained CPU capacity, outbound bandwidth, storage, and transfer allowance for your chosen media and output settings. YouTube does not prescribe a universal CPU, RAM, or VPS plan for this job.
- FFmpeg, which reads media, encodes or muxes it, and sends the resulting stream. See the FFmpeg documentation.
- Marathi music and visual assets that you own or are properly licensed to stream and archive in the territories you intend to reach.
- A way to supervise and restart the FFmpeg process, plus logs or health checks. A restart policy can recover some local process failures; it does not verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy, visible stream.
Do not choose a server based only on a headline CPU or bandwidth number. Benchmark a representative playlist and visual, and check sustained CPU use, network stability, storage, transfer limits, and your provider’s rules before committing to a plan.
Choose a sensible streaming format
Start with a testable 720p30 H.264 stream
YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend 6 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 at 720p30, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval. Treat that bitrate as an ingestion recommendation—not a VPS plan requirement or a guarantee of visual quality. Allow additional network capacity for audio, protocol overhead, and other traffic, and verify the VPS’s actual sustained outbound allowance. Use AAC or MP3 audio and test with the actual music and visual treatment you plan to run. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder settings.
Match resolution to the visual
A static cover image or restrained visualizer paired with stereo music does not automatically benefit from a high resolution. Higher output resolutions and more motion can increase encoding demands and bitrate needs; weigh those against viewer needs, server capacity, and transfer limits. Do not assume that a configuration will work simply because it works for a short sample—test sustained operation with representative assets.

Use RTMPS as the ordinary starting point
For a typical software encoder, RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended starting point and encrypts the ingest connection. HLS and DASH support different codecs and higher-resolution use cases, but YouTube’s protocol comparison notes greater segment-based latency than RTMP protocols. Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. If this is its first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or configure the livestream in Studio and copy the ingest/server URL and stream key required by your encoder. The exact screen labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio; use the current encoder setup flow in YouTube Help.
- Store the stream key as a secret, such as in a permissions-restricted environment file or secret manager on the VPS. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public command history, or logs. Anyone with the key may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
- Use RTMPS for the encoder connection unless you have a specific reason to select another supported ingest protocol.
Prepare the Marathi catalog and visual assets
Before configuring a continuous playlist, gather the music, cover art, and any visual loops you plan to use. Keep written evidence of ownership or licenses and confirm that the rights cover livestreaming and any retained archive in the territories where viewers may access it. A license does not itself guarantee that YouTube’s matching systems will let a live broadcast continue: for licensed third-party works, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before a long test.

Decide how the playlist should behave at its end: repeat the whole sequence, rotate selected tracks, or use a longer prepared program. Check file formats and transitions beforehand. The FFmpeg command depends on those assets, whether they can be passed through without re-encoding, and your intended output settings, so validate your actual setup rather than copying a command written for different files.

Install FFmpeg and run a short test from the VPS
- Provision a Linux VPS and install FFmpeg from a trusted package source. Keep the operating system and packages maintained.
- Upload the media assets, check that the VPS has enough free storage, and confirm FFmpeg can read the playlist and visual sources.
- Build an FFmpeg playback/encoding command for your chosen assets and YouTube output settings. Configure the output to use the YouTube ingest URL and securely supplied stream key over RTMPS. Avoid embedding the key in a publicly readable script or a command that will be copied into logs.
- Start with a short private or unlisted test broadcast. Confirm that the video appears in Studio, audio is continuous, loop transitions behave as expected, and YouTube reports a healthy stream.
- During the test, monitor sustained CPU and memory use, network stability, disk space, and outbound transfer. Extend the test enough to expose issues that a brief preview would miss.
- Only after the test succeeds should you configure continuous playback. Document how to stop the process, update the playlist, and recover it after a VPS reboot.
FFmpeg’s options and input behavior depend on the source files and filters you choose; consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options relevant to your command. YouTube’s settings and its stream-health feedback are the reference for the ingest target, not a substitute for testing the VPS itself.

Keep playback running and make failures recoverable
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or equivalent supervisor configured to restart a failed process. Add useful logs and a basic alert or health check. Rehearse recovery after a VPS reboot and confirm that the service starts with the correct playlist and secret key. A process that is running locally can still be disconnected, misconfigured, or unhealthy at YouTube, so check both server-side process status and YouTube Studio’s stream-health feedback.
- Check that the playlist has not ended or become unreadable and that disk space has not run out.
- Monitor outbound connectivity and the provider’s transfer allowance, especially if the stream runs continuously.
- Review logs for FFmpeg errors and restart loops rather than assuming that automatic restart solved the underlying cause.
- Schedule maintenance and decide in advance how to restore the broadcast if the VPS or network becomes unavailable.
Plan around YouTube’s archive behavior
YouTube automatically archives livestreams shorter than 12 hours. Do not rely on a single continuous broadcast longer than that to produce a complete archived video. If retaining a full program matters, plan separate shorter sessions or make separate recordings. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Rights and live-stream enforcement
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. If you have permission to use a third-party work, the owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the stream to avoid enforcement interruptions. Copyright clearance and monetization review are different decisions. YouTube reviews reused and repetitive content at the channel level; its policy says collections of songs from different artists may fail reused-content review even when the creator has permission. The policy also identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as “inauthentic content,” and the July 15, 2025 update states: “This type of content has always been ineligible for monetization under our existing policies, where creators are rewarded for original and authentic content.” Consider whether original curation, commentary, presentation, commissioned music, or other meaningful viewer value makes the channel genuinely distinctive.
