NGINX RTMP does not automatically loop every video in a directory. To rotate a folder, use a playlist or script to select and order files, have FFmpeg publish them as one continuous stream, and use NGINX RTMP as an ingest or relay point if your setup needs it. Then send the stream to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
The exact playlist mechanism depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, and media files; the NGINX RTMP documentation does not establish a universal folder-watching recipe. The steps below explain the reliable architecture and what to verify before you make the stream public.
How the folder-to-YouTube pipeline works
Keep the jobs separate: a file selector determines what plays next; FFmpeg reads the files and produces the outgoing stream; NGINX RTMP can receive or relay that stream; YouTube ingests it using the destination URL and key from Live Control Room.

- Playlist or script: Defines file order, whether playback repeats, and how missing or newly added files are handled.
- FFmpeg: Reads the selected files and emits a continuous stream in settings supported by YouTube.
- NGINX RTMP: Can receive or push RTMP streams and can execute external programs. Its documented VOD playback supports FLV/MP4 paths, but the README does not say that pointing
playat a directory creates a rotating playlist. See the nginx-rtmp-module README. - YouTube Live: Receives the encoder output at the server URL associated with your stream key.
For a small library that changes infrequently, a static playlist may be simpler than a script that continuously scans a folder. That is an implementation choice, not a behavior guaranteed by NGINX RTMP; test transitions at end-of-file and what happens when a listed file is unavailable.

Choose where FFmpeg runs
Run FFmpeg as the playlist publisher
In this design, your playlist mechanism feeds FFmpeg, which publishes to the destination you configure. NGINX RTMP may be omitted if FFmpeg can publish directly to YouTube, or retained as an ingest/relay point when your architecture calls for it. This keeps folder selection outside NGINX and makes it easier to reason about which component handles ordering and errors.
Have NGINX RTMP launch FFmpeg
The community module documents external-program execution, including FFmpeg processing. This can tie the process to an NGINX RTMP event, but it does not by itself solve folder scanning, restarting after a bad file, or seamless end-of-file transitions. Verify supervision and restart behavior for your actual configuration. The project README also says Windows support is limited and execs are unsupported on Windows builds, so do not assume an exec ffmpeg setup will work there.

F5’s NGINX RTMP documentation describes installing the module for NGINX Plus. That is a distinct distribution path from building the community module against open-source NGINX; follow the instructions for the build you actually run.

Prepare the playlist and media
- Inventory the folder. Decide the intended order and whether the rotation should repeat. Use explicit filenames and paths in the playlist or script rather than assuming directory playback will choose files for you.
- Define update behavior. Decide whether files added after launch should wait until the next run, be picked up by a watcher, or require a restart. The cited module documentation does not establish dynamic folder watching; test the playlist tool or script responsible for this behavior.
- Check media compatibility. Compare codecs, dimensions, frame rates, aspect ratios, and audio layouts across files. Stream copying may be unsuitable when these differ; encoding or normalization may be necessary. Determine this from the actual media and your FFmpeg configuration rather than assuming one command works for every folder.
- Test failure cases. Try a missing file, an unreadable file, and the transition between two representative clips. Confirm whether your selection mechanism skips, stops, or retries; the cited sources do not promise automatic recovery from a bad local file.
Because filenames, media formats, FFmpeg versions, and playlist mechanisms vary, there is no universal command here that can be presented as a validated recipe for every system. Build the playlist and publisher for your environment, then test the resulting continuous output before relying on it.

Configure NGINX RTMP and YouTube
- Confirm the module is installed. Check that the NGINX build you are running actually includes RTMP support. The community module README describes building against NGINX source; the F5 instructions apply to NGINX Plus dynamic-module installation.
- Check the RTMP application path if using NGINX as an endpoint. The community README shows the URL shape
rtmp://host/app/name, whereappcorresponds to an application block in the RTMP configuration. Treat this as the module’s URL shape, not a complete working configuration for every deployment. - Get the destination credentials. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers managing those settings. Treat the key like a password; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. Use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends the encrypted transport in its encoder settings guidance.
- Validate before reload or launch. Run
nginx -twhere appropriate for your installation. F5’s NGINX Plus module instructions then usenginx -s reload; do not treat that page as a universal installation or reload recipe for every community build.
Match YouTube’s encoder requirements
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular source file or server will stream successfully. Confirm supported settings in Live Control Room and monitor stream health.
Choose resolution and bitrate together using the current YouTube table for the selected codec and frame rate; do not treat a recommended encoder bitrate as a measured performance result. If you transcode, configure FFmpeg to produce a consistent output across playlist transitions. If you stream-copy, verify that every file works with the same output session and settings.

YouTube advises testing with representative movement and audio before going live. Do that with both ordinary playback and a clip transition, then watch the stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before publishing to viewers.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Only one file plays: The publisher may be reading a single input rather than a playlist, or the list may not repeat. Check the playlist mechanism’s end-of-file behavior; NGINX RTMP’s documented VOD path does not imply directory rotation.
- The stream stops between clips: The playlist may close the output between inputs, or the media may not be compatible for one continuous session. Test the transition and adjust the publisher or normalize the output.
- A new file does not appear: The playlist may be static or loaded only at startup. Determine whether your script rescans, reloads, or requires a restart; dynamic updates are not established by the cited NGINX RTMP documentation.
- NGINX rejects the configuration: Run
nginx -t, inspect the error, and verify that the configuration syntax matches the installed module and NGINX build. - FFmpeg does not start from NGINX: Confirm the build supports the module’s external-program feature and that paths and permissions are correct. On Windows, the community README warns that execs are unsupported.
- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem: Recheck the server URL and key, RTMP versus RTMPS support, codec, CBR mode, frame rate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance. Keep the key private and reset it if compromised.
- Audio or motion is missing or unstable: Test the source files and encoded output directly, including a clip with representative movement and sound, before restarting a public stream.
