To rotate artwork while a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream continues, add OBS Studio’s Image Slide Show source to your scene, set it to change images automatically, and keep looping enabled. YouTube receives the finished video and audio from OBS; the slideshow itself is configured in OBS, not YouTube Studio.
Set up an automatic artwork slideshow in OBS
- Prepare your images. Keep the artwork files together if that makes the set easier to manage. OBS’s Image Slide Show source supports BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG, JPG, and GIF files. Use images you have permission to broadcast; having a copy of an image does not by itself establish streaming rights.
- Add the source. In your OBS scene, go to the Sources dock, select the plus button, and choose Image Slide Show. Add individual files or a directory.
- Set automatic timing. Set Slide Mode to automatic, choose Time Between Slides, and select a transition and transition speed. The time-between-slides value is how long each image is shown before the transition starts.
- Choose the order. Leave Loop on to restart the slideshow after its last image. Randomize Playback is off by default, so images play in file-list order; turn it on if you prefer a shuffled rotation.
- Fit the artwork to the scene. Check the OBS preview and resize or reposition the source as needed. OBS’s Sources Guide documents a fit-to-screen command.
- Test the complete broadcast. Before the long run, verify that the audio plays, the artwork changes as expected, and the stream is arriving properly. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health readout and messages during the broadcast.
OBS’s documented defaults are 8,000 milliseconds between slides, a 700-millisecond transition speed, Fade, Loop on, and Randomize Playback off. These are interface defaults, not ideal timings for every station. Transition speed is separate from the interval: it does not add extra time to it. For album art, a slower rotation may be a reasonable design choice, but it is not a YouTube requirement. OBS Image Slide Show Source documentation
Choose a fixed image or rotating artwork
| OBS source | Use it when | What to configure |
|---|---|---|
| Image | You want one fixed piece of artwork. | Add one image and position it in the scene. |
| Image Slide Show | You want multiple images to change automatically. | Add files or a directory, set automatic mode and interval, choose transition and order, and enable looping. |
The slideshow source is built into OBS; this method does not require a paid plugin or a physical rotation device. OBS Image Slide Show Source documentation
Keep the OBS feed compatible with YouTube Live
The artwork controls and the encoder settings solve different problems. OBS changes the scene visuals; YouTube’s encoder guidance concerns the audio/video feed it receives. YouTube recommends RTMPS, lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols, and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its live encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.

For one named example, YouTube’s guidance verified in 2026 gives H.264 1080p at 30 fps a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps. This is YouTube configuration guidance, not a measured performance result; check the current YouTube table before relying on a setting because encoder recommendations can change. YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream, using audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, and monitoring stream health while it runs. If the stream is not arriving smoothly, check YouTube Live Control Room’s health information rather than assuming the slideshow is at fault. Troubleshoot artwork and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The image never changes. | Slide Mode may not be automatic, or only one file may have been added. | Choose automatic mode and confirm the source contains multiple images or a directory with multiple supported files. |
| The slideshow stops at the last image. | Loop may be off. | Turn on Loop so the sequence restarts. |
| Images appear in an unexpected order. | Randomize Playback may be enabled, or the file-list order may not match your intended sequence. | Disable randomization for predictable file-list playback, or curate the list in the order you want. |
| Artwork is cropped, too small, or misplaced. | The source may not fit the scene dimensions or may be positioned incorrectly. | Adjust its scale and position in the OBS preview; use OBS’s fit-to-screen command if appropriate. |
| Viewers see a black screen, no audio, or a lagging feed. | The problem may be with the outgoing encoder feed rather than the artwork source. | Test the intended audio and video movement, inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages, and check the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. |
Run a 24/7 stream from your own computer or the cloud
DIY: keep OBS running on your computer
With a standard OBS setup, your own computer runs the scene and encoder that send the stream to YouTube. The Image Slide Show source handles artwork changes; it does not make the broadcast independent of the machine running OBS. A third-party 24/7 radio guide describes FFmpeg hosted on a VPS as another unattended infrastructure path, but that option is not necessary just to rotate images and does not establish uninterrupted service. 24/7 radio guide
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed. This is an alternative way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running; it is not the OBS slideshow method described above.

OBS and YouTube’s encoder documentation explain how to rotate and deliver images, but they do not determine whether you have rights to the music or artwork in a particular broadcast. Confirm that your intended use is permitted before streaming; neither owning a file nor using a slideshow source grants permission.
