You can run a 24/7 lofi radio stream on YouTube with OBS by looping music and visuals in an OBS scene, sending that feed to YouTube with the matching stream key, and keeping the computer and internet connection running. First enable live streaming on your channel, clear the music and visuals for livestream and archive use, and test the full broadcast before announcing it. OBS does not keep a local setup running if the computer, OBS, or connection fails.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live access enabled.
- A computer capable of running your chosen OBS scene and encoder, plus a stable upload connection suited to your selected resolution and frame rate. There is no universal hardware minimum established for every setup.
- Music and visuals you have permission to use in a YouTube livestream, rebroadcast, and any archive or on-demand video you plan to publish.
- OBS Studio, your prepared media files, and a plan for outages and recordings.
Enable YouTube live access early
YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; it also states that live streamers must be at least 16 years old. Google’s production guide says first-time live access verification can take 24 hours, so enable it well before launch. Live broadcasts remain subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and restrictions or removals can affect the channel. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming · Google’s live-production guide
Clear every piece of media
Confirm that each music license covers the uses you intend: the live stream, rebroadcast, and audio or video on demand. Check applicable territory, duration, monetization, and archive terms. A track described as “copyright free” or “royalty free,” or a credit in the description, is not by itself proof that you have the necessary rights. Keep the license terms, track list, and permission records somewhere you can retrieve them.

Use an original or properly licensed illustration, animation, or visual loop. Check how it appears on the output canvas so that it is not unintentionally cropped or surrounded by black bars.

Configure YouTube and OBS
- Create or select the YouTube stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream or broadcast. Set its title, description, privacy, and other channel options. YouTube Studio is the recommended management workflow. A basic OBS setup does not require an API integration.
- Copy the matching stream key. Copy the key for the selected YouTube stream and enter it in OBS’s YouTube streaming configuration. A key for a different stream can prevent the encoder feed from starting. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public description, screenshot, or message.
- Build the OBS scene. Add your lofi audio source and visual loop, then check the OBS preview. Make sure the audio is audible and the visual is framed correctly. Choose the output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate to suit your media, computer, and upload capacity.
- Set video and bitrate deliberately. OBS’s YouTube setup guide points to YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations. Use those recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you actually select rather than treating one bitrate as universal. A 16:9 canvas is a practical YouTube choice to avoid black bars; 30 or 60 fps are possible choices, depending on the motion in your visuals and what your system and connection can sustain. OBS Project’s YouTube streaming setup guide
- Start the encoder, then verify the broadcast. Select Start Streaming in OBS. In YouTube Studio, check the incoming preview and stream status. Where the workflow requires it, take the broadcast live in the Live Control Room. Confirm the viewer-facing stream and audio there; an OBS preview alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Rehearse before going public. Run a private or unlisted test. Check for silence, clipping, frozen visuals, awkward loop seams, dropped frames, incorrect privacy settings, and copyright or Content ID notices. A clean rehearsal helps catch common setup problems but cannot guarantee there will be no later claims or interruptions.
Choose a stream structure and plan archives
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the incoming encoder feed (liveStream) from a broadcast event (liveBroadcast). Its documentation describes a setup where a continuous feed remains active while one broadcast ends and another begins. This is useful context if you need to change or schedule broadcast events; a typical creator can still manage the stream in YouTube Studio without writing code. The platform’s ability to represent a continuing feed does not keep your computer or encoder online. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
Do not assume a 24/7 program will survive as one complete YouTube archive. Google’s 2025 live-production guide says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” For streams longer than 12 hours, it advises the creator’s team to record the program and upload it manually. If keeping the full program matters, plan a separate recording and a way to divide, store, and publish files; ensure that your music permissions also cover those recordings and uploads. Keep the local OBS stream running
A local OBS broadcast depends on every part of the chain staying available: the computer must remain powered and awake, OBS must keep running, its audio and visual sources must remain accessible, and the upload connection must stay usable. YouTube’s broadcast model supports continuous programming, but it does not make OBS self-recovering if the host or connection fails.
- Set up the computer so sleep, scheduled updates, or an automatic restart will not unexpectedly stop the broadcast. Test those behaviors before relying on an unattended setup.
- Confirm that media files will remain available at the paths OBS uses, and that the audio loop restarts cleanly.
- Test what happens after a brief network loss or OBS restart. Know how to reconnect the encoder and check the Live Control Room afterward.
- Decide who will notice an outage and how quickly they can intervene. Restart automation or a watchdog may help, but no particular method is prescribed by the official guidance cited here.
- Make recordings independently if you need a reliable copy of the program; a live feed and a saved archive are separate concerns.
A desktop OBS workflow gives you control over scenes and sources but requires a local computer to remain in operation. A hosted service is another way to keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a home computer on; compare the service’s current terms, supported media, recovery behavior, cost, and recording options before choosing one. A third-party RadioTech guide discusses desktop and VPS approaches as practical commentary, not YouTube policy or a comparative reliability benchmark. RadioTech Studio’s guide

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not start sending the feed | The stream key does not match the selected YouTube stream, or the key was entered incorrectly. | Copy the key again from the intended stream in YouTube Studio and update OBS. Do not share the key publicly. |
| YouTube does not show a healthy incoming feed | OBS has not connected successfully, the connection is unstable, or the encoder settings exceed what the computer or upload link can sustain. | Check OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators, verify the stream status in Live Control Room, and revisit the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations and your available upload capacity. |
| The YouTube preview has no sound or distorted sound | The OBS audio source may be missing, muted, routed incorrectly, too quiet, or clipping. | Check the scene’s audio source and meters, then listen to the YouTube preview during a test before launch. |
| The picture is frozen, cropped, or has black bars | The visual source may have stopped, or its dimensions and the OBS canvas may not match. | Check that the source file or loop is still available and adjust the canvas or source framing. A 16:9 layout is a common YouTube choice. |
| The stream stops while unattended | The computer slept, OBS closed, the operating system restarted, a media source became unavailable, or the network dropped. | Check the host’s power, sleep, update, and restart settings; confirm source-file paths; and test reconnection and restart procedures before running unattended. |
| A copyright or Content ID notice appears | The music or visual may be claimed, or its license may not cover the intended use. | Review the notice and your documented permissions. Do not assume that credit or a “copyright free” label grants livestream and archive rights. |

The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
