To make a Samsung Galaxy screen follow how you hold the device, open Quick settings and tap Portrait or Landscape until the control changes to Auto rotate. If the screen is locked in the wrong orientation, that same control is usually the fix.
Turn automatic screen rotation on

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick settings. On some newer layouts, including Samsung’s US Galaxy S25 Ultra example, you may need to swipe down from the top-right. The gesture and panel arrangement can vary by device and software version.

Find the orientation tile. If it says Portrait or Landscape, rotation is locked. Tap it so it reads Auto rotate.

Close Quick settings, then turn the device upright or sideways. The screen should follow the way you hold it where the app or screen supports that orientation.

Samsung’s Galaxy screen rotation guide describes Auto rotate as adjusting orientation to match how the device is held. Its instructions are for the US support site; exact controls can differ by model, software version, and region.
Lock the screen in portrait or landscape
Auto rotate can be turned off while preserving the orientation you want:

With Auto rotate on, hold the phone or tablet in the desired position.

Open Quick settings and tap Auto rotate. The tile changes to Portrait or Landscape, locking the current orientation.
To resume automatic rotation, tap the Portrait or Landscape tile so it returns to Auto rotate.
Restore Auto rotate if its Quick settings tile is missing
The rotation control may have been removed from the Quick settings panel. On the US support page, Samsung’s steps are:

Open Quick settings and tap the pencil-shaped Edit icon.

Select Auto rotate from the available controls.

Tap Done to save the panel layout.
Tile names, icons, and editing steps may vary across Galaxy versions. If the panel has separate edit areas, look through the available tiles for Auto rotate.
Make the Home screen rotate
On Galaxy phones, the Home screen does not rotate by default. To enable it, touch and hold the Auto rotate tile to open its options, then turn on the Home screen switch. Samsung says this option is unavailable on tablets.

On devices running One UI 6.1, Samsung also identifies Lock screen and Voice call screen switches in the Auto rotate options. Those settings control those specific screens; their availability depends on the device and software.
Keep the screen steady while turning the device
If Auto rotate is on but you want to turn the device without the display changing orientation, keep a finger on the screen as you turn it. Samsung says the display stays in its original orientation while your finger remains there; release it to allow rotation. This can help when repositioning a device while reading.

Portrait or Landscape lock is active
Check the Quick settings tile first. If it shows Portrait or Landscape, tap it to switch back to Auto rotate.

The app or screen does not support the orientation
Rotation support is not universal. Samsung Support notes, “Some apps may not be capable of rotation and will still open in Portrait or Landscape mode.” This is Samsung’s support guidance, not a compatibility test of every app. If other supported screens rotate but one app does not, the app may be designed for only one orientation.
You are expecting an upside-down view
Many screens do not support upside-down rotation, so Auto rotate does not guarantee that every screen will turn through all four device positions.
The control is missing from the panel
Restore Auto rotate through the Quick settings Edit control, then check whether the tile is set to Auto rotate rather than a portrait or landscape lock.
