To rotate cartoons on a 24/7 channel, create named playlists for each intended program block, schedule those playlists in a recurring daily or weekly calendar (or use timed playlist-switch actions), and configure a fallback for any uncovered time. Before relying on the schedule, confirm the channel’s time zone and inspect the full week for gaps. Scheduling tools can automate playback, but they do not provide rights to the cartoons you stream.

Choose a daily rotation or a weekly lineup

Start by deciding whether the channel should follow the same pattern every day or use different programming on weekdays and weekends. A weekly calendar can assign videos, playlists, or compositions to recurring blocks; playout.video documents daily and weekly recurrence in its calendar guide. Exact controls vary by service, so check whether its recurrence settings support the pattern you want.

  • Same schedule every day: Set recurring daily blocks, such as a morning playlist, an afternoon playlist, and an evening playlist.
  • Different weekday and weekend schedules: Use separate recurring blocks or a weekly calendar if the selected service supports them.

These are organizational examples, not recommendations about what children should watch or when. A vendor’s children’s and family channel page offers daypart examples such as morning songs, afternoon learning, and a calm bedtime loop; those examples do not establish an ideal schedule or child-development guidance.

Prepare the playlists

  1. Name playlists for their job. Use clear labels such as “Morning Cartoons,” “Afternoon Cartoons,” and “Evening Cartoons,” or name them by weekday or theme.
  2. Add the intended videos. Check the order and confirm the playlist contains the material meant for that block.
  3. Choose how each playlist behaves. Decide whether it should loop, shuffle, or play once. Playlist features differ between services; playout.video describes loop, shuffle, and inline playlist concepts in its playlist guide.

A playlist’s runtime and playback behavior need to fit the scheduled block. If a block ends before its content does—or the content finishes before the next block begins—the resulting transition depends on the service’s scheduling and fallback rules.

Schedule the rotation

Option 1: Use weekly calendar blocks

A calendar is a good fit when you want to see the whole week and assign content to clock-time slots. In a supported service, add a playlist to a block, set its recurrence, and select loop or play-once behavior as needed. The playout.video calendar documentation describes scheduling videos, playlists, or compositions and choosing loop or play-once behavior; it is vendor documentation, not an independently validated workflow.

  1. Open the channel’s calendar or schedule view.
  2. Add a block at the intended start time and select the playlist for that daypart.
  3. Set the block’s recurrence, such as daily or on the relevant days of the week.
  4. Choose the content behavior, including loop or play once, if the service offers that control.
  5. Repeat for the remaining blocks until the intended schedule is covered.

Option 2: Schedule timed playlist switches

Some systems let you schedule an action that changes the active playlist at a particular time, including recurring actions expressed through a scheduler or cron expression. This can suit a channel that runs one main playlist and needs it changed at set times. playout.video documents scheduled playlist switches and distinguishes permanent switches from temporary inline playlists that return to the main playlist.

  • Use a permanent switch when the new playlist should become the ongoing main playlist.
  • Use a temporary or inline switch when the scheduled playlist should play and then return to the main playlist, if supported.

Before using timed actions, check how the service handles conflicting schedules, missed actions, and recurrence. Do not assume that an edit made during a live stream takes effect immediately; confirm the provider’s documented transition behavior.

Check time zones and prevent gaps

Confirm the time zone the channel schedule uses, then verify that each block appears at the intended local clock time. Frequency’s documentation says its schedule view uses the linear channel’s configured time zone. Other services may display or interpret times differently, so check the selected platform rather than assuming it follows your device’s clock.

A 24/7 schedule also needs a defined behavior when no scheduled content is available. Select a fallback playlist or standby video if the service supports one, and review the entire schedule for empty periods. Frequency documents gap warnings and a fallback loop for when nothing is scheduled; playout.video’s calendar documentation also describes fallback choices. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every scheduler handles gaps the same way.

Review the full week before relying on automation

  • Confirm every intended day and time has a block or an explicit fallback.
  • Check recurrence settings, especially for schedules that differ on weekdays and weekends.
  • Verify that each block points to the correct playlist and has the intended loop or play-once behavior.
  • Check the configured time zone against the local times you planned.
  • Review how edits, overlaps, and missed scheduled actions are handled by the provider.

Calendar blocks and timed playlist switches are two documented approaches, not a ranking of providers. Compare a scheduler’s recurrence options, playlist support, duration and loop controls, time-zone display, and fallback behavior before choosing one. The available vendor examples do not establish an independently validated best provider or service-level reliability guarantee.

Keep cartoon rights separate from scheduling

A scheduler controls when selected media plays; it does not establish that you have permission to broadcast that media. Rights depend on the actual cartoons, territories, and distribution method. Confirm that your rights cover the intended channel and audience before adding a title to a 24/7 rotation. The scheduling examples cited here do not determine licensing requirements for a particular catalog or platform.
