To rotate videos in a YouTube livestream, add an OBS Studio VLC Video source, load your files into its playlist, and choose whether the list should loop or shuffle. OBS encodes the scene and sends it to YouTube Live; VLC playlist rules control playback order and repetition, not the YouTube connection.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio to display and encode the playlist.
- VLC media player installed on the same computer. OBS says VLC is required for its VLC Video source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Video files you have the right to use and a YouTube channel enabled for livestreaming.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
The exact OBS and YouTube labels described below reflect their official documentation reviewed on October 3, 2026. Labels and workflows can change.
Add the videos to an OBS VLC playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC, matching their architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source is not available.
- In OBS, select the scene that will show the videos. In the Sources panel, choose + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the sequence you want if you plan to play them in order, then confirm the source settings.
- Check the source in the OBS preview. If necessary, resize or position it within the scene so the video fits the stream layout.
OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and supports multiple playlist items. Its playback controls govern the playlist inside OBS; they do not start or schedule the YouTube broadcast.
Choose the playlist rules: order and end behavior

OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off. Check the actual source properties rather than relying on defaults, especially if the scene or source was previously configured.

Looping the list is not repeating one video
Looping the playlist repeats the full list at its end. VLC’s reference distinguishes this from repeating the current item, which repeats just the video currently playing. Do not treat those options as interchangeable: use the full-list loop for a rotating playlist and a current-item repeat only when you want one video to keep playing.
Set what happens when the source is hidden
OBS’s Visibility Behaviour setting controls whether the VLC source continues, pauses, or stops when it is not visible. The documented default is to stop when hidden and restart when visible. That can matter if you switch scenes: the playlist may stop or restart when its source is no longer visible.
- Open the VLC Video source properties and review Visibility Behaviour.
- If the playlist must continue across a scene change, choose a behavior intended to keep playback running while hidden.
- Switch scenes during a rehearsal and verify that the video behaves as intended when you return to the playlist scene.
There is no single documented setting guaranteed to suit every production. Also confirm that the scene containing the VLC Video source remains the active output scene whenever you expect its video to appear.

- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share or publish it.
- Start streaming from OBS to send the scene, including the VLC playlist, to YouTube.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then click Go live as required by YouTube’s workflow.
- When finished, stop sending content from OBS and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a YouTube workflow threshold, not a promise that a stream will remain available indefinitely; check the current Live Control Room instructions for the stream you are running.

Rehearse and check playback before a public stream
- Play every file in the playlist, not just the first item, and confirm the intended order.
- Check what happens at the end of the list with Loop Playlist both as configured and during a full cycle if practical.
- Verify the stream preview, video framing, scene changes, and hidden-source behavior.
- Confirm that the YouTube stream is receiving the OBS encoder feed before the public launch.
Official documentation does not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted playback for every file format, file, and computer configuration. Rehearse with the actual media and settings you plan to use; do not assume one successful clip proves the whole playlist will behave identically.
Troubleshooting VLC playlist playback
VLC Video does not appear in OBS Sources
Install VLC, then check that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation and check the source list again.

The playlist stops or starts over after a scene switch
Inspect Visibility Behaviour on the VLC Video source. The documented default stops a hidden source and restarts it when visible. Choose a behavior suitable for your scene workflow and rehearse switching away and back.

Turn Shuffle Playlist off for listed order, then check the order of the files in the playlist. With shuffle on, playback is randomized rather than following the list.

The playlist ends instead of starting over
Enable Loop Playlist if you want the full list to restart when it runs out of media files. This is separate from repeating only the current item.
Network media buffers or starts slowly
If media is being reached over a network, OBS exposes a network-caching setting. OBS lists 400 ms as its default; that is a documented control default, not a guaranteed fix or a recommendation for every connection. Check the source and network conditions, then rehearse with the files and connection you will use.
YouTube does not show the encoder preview or go live
Confirm that OBS is sending the scene and that its stream settings contain the server URL and key for the selected stream in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow waits for the encoder preview before you click Go live.
