You can use one YAML file to define when each YouTube livestream should change content, but YouTube does not read that file or switch the video feed for you. A controller must parse the schedule and tell a playout app—such as OBS—to change scenes or media sources. Each YouTube channel also needs its own authorized stream setup.
What the YAML schedule controls—and what it does not
Think of the system as three separate parts: a schedule, a playout controller, and YouTube destinations. YAML is the schedule and content manifest. Your controller interprets its entries and selects the appropriate scene or media source. The encoder sends the resulting audio and video to YouTube.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the watchable event, from a liveStream, which represents the incoming audio/video feed. The API can schedule a broadcast and manage its lifecycle, but that is not the same as scheduling which media your encoder plays. YouTube playlist resources are collections of YouTube videos; managing one does not select the feed being sent to a live event. Google documents the broadcast and stream resources and the separate playlist resource.

Choose a schedule format that can drive independent outputs
Use explicit output identifiers, time zones, transition times, and playout targets. For example, the following is an illustrative data model, not a validated configuration for a particular controller:

These fields are design choices, not YouTube API requirements. A production schedule should establish how long each entry runs or when it ends, whether entries recur, and what should play when no entry is active. Use a named time zone or an explicit UTC offset; do not leave the controller to guess whether a time is local or UTC.

- Output: identify the channel or encoder output the entry controls.
- Time: define the start and, where applicable, end or recurrence rule with an unambiguous time zone.
- Target: refer to a known OBS scene, source configuration, or other playout target.
- Fallback: specify what to do if a scheduled target cannot be loaded or the controller misses a transition.
Build the controller and playout layer
Validate the schedule before using it
Have the controller parse and reject invalid schedules before a stream starts. Check for unknown outputs or scenes, missing media paths, invalid time zones, malformed times, and overlapping entries where your design does not permit overlap. Log the parsed schedule and the next planned transition so an operator can confirm what the system intends to do.
Translate schedule entries into OBS actions
In OBS, organize each content block as a scene or source configuration, then use an automation layer to select it at the scheduled time. The Advanced Scene Switcher plugin supports date/time and media conditions and scene-switch actions. Its Macro Schedule tab can schedule actions for a given date and time, according to the plugin release notes. The OBS Project Forums listing reports a minimum OBS version of 31.1.1 and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; that listing was last updated 2026-08-07. Check the current plugin documentation and compatibility before installing.

This does not make a YAML file plug-and-play. Unless you verify a specific integration, a separate script or service must load the YAML, validate it, and translate its entries into actions the playout application understands.
Set up a separate YouTube destination for each channel
- Authorize the right account. The API request must be authorized by an account that owns the target channel. If channels are managed under different accounts, plan for separate authorization accordingly. See Google’s Live Streaming API overview.
- Create or identify the broadcast. A broadcast is the event viewers can watch. Set its event details and schedule using the broadcast workflow described in the LiveBroadcasts reference.
- Create or associate the incoming stream. A liveStream represents the encoder’s incoming feed. Follow Google’s broadcast and stream implementation workflow to associate the appropriate resources.
- Keep channel outputs distinct. Google’s documented common API pattern calls for a different stream for each channel. Do not assume a single stream resource can serve every channel. The exact output arrangement depends on your encoder and controller; the API documentation does not establish a maximum number of simultaneous outputs.
- Connect each output to its authorized destination. Store and manage credentials carefully, and make sure each encoder output is paired with the intended channel’s stream setup.
The API can create and manage YouTube broadcast events and playlist objects, but it does not replace the playout system that supplies changing audio and video. See the broadcast reference and the playlist reference.

Test transitions and plan for failures
This is an implementation pattern, not a tested turnkey recipe. Before relying on it, test each output and each transition in the environment you intend to run. Monitor outgoing feeds and keep a log of scheduled and actual transitions.

- Missed trigger: decide whether the controller should switch immediately to the current scheduled item, wait for the next entry, or alert an operator.
- OBS or controller restart: define how the schedule is reloaded and how the correct current item is selected after restart.
- Missing or unreadable media: use a deliberate fallback and log which item failed rather than silently assuming the scheduled content is playing.
- Expired authorization or destination issue: monitor each channel output and provide a way to identify which channel’s feed has stopped.
- Network interruption: test how the encoder and YouTube event behave after a disconnect, and decide who or what is responsible for restarting the feed.
The cited API and plugin sources do not establish gapless switching, automatic recovery from every failure, a supported number of concurrent outputs, or the capacity of a particular computer. Those depend on your full setup and should be tested rather than assumed.

Keep the YouTube content and channel rules in scope
Automation only changes what your encoder plays; it does not grant rights to the media or guarantee that a broadcast complies with YouTube’s rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every video and audio track, and review applicable YouTube policies before scheduling repeated or prerecorded content. A technically successful playlist rotation is not proof that the content is permitted.
