You can run a continuous YouTube Live feed of prepared children’s stories from Ubuntu by using FFmpeg to send compatible video and audio to YouTube’s ingest server. You need a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, media you have permission to stream, a reliable internet connection, and a plan for supervising the process. A continuous feed is not the same as a guaranteed 24-hour YouTube archive: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
How the Ubuntu and FFmpeg setup works
Ubuntu is the computer or server that hosts your media and runs FFmpeg. FFmpeg reads a prepared video or sequence of videos, loops or schedules the inputs, encodes video and audio to settings suitable for YouTube, and sends the output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube Studio provides the stream URL and stream key. The computer or server must remain powered on, connected, and able to sustain the stream unless you use a cloud streaming service instead.
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. Review the current eligibility and setup steps in YouTube’s live-streaming help. YouTube may also impose daily limits on creating live streams, so a recurring or segmented design should not rely on rapidly recreating events to bypass a limit.

Use an Ubuntu machine you already have
A local Ubuntu desktop or server can be a practical choice if it can stay on and has sufficient sustained upload bandwidth, storage, cooling, and restart access. The stream stops if the machine, power, or internet connection fails, so plan how you will notice and recover from interruptions.
#1 Best Overall
Use an Ubuntu VPS or cloud host
A rented server can keep the encoder separate from your home computer and connection, but it still depends on the host’s availability, network, storage, and your ability to monitor and restart services. A public repository describes an Ubuntu VPS, FFmpeg, local media, YouTube ingest, and systemd service as one implementation pattern; it is an example, not an official YouTube recipe or a guarantee of unattended uptime. See the public GitHub repository example and assess the actual configuration before relying on it.
Compare a local machine and a VPS on sustained outbound bandwidth and headroom, uptime and restart/alert access, media storage and local recording needs, cost, and whether you already have the host. No particular VPS provider or host cost is established here.
Decide whether one long event or an archive matters more
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. A 24/7 public feed therefore does not guarantee a complete 24-hour replay. If viewers need an on-demand copy, record locally and consider shorter scheduled events, while remembering that YouTube does not promise uninterrupted availability or unrestricted repeated stream creation. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Set up the YouTube live event and stream key
- Verify access and eligibility. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and confirm that the channel can go live. Initial activation or restrictions may affect availability; follow the prompts shown for your channel.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, choose the encoder option in the live control workflow and create or schedule the event. Configure the title, description, visibility, and audience accurately.
- Copy the ingest details. Take the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings. Enter them into FFmpeg’s output configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your event. Do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or public repositories.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Start a short test stream first. Confirm that the preview shows the intended story, that sound is audible, and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming signal before scheduling a long run.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API also exposes a selfDeclaredMadeForKids field for a broadcast and a separate read-only madeForKids status. Automation does not replace the creator’s responsibility to classify the audience correctly. See the Live Streaming API documentation.
Choose compatible FFmpeg output settings
The exact FFmpeg command depends on the media layout, whether you are looping one file or sequencing several, the installed FFmpeg build, and your synchronization approach. No single command line is established as a tested, robust solution for every setup. Build and test the command for your media rather than pasting an unverified template into a long-running service.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 guidance for 720p at 30 fps lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate; its stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a given host or connection can sustain them. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

| Setting | Starting point from YouTube | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended | Use the secure ingest URL provided by YouTube Studio. |
| Video codec | H.264 | Confirm the installed FFmpeg build can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Listen for clipping, silence, and audio/video drift during a test. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use a sustained bitrate your connection can carry reliably. |
| Keyframes | 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Match the encoder configuration to the intended frame rate and interval. |
| 720p30 H.264 video | 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum | Reduce quality if the encoder or upload connection cannot sustain it. |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps | Check levels and intelligibility in the YouTube preview. |
YouTube’s network guidance recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Account for both primary and backup feeds if you use them. A speed test is only a snapshot: monitor actual stream health and leave enough headroom for normal network variation. See YouTube’s network and encoder tips.

Loop stories and supervise the stream
Prepare media deliberately
- Use story video, narration, illustrations, cover art, and music that you have permission to broadcast.
- Check that each file plays from beginning to end, with usable audio levels and no unintended silence or black frames.
- Decide whether the program is one repeating file, a sequence of stories, or a scheduled playlist. The input and looping method must match that media layout.
- Keep a separate local recording if you need a dependable copy for later editing or replay; do not assume YouTube will retain one continuous archive.
Make unattended operation observable
For a long-running process, use a supervisor such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and define what should happen if the process exits. Decide how logs are rotated and reviewed, how you will receive an alert, and how you will tell the difference between a failed encoder, a network interruption, and a YouTube-side disconnect. A restart policy can help recover from a process failure, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube accepts a reconnect or that a host remains online.
During operation, monitor the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health indicators, check that the program and audio remain correct, review FFmpeg and service logs, and verify that any local recording continues to grow. Test the recovery path before leaving the stream unattended. Avoid rapid restart loops or using repeated event creation to evade platform limits.

Set the children’s audience designation and protect rights
Choose the audience setting that accurately describes the content; do not select a setting merely to preserve interactive features or ad options. For a livestream designated as made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still appear. Any monetization also depends on the channel’s eligibility and applicable YouTube policies. See YouTube’s guidance on features restricted for made-for-kids content.
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Copyright matches or other policy issues can lead to restrictions or removal. Make sure you have rights to stream the story text, narration, illustrations, music, and other included material; the rights status of a particular work depends on the work and relevant jurisdiction. Review YouTube’s live-stream policy and archive guidance and its applicable platform rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, encoder not running, or outbound connection failure | Recheck the event’s stream settings, confirm the key was copied securely and correctly, and inspect FFmpeg output and host connectivity. |
| Stream health warns or playback buffers | Bitrate too high for sustained upload, network variation, or inadequate headroom | Check actual stream health, reduce the bitrate or resolution, and ensure the connection has the recommended 20% headroom over total stream bitrate. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or distorted | Incorrect audio mapping, unsupported output configuration, muted source, or unsuitable levels | Test the source locally, verify FFmpeg’s selected audio input and codec, and listen to the Live Control Room preview before resuming a long session. |
| Audio and video drift apart | Input files or timestamps do not align, or the selected synchronization strategy is unsuitable | Test the complete sequence and inspect timestamps and synchronization behavior for your media layout; do not assume one generic loop command will fit every file. |
| FFmpeg stops after a disconnect | Encoder process exited or did not recover from a network or ingest interruption | Inspect FFmpeg and service logs, test the supervisor’s restart behavior, and verify YouTube accepts the reconnect in the preview. Do not use rapid reconnect loops to bypass limits. |
| No complete YouTube replay appears | The event exceeded 12 hours or DVR/archive availability was limited | Use the local recording if available and plan shorter scheduled sessions when a platform archive is important. |
| Live features are unavailable | The stream is designated made for kids or the channel has an applicable restriction | Check the audience designation and YouTube Studio notices; do not misclassify the content to enable a feature. |
