To change videos without restarting a 24/7 YouTube live stream, switch the active source in the software or hardware encoder sending the feed. Keep the encoder connected to YouTube; do not use its stop control or YouTube’s End Stream control for a content-only change. YouTube receives the encoder’s program feed, so the source change happens in the encoder or playout system—not in the YouTube event itself. Rehearse and monitor the switch: seamless playback depends on your particular setup.
How to switch videos while the stream stays live
- Identify the encoder sending your stream. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. The encoder uses YouTube’s server URL and stream key to send the live feed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Prepare the replacement video. Add it as a source, scene, or item in the encoder or playout system before switching. The exact controls vary by product and version; consult that product’s current instructions rather than assuming YouTube has a universal video-rotation command.
- Switch the active program output inside the encoder. Use the encoder’s source or playout controls, and leave its YouTube connection running. Do not press Stop Streaming or End Stream when you only want to change the video.
- Verify picture and sound. Check the outgoing program in the encoder and the YouTube preview. Confirm the replacement video is visible and the intended audio is audible.
- Rehearse before relying on unattended playback. Test the transition on your own configuration and watch for gaps, black frames, frozen video, or missing audio. The general encoder workflow does not guarantee every source change will be seamless.
YouTube documents using an encoder to send a feed and stopping that feed when ending a stream. The recommendation to change sources in the encoder follows from that architecture; YouTube does not document one universal Studio control for swapping media inside every third-party encoder. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
What to avoid when changing the program
- Do not stop the encoder output for a content-only change. Stopping the feed is part of ending the stream, not a source-switch instruction.
- Do not select End Stream in Live Control Room. YouTube documents it as an end control, including in its scheduled-stream flow.
- Do not assume a preview proves the whole chain is healthy. Check both the encoder’s outgoing program and YouTube’s preview, including audio.
- Protect the stream key. It allows the encoder to send a feed to your stream. If you reset it, update the encoder with the new key. YouTube explains stream keys and stream settings in its settings guide.
Choosing a method for frequent video changes
If you only need an occasional change, use the encoder already sending the stream. For frequent, unattended rotation across prerecorded videos, compare options by whether they support editing a playlist while live, scheduling, monitoring and alerts, recovery after a connection loss, local or cloud operation, and total cost. These are evaluation criteria, not guarantees about any particular tool.

| Option | What it can help with | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Existing encoder or playout system | Changing the source without adding equipment | Controls and continuity vary by product and configuration; rehearse the switch. |
| Programmable controller | Triggering live-production shortcuts such as scene changes | YouTube lists Elgato Stream Deck as a programmable USB controller; it is optional, not required for a basic source change. YouTube’s encoder guide |
| Cloud playout | Continuous prerecorded-video playback without relying on a home computer to send the feed | YouTube’s encoder guide describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Check a provider’s current features, terms, and price before choosing. |
For a simple source change, a controller or cloud service is not necessary. They may be worth considering when you need repeated hands-off playback or playlist management.
