Microsoft says it is available “in most cases” for 10 days after an upgrade. Back up important files first, and do not delete the old installation files: Windows needs them to restore the previous version.
Check whether you need to roll back a feature update
Use Go back when the problem began after upgrading to a new Windows version. If it started after a smaller, individual update instead, Windows has a separate Uninstall updates option. Microsoft distinguishes these recovery actions in its Windows recovery options guide.
A rollback is not a guaranteed fix for every problem. It restores the previous Windows version, which may help with compatibility issues that appeared after the upgrade, but Microsoft does not promise a particular result for an individual PC.
Before you start: protect your files and keep rollback files
- Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backing up files before recovery. The rollback is designed to keep personal files, but a backup gives you a separate copy if something goes wrong.
- Keep the old installation folders. The
windows.oldand$windows.~btfolders are required. Deleting the previous Windows installation to free space removes the ability to go back. - Have the upgrade USB available if you used one. Microsoft advises having that drive on hand for a rollback after an upgrade performed from USB.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. Some recovery options can require it, particularly in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Microsoft explains recovery-key requirements in its recovery options guidance.
Roll back from Windows 11 Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Under recovery options, select Go back if it appears, then follow the on-screen prompts.
The label may not appear on every PC. Microsoft says the option is available “in most cases” for 10 days after upgrading; check the affected PC’s Recovery settings rather than assuming it is available. Microsoft also says the previous version is automatically deleted after 10 days. See Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows instructions.

What changes when you go back?
Microsoft says the process keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverts changes made to Settings. Apps changed after the upgrade may not work as expected once you return to the earlier version. Do not assume every app, driver, device, or setting will be restored to precisely its former state.
Read each prompt before confirming. If you rely on a particular app or device, note what you installed or changed after the upgrade so you can check it after the rollback.

If “Go back” is missing or Windows will not start
Go back is missing in Settings
The rollback period may have passed, or the files needed for the previous installation may no longer be present. Do not try to force the rollback by deleting or replacing system files. If the problem followed an individual update rather than a feature upgrade, look for the separate update-removal option in Recovery settings.
Windows starts, but a recent individual update caused the problem
Use Uninstall updates rather than rolling back the feature version. The precise available options depend on the PC and update. Microsoft describes update removal alongside other recovery choices in its Windows recovery options guide.

Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) includes recovery tools such as Uninstall updates for problems caused by an update. The available paths depend on the device and its recovery state; encrypted devices may ask for the BitLocker recovery key. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment instructions for accessing and using those tools.
Reset this PC and reinstalling Windows are more disruptive alternatives with different consequences for files and apps. They are not the first choice when the built-in Go back option is available; review Microsoft’s recovery options before choosing another method.
