You can run a 24/7 lo-fi radio station on YouTube by preparing music you have the rights to use, setting up a playlist and visual playback workflow, and sending its output to YouTube Live through an encoder. YouTube’s scheduled-event tools arrange the live event and viewer reminders; they do not schedule individual songs. Track order, timing, looping, and transitions must be handled by your playback or automation setup.

What you need for a continuous YouTube music stream

  • Music cleared for the intended use: original tracks or permissions and licenses that cover YouTube live streaming and, if relevant, replay or archive use.
  • A playback and automation workflow: it must play the visual and audio program, advance or loop tracks as intended, and handle interruptions predictably.
  • An encoder and a connection to YouTube Live: the encoder sends the live audio and video feed using a stream URL and stream key from YouTube.
  • Monitoring and a recovery plan: someone or something must detect a failed feed, audio problem, or interruption and respond.

YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows. You do not need specialist hardware to begin, but the chosen playback system must meet your requirements for unattended scheduling and continuity. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream function as one option for scheduling prerecorded media and streaming it directly to YouTube Live without a computer; it is not a requirement, and you should confirm any playlist, metadata, and recovery features you need with the device documentation. YouTube’s encoder guide lists supported encoder routes and setup information.

Clear music rights before you launch

You are responsible for having the rights needed for the content in your live stream. That can involve rights held by artists, labels, publishers, and other participants, and terms may vary by territory and by whether you also make a replay available. Keep written records of permissions and license terms; a credit line or a music service subscription should not be treated as broadcast permission unless its terms explicitly grant the rights you need.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A live feed can be interrupted when a match is detected. YouTube also warns that even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting where applicable; a license by itself does not guarantee that automated matching will leave the stream uninterrupted. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Choose how tracks will play and how the feed will be encoded

Keep the track schedule in the playback or automation system, not in YouTube’s event scheduler. Before committing to a setup, verify that it can perform the tasks your station actually needs:

  • Queue and advance the tracks in the right order, including any gaps or transitions.
  • Loop the playlist or visual program without requiring manual intervention.
  • Continue or recover after an application, power, network, or encoder interruption—and make clear which component is responsible for restarting playback and reconnecting.
  • Let you preview the output and check that both audio and video are healthy.
  • Provide a practical backup, such as a tested backup encoder or a separate recording of the program.

A computer with playback software and an encoder is a flexible starting point, but it depends on the computer, software, network, and power staying available. Dedicated hardware may reduce reliance on a general-purpose computer. YouTube documents the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as a standalone way to schedule prerecorded media for direct YouTube Live streaming, but the cited documentation does not establish every station’s playlist-management or failover requirements. Compare setups by scheduled playback, recovery behavior, operator workload, visibility into stream health, and cost. Do not assume a particular option is cheapest or includes a feature unless its current documentation confirms it.

Create and schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream. If you want an upcoming event page, schedule the stream from the Manage tab. You can reuse settings when appropriate.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream, then enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom streaming destination settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets it accept the encoder’s feed. Treat it as private: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or public instructions.
  3. Configure the playback system to send the intended lo-fi audio and visual program to the encoder. The playlist, track timing, and transitions belong to this system; scheduling the YouTube event does not create or manage a track list.
  4. Use the scheduled event’s upcoming watch page to share the event. Viewers may be able to opt into a reminder. YouTube’s event and encoder options also include auto-start and auto-stop settings; choose settings that match your operating procedure rather than assuming they control song playback.

See YouTube’s live encoder setup guide and instructions for scheduling a live stream for the current Studio workflow.

Test the station before making it public

Run a controlled test—such as an unlisted stream—before relying on the setup for a long broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Those are YouTube operational recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setup will work.

  1. Check the Live Control Room preview before the public start. Confirm the image is correct, the music is audible, and levels are not unexpectedly silent or distorted.
  2. Open the watch page on desktop and mobile. Confirm that the public-facing event shows the expected picture and sound.
  3. Let the playback workflow run through track changes and a playlist loop. Check for gaps, abrupt cuts, unintended silence, or a visual that stops while audio continues.
  4. Test the recovery path you intend to use. If you have a backup encoder, verify that it can take over; do not assume failover works until you have tested it.
  5. Check any local recording you plan to keep, including that it is being written and that it contains usable audio and video.
  6. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the actual watch page. A green preview at startup does not prove that a long stream will remain healthy.

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers previewing and monitoring. Its recommendations are useful starting points, but they do not promise continuous uptime for any encoder, network, or service.

Plan for interruptions and replay limits

Continuous operation is a system-design problem, not just a playlist setting. Identify what happens after a power loss, internet outage, playback-app crash, or YouTube disconnect. Decide who will notice, what can restart automatically, and how an operator can verify the stream is back. Keep a separate program recording if you need an independent copy, and test the restart procedure before depending on it.

YouTube states that live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise a complete automatic archive for a 24-hour stream. If a full replay matters, consider shorter scheduled sessions, recording a local master, or another segmentation approach, then test the archive and replay behavior you intend to use. Do not assume that one uninterrupted day-long broadcast will yield a complete replay.

Monetization is channel-dependent

YouTube documents live-stream features including ads and Super Chat, and memberships for some channels. Availability depends on channel eligibility and feature restrictions; a 24-hour format does not itself establish eligibility or guarantee ads, revenue, or any particular audience result. Check the current requirements in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s live-streaming information before planning around a feature.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a computer or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo runs a prerecorded YouTube stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay running at home; StreamNeo keeps the uploaded program going from the cloud.
  • Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot—there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
  • It can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.

The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
