You can run a 24/7 lo-fi radio stream on YouTube by sending a looping playlist through a live-stream encoder such as OBS—or by using a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. Before you start, confirm that you have rights for every track and visual for live use and any replay, then verify your YouTube channel and check its live-stream eligibility. A 24/7 broadcast may not be archived by YouTube, and a music playlist is not automatically eligible for monetization.
Before you start: check channel access and music rights
Confirm YouTube live-stream eligibility
YouTube supports streaming with an encoder. Your channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Review YouTube’s live-streaming requirements before building the broadcast workflow.
Clear the entire program for live use
You need permission for the music and visuals you broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Check that the licence covers the intended platform, continuous live broadcast, audience geography, and any replay you plan to make available. A track being described as royalty-free, available online, or permitted for ordinary uploads does not by itself establish those rights.

If it detects material, it may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you; if the content remains, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated. Even if you have a licence, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist when necessary. YouTube explains this process in its live-stream copyright guidance.

Set up a playlist-based stream with a local encoder
This do-it-yourself workflow uses a computer to play your prepared program and an encoder to send it to YouTube. OBS provides official streaming and encoding help, but there is no single playlist configuration that fits every media file and OBS setup. Test your chosen playback method and encoder before relying on it for an unattended broadcast.
- Prepare the program. Put together the audio and visuals you want viewers to see, and confirm that every item is cleared for live use. Arrange the playlist in the order you want it to repeat. Keep a copy of the playlist and source files so you can recover from a restart.
- Verify the channel and open YouTube’s live control room. Check channel verification and restrictions, then create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the stream key and server details shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it or place it in a public screenshot.
- Configure your encoder. In OBS or another encoder, select the intended video and audio sources, then enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Choose output settings your computer and connection can sustain, and use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for supported settings; the sources here do not establish a universal resolution, bitrate, or keyframe interval for every channel and program.
- Start playback and check the preview. Begin the playlist in your playback workflow, start streaming from the encoder, and confirm that YouTube receives a stable picture and sound. Check the live control room for stream status and warnings before leaving the broadcast unattended.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube Studio and the live output for interruptions, playback ending, or a rights warning. A local workflow depends on the computer, encoder, playlist playback, and internet connection remaining operational; plan how you will notice and respond if one stops.
Plan for replays separately
Do not assume YouTube will preserve the full archive of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If viewers need a replay, arrange a separate recording and verify that your music and visual rights also cover that use.

Understand copyright and monetization as separate checks
Having permission to stream a track does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: YouTube may still detect it, and the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. Separately, permission does not guarantee that a channel or playlist qualifies for monetization.
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy, updated July 15, 2025, describes repetitive or mass-produced material under its inauthentic-content policy. Its reused-content policy also says collections of songs from different artists may be ineligible for monetization even when the creator has permission. Evaluate originality and monetization eligibility independently of copyright clearance.

Accepted YouTube Partner Program channels may have features such as Super Chat and Super Stickers available, subject to channel eligibility and platform rules. YouTube’s earning-money guidance does not establish that a lo-fi playlist stream will qualify or earn a particular amount.
Common problems and what to check
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction applies within the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube warns about third-party content or interrupts the broadcast: Review the detected material and your licence scope. If you are licensed to use it, contact the rights holder about adding the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- The broadcast stops when nobody is watching the computer: In a local encoder workflow, confirm the computer, playback, encoder, and internet connection are still operating. Decide how you will monitor and restart them if needed.
- The live replay is missing or incomplete: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Use a separate local recording if preserving the full program matters.
- You expect a music compilation to earn revenue: Recheck both YouTube’s originality and reused-content rules and the channel’s eligibility. A music licence alone does not settle monetization eligibility.
