You can rotate a YouTube playlist according to the calendar day by running a scheduled job that uses the YouTube Data API to reconcile the playlist with the videos assigned to that day. First decide whether you mean changing the playlist’s contents or changing what viewers see in a live broadcast: those are separate tasks. Updating playlist membership does not switch the live program’s output.
Playlist rotation is not the same as live-output rotation
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos. A live broadcast is a separate event, bound to a stream that carries its feed. The YouTube Data API can add or remove playlist entries, but those playlist changes do not start or stop a broadcast or tell an encoder which video to play. - If you want the playlist itself to contain different videos each day, use the playlist-reconciliation method below.
- If you want the video currently being transmitted to change on a schedule, you also need a playout or encoder system that supports scheduled source rotation. A playlist update alone will not do it.
Plan the day-to-video mapping
Before writing the job, specify what “day” means and which videos belong to each date. Choose a time zone—such as the channel’s intended operating time zone—and run the job at the corresponding daily change time. A date near midnight can be a different calendar day in another time zone.
Choose a selection rule
- Repeating cycle: For a cycle of N video groups, use
index = (dayOfMonth - 1) % Nwith zero-based indexing. For example, if there are seven groups, days 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 select the same group. - Explicit calendar: Store a day-to-video or day-to-group table when specific dates need specific selections rather than a repeating cycle.
- Long months: State what should happen on the 29th, 30th, and 31st. A cycle naturally maps those days using the formula; an explicit calendar needs entries or a deliberate fallback for them.
Also decide whether the selected videos should remain in the playlist all day or change at a particular scheduled time. The mapping is your application logic; the API does not define it.

Update playlist membership with the YouTube Data API
The direct approach is a scheduled script that reads the target playlist, compares its current video IDs with the selection for the current date, and applies only the necessary additions and removals. Google documents the relevant operations in playlists.list, playlistItems.insert, and playlistItems.delete.
- Authorize the job. Use an authorized YouTube Data API client for the channel account that owns or can edit the playlist. Keep credentials secure and ensure authorization remains valid.
- Identify the target playlist. Use
playlists.listto find it or retrieve a known playlist, then save its playlist ID in the job’s configuration. - Read current items. Use
playlistItems.listfor the target playlist. Retain both each item’s playlist-item ID and its video resource ID. The video ID is useful for comparing membership; the playlist-item ID is required for deletion. - Compute the desired selection. Convert the current time to the configured time zone, determine the local calendar day, then apply your cycle or explicit mapping.
- Reconcile membership. Insert only desired videos that are missing, and delete only current items that are not desired. Do not delete and rebuild the entire playlist on every run.
- Set order only if needed. If a precise order matters, use the insert method’s position field and configure the playlist for Manual ordering first. The insert method can return
manualSortRequiredwhen the playlist is not set up for manual sorting. If exact order is not important, omit position. - Schedule and verify. Run the job at the chosen daily change time. Log the computed date, intended video IDs, API responses, and errors. Read the playlist again after writes to check that actual membership matches the selection.
Reconciliation logic

delete playlist itemMake runs safe to repeat: after the first successful update, a second run for the same date should find no membership changes to make. Avoid overlapping executions. Two jobs that read the playlist at the same time can each act on an outdated view; use a scheduler or lock to prevent concurrent runs, then verify with a fresh read.

Ordering, API limits, and failure handling
Required identifiers and common API failures
An insert request needs the playlist ID and video resource ID in its snippet. A delete request identifies the playlist-item ID—not just the video ID. Inserts can fail if the playlist does not support the operation, the video is unavailable, or the requested position is invalid. Handle errors before making further deletions; a partial failure should not leave the playlist empty or in an unintended state.
Quota planning
Google’s current API documentation lists playlists.list at 1 quota unit per call and both playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete at 50 units per call. Google documents a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most YouTube Data API endpoints, with quota resetting at midnight Pacific Time. Check the YouTube Data API quota documentation for the applicable details.

Estimate writes from the actual difference between current and desired membership. For example, replacing one item with another requires one insert and one delete, or 100 quota units at the documented per-call costs. Avoid needless writes, and do not assume the reset aligns with your local midnight.
Operational safeguards
- Keep a record of the intended daily selection so an operator can inspect the job’s decision.
- Log API errors and retry transient failures carefully; do not blindly repeat destructive actions after an uncertain response.
- Use a stable playlist ID and confirm the authorized account can edit it.
- If a video cannot be added, check its availability to the channel and whether the playlist supports the requested change.
If you need the live program itself to change
Automating a broadcast requires the Live Streaming API’s broadcast and stream resources, not only playlist-item calls. The documented workflow creates a broadcast with a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status; creates or reuses a stream; binds the broadcast to that stream; and transitions the broadcast through its lifecycle. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times. Review Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide for state-dependent rules, including when scheduled times or content settings can be changed.

You will still need a playout or encoder workflow that selects and transmits the intended video at the intended time. Confirm that the chosen software can rotate sources on your schedule and send the resulting feed to YouTube; playlist membership updates do not perform that playout step.
