You can switch genres without ending a YouTube live stream by keeping the encoder’s connection to YouTube running and changing the media playing upstream—in OBS or another encoder workflow. YouTube receives the encoder’s outgoing audio and video; the playlist that supplies that content is managed separately. Playlist edits are not guaranteed to be gapless, so rehearse the switch before relying on it in a public broadcast.
How playlist rotation works
Think of the setup as two separate parts:
- The live transmission: your encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using a server URL and stream key.
- The media source: a file, playlist, or scene arrangement in the encoder determines what viewers see and hear.
YouTube’s setup guidance treats the encoder as the source of the transmission: start sending content from the encoder to begin, and stop sending content to end. The Google for Developers Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes a stream—the audio-video transmission—from its associated broadcast. The practical consequence is to leave the encoder’s YouTube output active during a genre change and change the source feeding it instead. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance
A genre schedule or rotation policy is something you configure in your media workflow; it is not a YouTube Live Control Room playlist feature. Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API
Choose a media workflow
One VLC Video source with a playlist
OBS documents its VLC Video source as a way to play a list of files. It supports looping and shuffling the playlist and requires VLC to be installed. This can suit a single genre list or a collection that you update between programming blocks. OBS’s documentation describes the source controls, but does not guarantee how every live edit will affect playback position or transitions. OBS: VLC Video Source

Separate sources or scenes for each genre
For clearer manual control, organize genre-specific media into separate sources or scenes in OBS, then select the intended source when you want to change genres. This keeps the editorial organization visible, but the behavior of a source when hidden, restarted, or updated depends on its settings and your OBS installation. Validate the result rather than assuming it will resume at a particular point.
Choose based on whether you need a simple ordered or shuffled list, distinct genre blocks, manual or timed changes, and a way to monitor or recover if a file ends or a source fails. OBS documents playlist loop and shuffle controls; do not assume those controls provide a timed genre scheduler.

Set up and test the rotation
- Prepare the media. Sort files into genre-specific lists or arrange them in separate OBS sources/scenes. Confirm that the files play with the expected picture and audio in your actual setup.
- Configure the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source for a playlist, install VLC if needed, and set Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist according to your intended order. Alternatively, use individual media sources organized by genre.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and stream key. Enter YouTube’s server URL and the stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Follow the current Control Room labels, which may change.
- Start the encoder output. Start streaming from OBS and check its outgoing preview and YouTube’s stream status before treating the broadcast as live. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to send the content.
- Rehearse the genre change. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal. While OBS continues sending to YouTube, change the upstream source or playlist as planned. Watch and listen to the outgoing feed and confirm that the YouTube connection remains active.
- Keep a fallback ready. Have a known-good scene or media item available as an operational precaution. If the selected source ends or behaves unexpectedly, switch to the fallback without stopping the encoder output.
Test the exact kind of edit you intend to make while live. The cited YouTube and OBS documentation does not promise that edits preserve the current playback cursor or create seamless, gapless transitions. Nor does it document every plugin, source reset, or third-party automation behavior.

Keep the broadcast and archive expectations separate
YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That duration rule does not establish a universal archive workflow for a continuous 24/7 schedule. Common problems and what to check
- The live stream ends during a genre change: check whether the encoder output was stopped or disconnected. A media change should happen in the upstream source workflow; confirm the encoder remains connected and sending.
- The next genre does not play: check the selected source, playlist contents, and VLC installation if using OBS’s VLC Video source. Test the same files locally in the configured source.
- The change is not seamless: treat that as a transition limitation, not proof the YouTube broadcast must be restarted. The cited documentation does not guarantee gapless playlist edits; rehearse and choose a transition approach that works in your installation.
- The stream looks or sounds wrong after switching: inspect the outgoing preview and audio meters, then verify the selected source and media. The documentation does not certify arbitrary file compatibility, normalization, or transition quality.
- You expected YouTube to rotate genres: YouTube receives the encoder’s output; playlist selection and genre scheduling belong in the encoder or a separate automation workflow.
- You are looking at HLS playlist guidance: YouTube’s HLS documentation concerns protocol-level delivery of live segments, not a viewer-facing genre scheduler. It describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP and specifies a rolling ingestion playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Google for Developers: HLS ingestion
