Windows Task Scheduler can launch a program or script every day at 00:00 IST, but it cannot switch a YouTube playlist inside an encoder by itself. Set the Windows computer’s time zone to India Standard Time, then schedule a tested encoder-specific transition: either switch media within the active stream if your encoder supports it, or end one stream and start another.
Decide what “rotate” means for your stream
A scheduled task runs an action; it does not control a playlist unless the program or script it launches has a way to do that. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe starting an encoder stream and stopping its output. They do not establish that an encoder can swap media while keeping the same YouTube stream session active. Pick the behavior you need before building the task, and test it with the exact encoder and playlist you plan to use.

If uninterrupted playback is essential, do not assume that stopping and restarting is equivalent to an in-session playlist switch. Verify the exact workflow before scheduling it for a public 24/7 channel.
Set the Windows computer to IST
- On the Windows host that will run the encoder, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Set the computer’s time zone to India Standard Time and confirm that the displayed local clock is correct. Do not rely on the computer’s location or on a different time zone’s conversion: the documented
schtasksschedule time is local, and its interface does not provide a separate time-zone setting for the trigger. - Keep the host powered on, connected, and available to run the encoder or transition script at the scheduled time. A daily trigger cannot act if Windows is not running the task in the required user/session context.
Prepare the YouTube encoder and rotation action
Configure the YouTube connection
In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not put it in a public script, log, or shared task argument. YouTube says a custom stream key can be reused and can be reset in Live Control Room; if you reset it, update the encoder before the next scheduled run.

Make the rotation action specific to your encoder
Choose the executable or script Task Scheduler will launch. For an in-session switch, that action must use a control method documented by your encoder to change the active media. For an end-and-restart transition, it must stop the current output and start the next one in the order your encoder supports. The cited YouTube instructions do not supply encoder-specific commands or a playlist-switching API, so there is no safe universal command to copy here.
Keep the encoder’s stream profile consistent across the transition unless you have tested a change. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format in the encoder according to the requirements for your chosen output and encoder; exact values are not established by the cited sources and vary with the format and encoder. Test both playlists for picture and sound, and check the Live Control Room preview before using the schedule on a live channel.

Create the daily midnight task
- Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task. Give the task a clear name, such as “YouTube playlist rotation at IST midnight.”
- On General, select the Windows account that owns or can control the encoder and its files. Decide whether the task must run only while that user is logged on or can run in another context. Microsoft documents an interactive-only setting that runs only while the user is logged on; a graphical encoder may not behave the same way in an unattended session. Test the chosen account and session rather than assuming it will work.
- On Triggers, create a new trigger set to run daily at 00:00. This is midnight in the host’s local time zone, so confirm that the host is configured for IST and that the trigger is enabled.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Browse to the encoder or the transition script, then enter any required arguments and working folder exactly as that program’s documentation specifies. Do not assume that launching the encoder alone changes its current playlist.
- Review any available conditions and task settings. If the task is allowed to run after a missed start, a delayed rotation may occur later than midnight; enable that behavior only if a late transition is acceptable. Avoid a second simultaneous rotation run unless the encoder’s documented behavior makes it safe.
- Save the task, then use Task Scheduler’s run action for a manual test. Confirm the task’s result and inspect the actual encoder and YouTube preview; a successful task launch does not by itself prove that the media changed or that the stream remained healthy.
The Microsoft schtasks interface expresses a daily trigger with /sc daily and a 24-hour local start time with /st. For midnight, that time is 00:00. These settings schedule an action; they do not replace the encoder-specific work in the steps above.

- Run the rotation manually at a safe time before publishing the schedule. Watch the Live Control Room preview and listen for audio after the transition.
- Run a test using the same Windows account, logon state, permissions, and file paths that the scheduled task will use. Check whether the encoder can open every media file and whether its chosen switching method behaves as expected.
- At the first scheduled midnight, monitor the transition. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend testing, previewing, and continuously monitoring stream quality; do not treat a task’s “completed” status as proof that viewers received the intended output.
- After a missed or failed run, inspect Task Scheduler’s result and the encoder’s own status or logs, then restore the intended media manually if needed. A daily trigger will recur at its next scheduled time, but it does not guarantee an immediate retry or recover a failed encoder action.
Common problems and fixes
- The task runs at the wrong hour: the trigger uses the host’s local time. Recheck the Windows time zone and displayed clock, then confirm the trigger is set to 00:00 local.
- The task reports a launch but the playlist did not change: Task Scheduler only launched the selected action. Verify that the encoder supports the chosen switch or that the script actually performs the stop/start sequence.
- The action works manually but not when scheduled: compare the task’s account, logon/session context, permissions, working folder, and access to media files with the successful manual run. Test the actual scheduled context, especially for a GUI encoder.
- The encoder no longer connects after a key reset: replace the saved key in the encoder with the current one from Live Control Room, then test the connection.
- The transition appears successful in Windows but fails in YouTube: inspect the Live Control Room preview and monitor picture and sound. The task result confirms the action’s execution status, not stream quality.
Understand the effect on YouTube events and archives
Ending one stream and starting another can produce a different viewer experience from changing media inside an active encoder session. Whether YouTube presents a separate live event or archive depends on the chosen setup; the cited encoder guidance does not settle that question for a particular transition. YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish archival behavior for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours, so do not infer a result for a 24/7 broadcast from it.
