You can use a Raspberry Pi as an always-on source and encoder for a 24/7 YouTube stream: prepare a licensed nature-sounds recording and visual, configure a YouTube Live broadcast, then send the audio-video program from the Pi using a supported encoder and RTMPS. The setup is feasible, but the exact command and reliability depend on your Pi model, software, media format, power, cooling, and network. No particular Pi build or FFmpeg pipeline is verified here, so test your complete setup before relying on it unattended.
What the Raspberry Pi setup does
The Pi runs the media playback and encoding process continuously, then sends the resulting live program to YouTube. Your program can combine a still image or subtle visual loop with a looping nature recording. The Pi must remain powered, connected to the internet, and able to keep its media process running; this is a do-it-yourself, on-premises setup rather than a cloud stream.
A Raspberry Pi 5 is one possible board, not a requirement or a proven best choice for this workload. Check the board and software you select against the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to encode. Raspberry Pi’s official product information is at Raspberry Pi 5.

Prepare the audio and visual assets
Clear the rights first
Nature sounds are not automatically free to rebroadcast. Record the sounds yourself or obtain permission that covers continuous streaming, public broadcast, and any monetization you intend to pursue. Check the rights for every sound, music track, and visual in the loop; retain license records and follow attribution terms. YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply to live content, so a repetitive loop should not be assumed to qualify for monetization.

Build a clean loop
- Choose recordings and visuals you have the right to use.
- Join the audio so the transition from the end back to the beginning does not click or create an abrupt change in level or ambience.
- Listen through the loop seam on the equipment you will use for testing, and check that the visual loop does not unexpectedly flash or cut.
- Keep source files and license documentation somewhere the Pi can access reliably.
Set up YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming on the channel. Follow YouTube’s account and channel requirements in YouTube’s live streaming setup guide. Availability may depend on your account’s status and YouTube’s current requirements.
- Create a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Set the title, description, visibility, and schedule as appropriate. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a broadcast and its associated live stream as separate objects; in the Control Room, use the stream configuration provided for the broadcast you are setting up. See YouTube Live Streaming API: getting started.
- Copy the stream configuration into your encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared script, or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls.
- Use the endpoint shown for the broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP through an SSL connection. Its RTMPS documentation specifies port 443 and correct SNI hostname handling for RTMPS clients. Use the endpoint and settings shown for your stream rather than copying an old example URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Choose the stream settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and frame rates up to 60 fps. The settings below are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for the specified modes, not a performance test of any Raspberry Pi or a guarantee about your internet connection.
| Video mode | YouTube H.264 minimum bitrate | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance and settings are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Select a conservative starting point
- Run an upload speed test on the connection the Pi will use. Leave headroom for normal variation; a speed test is a snapshot, not a promise of sustained throughput.
- Start at a resolution and bitrate your encoder and connection can sustain, then adjust after checking YouTube’s stream health.
- Test audio levels, the loop seam, and representative visual movement. YouTube specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
- Do not assume the Pi supports every listed codec or mode in your chosen software. Confirm the encoder actually available on your board and operating system.
Configure the Pi encoder and test the broadcast
Use FFmpeg, GStreamer, or another encoder compatible with your operating system, media inputs, and board. An exact command cannot be safely generalized: it depends on input container and codecs, audio layout, whether the visual is still or moving, installed encoder support, and the Pi model. Verify those details before building a long-running service; the encoder must produce a format YouTube accepts and maintain the selected keyframe interval and bitrate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Prepare the Pi. Install a supported operating system and the playback/encoding software you choose. Provide stable power, suitable cooling for the selected hardware and enclosure, and storage for the media files.
- Make a short test run. Launch the media pipeline with the intended audio, visual, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Confirm playback locally where practical and inspect encoder output for errors.
- Send a test to YouTube. Enter the broadcast endpoint and private stream key in the encoder. Use YouTube’s preview or testing flow before making the stream public, and confirm that audio and video arrive as expected.
- Check stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and correct dropped frames, bitrate instability, audio problems, or ingest errors before leaving the system unattended.
- Publish and monitor. Once the preview and settings are sound, start the live broadcast and keep a way to check the stream status remotely or in person.
Keep the stream running unattended
A 24/7 stream makes the Pi, power supply, router, internet service, encoder process, and YouTube ingest all part of the operating chain. The following are practical precautions, not a tested reliability recipe or an uptime guarantee.

- Prefer a wired network connection where practical, and check that the router and internet service can sustain the selected upload rate.
- Monitor the stream, encoder logs, and available storage. Keep the stream key out of logs and restrict access to it.
- Plan maintenance and a recovery path for power loss, router or ISP interruption, encoder failure, storage problems, and YouTube-side ingest interruptions.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video or reports an ingest problem | Endpoint, stream key, network, or encoder output | Confirm the endpoint matches the current broadcast, recheck the private key, verify the RTMPS configuration and network connectivity, then inspect encoder logs. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or distorted | Input selection, audio layout, or encoder settings | Check the selected audio source and channel layout, then test the encoded output and YouTube preview before publishing. |
| Stream health is unstable or frames drop | Upload capacity, bitrate, Pi load, or connection stability | Reduce resolution or bitrate, leave more upload headroom, and check the Pi’s workload and wired connection where available. |
| The stream stops after a reboot or encoder crash | Startup and process recovery configuration | Verify the service starts on boot and restarts after failure; test recovery deliberately and confirm YouTube receives the restarted feed. |
| Audio clicks or ambience jumps at the loop point | Source edit and loop boundary | Re-edit the join, smooth abrupt level changes, and listen to repeated transitions before going live again. |
| Stream key appears in a script, screenshot, or log | Credential exposure | Replace or reset the exposed key in YouTube and update the encoder configuration; protect the new key from logs and public files. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Raspberry Pi, home computer, or home internet connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video running as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
