You can rotate videos stored in Google Drive during a YouTube livestream by using an Indian VPS as the playback and encoding machine: sync authorized video files from Drive to the VPS, prepare a playlist in a deterministic order, and have an encoder send that playlist to YouTube. Drive stores the source files; the VPS plays them; YouTube receives the live feed and hosts the viewer-facing broadcast. The VPS does not make Drive into a live playlist player.
How the Drive-to-YouTube setup works
There are three separate jobs in this system:
- Google Drive: stores source video files and lets an authorized VPS-side process download them.
- The VPS: keeps prepared copies locally, determines their playback order, and runs the encoder continuously.
- YouTube: receives the encoder’s audio/video feed and presents a live broadcast to viewers.
YouTube distinguishes the viewer-facing event, called a liveBroadcast, from the incoming feed, called a liveStream. As Google for Developers explains in its YouTube Live Streaming API guide, “A broadcast represents an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” A stream carries the audio/video content and its streaming settings. The playlist rotation belongs on the VPS; YouTube’s API is not a Drive playlist player.
Prepare YouTube before configuring the VPS
Create the live event and obtain its ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live broadcast you intend to use. Follow the current instructions in the channel’s live control room for setting up the event and getting its stream’s ingestion details.
- Copy the ingest address and stream key into the encoder configuration on the VPS. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, shared Drive file, screenshot, or unprotected log.
- Choose an ingestion protocol and encoder settings that YouTube currently shows for your channel and input. YouTube supports RTMP and HLS ingestion, but there is no single protocol or configuration established here as best for every account and source playlist.
- Start with one broadcast and one stream. The Live Streaming API can automate broadcast creation, binding, scheduling, and lifecycle changes, but it is optional for a basic setup; YouTube Studio can handle those control-plane steps while the VPS handles playback.
The YouTube API guide describes reusing one stream configuration for multiple events, with up to three broadcasts bound to a stream in its resource model. Use a separate stream when shows need different stream settings. If you automate event setup, the API requires a Google Cloud project/API configuration and authorization by the Google account that owns the broadcasting channel.

Make Drive files available safely to the VPS
Use downloadable video files and authorized access
This workflow is for actual video files in Drive, not Docs, Sheets, or Slides files treated as ordinary media. Google’s Drive API documentation describes downloading binary files with files.get and alt=media; supported files may also use the long-running files.download route. Workspace documents have separate export methods and their own constraints. Before downloading, check that the file is accessible to the authorized account and that capabilities.canDownload permits it.

Authorize the VPS-side sync process with an OAuth scope that permits reading the intended file contents while granting no broader access than the implementation needs. Avoid making the source folder public merely to simplify syncing. Keep OAuth refresh credentials protected just like the YouTube stream key.
Sync first, then play local files
- Choose the Drive folder containing only the intended source videos, or maintain a manifest that explicitly lists the files to use.
- Enumerate files through the authorized sync process and assign a stable order. A manifest is more reliable than assuming a folder’s returned file order will remain the intended playlist order.
- Download each file before it is due to play. Verify that the transfer completed and that the local file can be opened before adding it to the active playlist.
- Have the encoder read only prepared local files. Do not make playback depend on downloading the next file from Drive at the moment it is needed.
- Stage changed files and a new manifest separately. Switch the active playlist at a controlled boundary after the new files are complete, rather than rewriting the list while the encoder is reading it.
- Log download failures and encoder exit status. Configure a process supervisor to restart the encoder when it exits, and set up an alert so a repeated failure is not mistaken for a healthy 24/7 stream.
This staging approach is recommended implementation guidance, not a guarantee against every network, storage, or encoder failure. Test the complete playlist on your own VPS before relying on unattended operation.
Configure playlist rotation and the encoder
Choose a playback method that matches your files
A common FFmpeg approach is to create a concat-demuxer manifest whose entries point to local files, then read that manifest in real time and loop the input. A simplified command shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/live/playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is a template, not a verified command for every YouTube endpoint or playlist. Use it only when the ingest address shown in your live control room is compatible with the selected FFmpeg output format. Keep the actual key out of the manifest and source repository; environment variables can still be exposed to privileged users or process inspection, so protect the VPS account and service configuration accordingly.
Stream-copy concatenation is suitable only when the clips’ streams are compatible enough to join: codecs, frame size, frame rate, time base, and audio layout can all matter. If they differ, normalize them before streaming or use a playback pipeline that decodes and re-encodes as needed. That can increase sustained CPU demand. Validate transitions and audio on a sample playlist, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health feedback before treating the system as unattended.
Keep source playlists distinct from HLS playlists
Your Drive manifest is a list of source videos for the VPS to play. An HLS media playlist, by contrast, describes media segments sent to an HLS ingest destination and has its own media-format, HTTPS, segment, and filename requirements. These are different playlist layers; changing the order of Drive files does not itself create a valid HLS ingest stream.

Keep the event and playback control planes separate
The encoder is responsible for which media plays and when the playlist repeats or changes. YouTube Studio or the Live Streaming API manages the broadcast event and its binding to an incoming stream. Separating those roles makes it easier to change a playlist without unnecessarily recreating the event, or to schedule a new broadcast without changing the VPS’s media library.
Size an Indian VPS without guessing at a “low-cost” plan
No current Indian VPS provider price or plan figure is established here, and a small instance should not be assumed to encode a particular resolution. Compare candidate plans using the workload and contract details that matter for your channel:
| Cost or capacity factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Monthly server price | The recurring charge for the selected region and plan, plus applicable tax and currency treatment. |
| Network route and region | Whether the provider offers an India region and how its route performs to the YouTube ingest destination you will use. |
| Sustained encoding capacity | CPU architecture and sustained CPU availability; whether hardware encoding is available and suitable for your encoder. |
| Outbound transfer | Included transfer, the provider’s accounting period, and egress overage rates. Continuous upload can make this more important than the headline server price. |
| Storage and persistence | Local disk capacity for the prepared files, whether the disk persists through restarts or plan changes, and any separate backup cost. |
| Reliability and support | Backup policy, recovery options, support scope, and whether you can monitor the process and host remotely. |
Estimate outbound data from your bitrate
For a constant outgoing bitrate of B megabits per second, the stream transfers approximately B × 10.8 decimal GB per day, before protocol overhead. This is a calculation, not a VPS-provider statistic. For example, 2 Mbps is about 21.6 GB per day, or 648 GB over a 30-day month before overhead. Calculate using the bitrate you actually plan to send, then compare that estimate with each provider’s included outbound allowance and overage terms.

Budget for encoding and storage separately
If the VPS only remuxes compatible files, its CPU workload differs from a setup that decodes and re-encodes every clip. Measure sustained load with the real playlist and target output settings before choosing a smaller plan. For disk, total the size of all locally staged media plus space needed for downloads in progress, logs, and any backup or rollback copy. Neither resolution capacity nor reliable transfer volume follows from a VPS’s advertised price alone.
Google Cloud’s managed Live Stream API is a different kind of option, not simply a cheap VPS: Google bills it by active channel time, with rates varying by input/output resolution and configuration. Check its current pricing and configuration terms directly before comparing costs with a VPS.

Check copyright, Drive terms, and monetization separately
Use only videos the channel owner has permission to broadcast. Google’s Drive API Terms of Service say that API use is not allowed for “Broad video distribution or dissemination of copyrighted content without authorization” and that “Using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN) is not allowed.” Downloading an owner’s working files to one VPS for that owner’s authorized stream differs in purpose and scale from using Drive as a public CDN, but assess the actual workflow against Google’s current terms.

A technically successful stream does not establish that a channel or its videos are eligible for monetization. Check YouTube’s current channel monetization policies and copyright requirements for your specific content; do not assume that continuous looping alone makes a stream eligible.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The encoder cannot download a Drive file: confirm the authorized account can access it, check
capabilities.canDownload, verify the OAuth authorization permits content access, and distinguish a binary video from a Workspace document that needs an export route. - The playlist stops at a clip boundary: check whether the clips have compatible stream parameters for the selected concat method. Test the problematic transition and normalize or re-encode incompatible media.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: compare the endpoint and protocol with the current live control room instructions, verify that the event is ready, and check for a missing, stale, or incorrectly protected stream key.
- The stream drops after running for a while: inspect encoder exit status, VPS resource pressure, network interruptions, and YouTube stream-health feedback. Use a supervisor and alerting, but investigate recurring failures rather than relying only on restarts.
- New Drive videos do not appear in rotation: confirm the sync process discovered and fully downloaded the files, update the manifest, and activate the staged playlist at a controlled boundary.
- The VPS bill is higher than expected: compare actual outbound transfer with your bitrate-based estimate and review the plan’s egress allowance, overage rates, and storage or backup charges.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than managing a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo runs the playback from the cloud. The setup is three steps:
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream continues with your computer off. Every slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account; after that, monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free StreamNeo day.
