To rotate a browser’s proxy automatically, configure the browser to use a proxy endpoint or use a proxy service that changes the exit address behind a configured endpoint. Browser settings route traffic; they do not provide a pool of proxy addresses. You can choose routes with an extension or a PAC script, or let a provider manage rotation. Which approach works depends on whether you need browser-only routing, URL-based rules, or a persistent address for a multi-step session.
What browser proxy rotation does—and does not do
A proxy is an intermediary for network traffic. The browser sends supported requests through a configured proxy, which then connects onward. Rotation means the outward-facing address changes, but the browser can’t create those addresses: it needs access to one or more proxy endpoints, or to a service that changes the exit address behind one endpoint.
There are three distinct arrangements:
- Browser-selected endpoints: An extension or browser configuration chooses among proxy routes. You manage the available endpoints and the rule for choosing them.
- PAC-based routing: A Proxy Auto-Config (PAC) script selects whether supported requests go direct or through a configured proxy, often based on the URL or host. That choice is not, by itself, a schedule for changing an IP.
- Provider-managed rotation: The browser uses a configured endpoint while a provider controls the exit-address changes. Rotation frequency and session behavior depend on that provider; they are not universal browser features.
Keep rotation within authorized testing, network administration, or privacy use. It is a routing technique, not a way to bypass a site’s access controls, and it does not guarantee anonymity.
Choose the approach that fits your job

No provider-specific rotation schedule, sticky-session feature, location coverage, price, or reliability is established here. Verify those details with the service you choose instead of assuming that every rotating endpoint offers the same controls.
Set up a browser-level proxy
Chrome: extension-managed rules
Chrome extensions can use the chrome.proxy API to configure proxy settings. The extension must declare the proxy permission in its manifest. Chrome’s documented modes include direct, auto_detect, pac_script, fixed_servers, and system. Fixed-server rules can route traffic by protocol, include a fallback proxy, and specify bypass destinations.

- Obtain the proxy endpoint details from the service or administrator providing them. Confirm the required scheme and any authentication requirements.
- Use a trusted extension that supports Chrome’s proxy API, or have an extension developer implement the desired rules. Review why it needs the
proxypermission and how it handles credentials and browsing data. - Choose the routing model: fixed servers for configured proxy rules, or a PAC script when route selection depends on a URL or host.
- Configure bypass destinations only when you intend those destinations to connect directly. A bypass can make some traffic leave by a different route than the rest.
- Test an ordinary browser window, then check the effective proxy configuration and observed egress address. If the configuration differs from what you set, check for another extension or policy controlling proxy settings.
An extension that switches among several configured endpoints is not the same thing as a provider that rotates behind one endpoint. Decide which component owns the change and verify how it behaves before using it in a multi-step workflow.
Chrome: use a PAC script for route selection
A PAC file is JavaScript containing a FindProxyForURL function. The browser calls the function to obtain a routing decision for a supported request. For example, a basic script can send one host through a proxy and leave other hosts direct:

A PAC script can choose among routes according to its rules, but the endpoint’s exit-address behavior remains separate. Confirm that the browser is using the intended PAC configuration and test both a matching host and a non-matching host.
Firefox: use its WebExtensions proxy settings
Firefox has its own WebExtensions proxy APIs and settings; do not assume Chrome extension code or permissions transfer unchanged. Its proxy settings support manual or automatic configuration and fields for HTTP, SOCKS, TLS proxy, bypass hosts, and whether SOCKS DNS is proxied.

Changing Firefox proxy settings affects regular and private windows. An extension therefore needs private-browsing access for its proxy configuration to apply there, and the user controls whether to grant that access. Check the extension’s requested access and test the browser windows where you intend to use it.
Managed ChromeOS: check policy precedence
On managed ChromeOS, proxy configuration may come from user policy, extensions, per-network user policy, device policy, or the settings UI, with an explicit precedence order. An extension-set proxy is disabled in Incognito by default unless the user allows the extension there. The effective route may therefore differ from the one selected in an extension or settings screen.

Browser traffic and system services can also differ in authentication capabilities. If you administer a device, check the applicable management policy and test the traffic and services that matter; a browser setting should not be assumed to cover the entire operating system.

Proxy schemes are not interchangeable. The scheme affects the connection to the proxy, name resolution, authentication, and which traffic can be proxied. Choose based on the browser and endpoint capabilities you have actually confirmed.

- Connection security: Communication with an HTTP proxy is insecure to the proxy. For an HTTPS destination, a CONNECT tunnel preserves end-to-end TLS to the destination, but the destination hostname is sent to the proxy in clear text during tunnel setup. An HTTPS proxy uses TLS to protect the connection between browser and proxy.
- DNS resolution: Chrome SOCKS5 resolves names on the proxy side. Firefox exposes a setting for whether SOCKS DNS is proxied. If DNS location matters to your task, check the browser’s setting and test it rather than inferring DNS behavior from the apparent exit IP alone.
- Authentication: Confirm which authentication method your endpoint requires and whether the browser, extension, or system service supports it. Support can differ between browser traffic and system services.
- Bypasses: Chrome and Firefox support bypass configuration, but details differ. A bypassed host will not follow the proxy route you may expect; review the list and test relevant destinations.
- Scope: Browser proxy APIs configure browser traffic, not necessarily other applications or operating-system services. Use an appropriate system-level configuration if your requirement extends beyond the browser.
A proxy changes routing; it does not by itself prevent browser-level identification or guarantee privacy. Do not treat an observed change in egress address as proof that every request, DNS lookup, or application uses the same route.

- Record the intended configuration. Note the endpoint, scheme, routing rules, bypasses, and whether the exit address is supposed to change on each request, on a new session, or under another provider-defined condition.
- Check the effective browser setting. In Chrome, inspect the effective proxy configuration and look for another extension or policy that may override it. On managed ChromeOS, check the applicable policy layer. In Firefox, confirm the proxy settings and any extension access needed for private windows.
- Verify actual traffic. Test the browser traffic and observed egress address after applying the change. Test routes that should use the proxy and hosts that should bypass it. Check DNS behavior separately where relevant.
- Test every relevant profile and window type. Private or Incognito windows can have separate extension-access conditions. A test in a regular window does not establish that a private window uses the same configuration.
- Test session behavior with the provider. For a login or multi-step workflow, establish whether the address remains stable for the duration required. Do not assume a rotation service offers sticky sessions or a particular rotation trigger.
Common symptoms and fixes
- The address never changes: Browser settings may only be routing to one endpoint, while the provider controls exit changes separately. Check the provider’s documented rotation trigger and verify that the endpoint is actually configured for the expected behavior.
- Some sites use the proxy and others do not: Review PAC rules and bypass destinations. Test a matching and non-matching host to find whether the behavior is intentional.
- Your extension setting has no effect: Another extension or an administrator’s policy may control the effective proxy configuration. Identify the winning configuration before changing more settings.
- Private browsing uses a different route: Check the extension’s private-window permission. Firefox requires user-granted private-browsing access for an extension’s proxy settings to affect private windows; ChromeOS Incognito has its own extension allowance behavior.
- Authentication fails or differs by service: Check the endpoint’s required authentication method and whether the browser or system service supports it. Browser and system traffic need not have identical authentication capabilities.
- DNS appears inconsistent with the exit address: Check the scheme and DNS settings—especially Chrome SOCKS5 resolution and Firefox’s SOCKS DNS option—and verify name resolution independently.
