In OBS, add an Image Slide Show source to your scene to rotate album-art images. This creates a timed or manually advanced slideshow; it does not automatically match each image to the song currently playing. For exact track-to-cover matching, you need a separate mechanism that detects track changes and updates the image.
Choose timed rotation or track-synchronized art
OBS’s built-in Image Slide Show source cycles through a set of images. Its automatic mode changes images at an interval you choose, while manual or hotkey operation lets an operator advance the image. Neither behavior, by itself, identifies the playing track or reads its album art. A timed change can therefore show the wrong cover if the track length and slideshow interval do not line up. OBS documents the slideshow controls, while its Media Sources documentation describes media playback separately.
| Approach | Operator involvement | Does it follow track boundaries? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic timed slideshow | Low after setup | No; it follows the timer, not the song | Ambient visual variety when exact cover matching is not essential |
| Manual or hotkey advancement | An operator advances the image at each track change | Only when someone keeps the image aligned with the playlist | Curated playlists with an operator present |
| Metadata-aware image updates | Can be hands-off if separately configured | Potentially, if it detects track changes and updates the image | Unattended streams that require the right cover for each track; the OBS documentation cited here does not verify a particular implementation |
Set up a rotating album-art slideshow in OBS
- Prepare the art files. Put the covers you want to use in a folder or select individual files. OBS lists support for BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, and GIF images. Keep the files in the intended playlist order if you plan to advance them manually.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene where your music stream is composed, add an Image Slide Show source. Load the image files or choose the directory containing them, then confirm that the covers appear in the preview.
- Choose how slides change. Select automatic operation for timer-based rotation, or manual/hotkey operation if an operator will change covers at track boundaries. Set the interval, transition, loop, and randomization options to suit the show. OBS documents defaults of 8,000 ms for the interval and 700 ms for transition speed; these are defaults, not recommended values for every stream.
- Check the composition. Preview the scene and confirm the image is visible and positioned as intended alongside the audio visual and any other overlays. If using manual changes, test advancing through the playlist in order.
- Test with the actual playback pattern. Run the music and visual setup long enough to check transitions and, for manual operation, confirm the operator can keep covers aligned with track changes. A timer alone cannot guarantee a match when tracks have different durations.
Keep the artwork aligned with the music
For a timed visual rotation
Set the slideshow interval for the pace you want viewers to see. Describe and treat the result as timed rotation: it changes on the configured schedule regardless of which track is playing. Randomization also changes which image appears, not its relationship to the current song.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Use manual or hotkey operation and keep the image sequence aligned with the playlist. An operator must advance the image when the track changes; this is not hands-off synchronization. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a media playlist and can loop or shuffle it, but the cited documentation does not establish a connection between the current playlist item and an Image Slide Show image.

For unattended exact matching
You need a separate metadata-aware mechanism that detects the current track and updates an OBS image or other visual source accordingly. The OBS documentation cited here does not verify a specific plugin or automated recipe, so check the behavior of any implementation before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. Confirm that it handles track changes, missing artwork, and the playlist’s actual playback order.
Configure and test YouTube ingestion separately
The artwork is part of the video scene your encoder sends; it does not replace YouTube’s live-stream requirements. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate, and keyframe guidance for your chosen stream configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and visual movement like the actual planned stream, then monitor stream health while live.

YouTube also supports HLS ingestion, but it requires an HLS-capable encoder and its specified playlist, segment, and transport configuration. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream. HLS is an ingestion choice, not a way to synchronize album art. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes reusing a live stream for recurring broadcasts and a 24/7 broadcast continuing without stopping the video feed. That concerns broadcast operation; it does not control OBS scenes or link a playlist track to its cover.

Check music and artwork rights before going live
Use music and cover art you have the rights or permissions to stream on YouTube. A 24/7 format does not change the need to comply with copyright rules, and displaying artwork does not grant permission to use either the image or the recording. Review the applicable rights for every track and image before building a long-running playlist.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The cover changes at the wrong time: The slideshow is following its timer, not the track. Use manual advancement at track boundaries or configure a separately verified metadata-aware update mechanism.
- The right art is shown for the wrong song: Check that image order matches playlist order and that manual advancement occurs at each track change. If playback is shuffled, a fixed image sequence will not reliably match it.
- Slides do not change: Check that the source has multiple images loaded and that automatic mode is enabled if you expect timer-based changes. For manual mode, use the configured manual or hotkey control.
- A cover is missing or unsupported: Confirm the file is present and in a format OBS lists as supported: BMP, TGA, PNG, JPEG/JPG, or GIF.
- The video looks correct locally but the YouTube stream has problems: Check YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health information independently of the slideshow. Test the actual audio and moving visuals before starting the broadcast.
