You can run an internet radio station on YouTube by sending a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. The practical setup is to confirm live-stream access, secure the music rights, connect an encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, test the feed, and arrange monitoring and recovery. YouTube documents encoder streaming, but does not promise that one stream can stay live indefinitely or that a continuous broadcast will be fully archived.
What you need for a continuous YouTube radio stream
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming.
- Music or talk content you have the necessary rights to broadcast.
- An encoder: software on a computer or standalone encoding hardware.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your stream.
- A plan for monitoring silence, connection problems, encoder failures, and copyright interruptions.
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends a live feed to the platform; it does not itself provide a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. The computer or hardware encoder, connection, content rights, and monitoring arrangements remain part of running the station.
1. Confirm that your channel can go live
Verify your YouTube channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Check access before planning a launch: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Clear the rights for every part of the broadcast
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to use your live content. YouTube’s terms say broadcasters represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants: YouTube livestream terms and conditions.

Do not assume that buying a track, subscribing to a music service, or finding music described as royalty-free or public domain automatically clears it for a YouTube live broadcast. The actual permission depends on the applicable rights and license terms, including whether live use, territories, and any archive are covered.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even if you have a license, a match can interrupt the stream if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting where needed, and review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams before going on air.
3. Choose an encoder and connect it to YouTube
YouTube supports encoder software running on a computer as well as standalone encoder hardware. Its documentation lists verified encoder options, while noting those products are not made by YouTube. Choose an option that supports unattended operation and that you can monitor and recover if something fails. OBS is listed in YouTube’s HLS encoder guidance, but HLS is not required for a basic radio stream.

- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the matching fields in your encoder. The URL identifies where the feed is sent; the key authorizes it.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in your live-stream settings and update the encoder. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
- Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder and follow YouTube’s current settings for that protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure ingestion option. HLS is another path for supported encoders, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP; it is not a default requirement for a simple radio station.
4. Set audio, video, and bitrate sensibly
A radio stream still needs a video signal. It may be a visualizer or other suitable image, but test the actual presentation rather than assuming audio alone is enough for your chosen setup. YouTube transcodes streams for viewers, but you should still verify the stream’s health and how it plays on the watch page.
- Encoding mode: YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Stereo audio: The documented recommendation is 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio in its encoder settings guidance.
- Video bitrate and resolution: Choose settings that your encoder and upload connection can sustain. Higher bitrate requires more stable upload capacity. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the selected resolution and protocol rather than guessing a bitrate.
These recommendations are drawn from YouTube’s published live encoder settings; confirm the current values when configuring your encoder, since platform guidance can change.
5. Test the stream and leave upload headroom
- Test with representative program audio and video, including transitions or playlist changes you expect to use.
- Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast.
- Open the public watch page and confirm that the stream works on desktop and mobile and that both sound and picture are acceptable.
- Check your actual upload speed and stability while the encoder is running. YouTube recommends leaving 20% beyond the total stream bitrate; include primary and backup feeds in the total if you use both.
- Monitor audio and video quality during transmission. YouTube’s streaming tips advise testing and checking the stream rather than relying only on configured settings.
6. Plan for monitoring, outages, and archives
For a 24/7 station, decide who or what will detect silence, a stalled encoder, network failure, or a policy interruption, and what will happen next. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream, but its cited guidance does not promise automatic recovery for every outage or guaranteed 24/7 uptime. Test your own recovery procedure before depending on an unattended broadcast.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will be fully archived, nor that one live session can remain active indefinitely. If you need reliable recordings, plan separate recordings or shorter sessions and verify that each archive is available.

Running an encoder yourself gives you control over the machine, software, and configuration, but the station depends on that setup and its connection. For a continuous broadcast, include the cost and effort of a dedicated computer or hardware, power, internet, monitoring, and recovery in your decision. YouTube’s published sources do not establish typical setup costs or guarantee that a particular encoder will run continuously without intervention.
