To rotate recorded lectures by subject in a 24/7 YouTube stream, create a separate playlist for each subject and play the selected list through an encoder such as OBS. OBS can loop and shuffle a playlist, but its documented controls do not provide automatic time-of-day switching between different subject playlists. Choose how subjects should rotate
First decide whether “rotate” means repeating one subject playlist at a time or automatically changing subjects on a timetable. The documented OBS VLC Video source supports a playlist, looping and shuffling. The OBS and YouTube documentation cited here does not establish a built-in clock-based scheduler that switches between subject playlists at set hours.
Repeat one subject playlist
Make a playlist for each subject, such as mathematics, history or biology. Load the playlist you want to broadcast, then choose an ordered loop or a shuffled loop. To change the subject, an operator must select another playlist or use a separately validated scheduling method; do not assume OBS will switch lists at a specified hour by itself.
Use a deliberate teaching sequence or shuffle
- Ordered loop: Keep shuffle off and loop on when learners should encounter the lectures in a planned sequence.
- Shuffled loop: Enable shuffle when randomized repetition is suitable. Preview the resulting sequence to make sure it remains useful for learners.
Prepare the lecture files and playlists
- Sort recordings by subject. Put the lecture files for each subject into their own clearly named group. This is an organization step for your operation; it is not a YouTube feature that categorizes local files.
- Check every file. Play each recording before adding it to the broadcast list. Confirm that both picture and audio work, and that the file is the intended lesson.
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS documents that source as supporting multiple media files, with separate controls for looping and shuffle. See OBS Media Sources.
- Create a source for the playlist in OBS. Add a VLC Video source, select the files for one subject, and give the source or scene a subject-specific name so the operator can identify it.
- Set playback behavior. Turn loop on to repeat the playlist. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence, or turn it on for randomized playback. Check the source in OBS before broadcasting.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
YouTube Live receives a continuous program from an encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts and sends the stream. For OBS, create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio, then connect OBS using the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.

- Check channel eligibility. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned start time.
- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Scheduling creates a page viewers can share and lets them set reminders. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup flow at YouTube encoder setup.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Use the values associated with the intended YouTube broadcast. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Start sending the encoder feed and inspect the preview. Before the public go-live step for a scheduled event, confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the intended video and audio.
- Complete the Live Control Room go-live step when applicable. For a scheduled broadcast, connect the encoder and start sending before the event, then follow the Live Control Room’s on-screen instruction to go live.
Run and monitor the stream
A loop setting repeats a playlist; it does not guarantee 24/7 uptime. OBS running on a local computer depends on that computer, its power and its network connection, as well as the media files remaining available. Assign an operator to watch stream health and respond if playback or the connection stops.
- Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor audio and video quality continuously. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend monitoring both.
- Confirm the active playlist contains only the intended subject’s lectures, especially after switching scenes or playlists.
- Keep a recovery plan for a failed file, a dropped encoder connection, a power loss or an internet interruption.
Plan the subject schedule and archives separately
If subjects need to change at particular times, make the timetable an explicit operating task. The documented playlist controls establish looping and shuffle, not timed switching between subject lists. An operator can change playlists manually; any automated scheduler or alternative tool should be validated for the exact switching behavior required before relying on it for a continuous channel.

Plan recordings and archives as a separate concern. The cited YouTube encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete video. Do not rely on a 24-hour broadcast becoming one complete archive. If complete lecture archives matter, define and test a separate recording or archive workflow.
Common problems and fixes
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the available sources.
- The playlist does not repeat: Check that loop is enabled on the VLC Video source. Looping the playlist is distinct from shuffling its order.
- Lectures play in an unexpected order: Turn shuffle off for a planned sequence, or review the playlist contents and preview playback when shuffle is intended.
- YouTube receives no encoder feed: Confirm that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the correct YouTube broadcast, and that the encoder has started sending. Check the Live Control Room for its current connection status.
- The scheduled event is not public: Starting the encoder feed may not be the final step. Follow the Live Control Room’s go-live prompt for the scheduled stream.
- The stream stops overnight: A playlist loop does not protect against computer shutdown, power or network failure, or encoder interruption. Check those dependencies and assign someone to monitor recovery, or consider a cloud service.
- A long stream is not one complete archive: YouTube’s cited automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Arrange separate archiving for a longer run.
