For a Galaxy phone on a public, stable One UI update, Samsung says you cannot downgrade to earlier firmware. The limited exception is leaving a One UI beta: if Samsung’s beta program offers a “Downgrade” option, its documented Smart Switch process can return the phone to the previous official version—but it initializes the device and erases its data.
First identify whether you installed a beta or stable update
The rollback options depend on the kind of software currently on the phone. A public stable release and a beta build are not interchangeable cases.
- Stable update: Samsung’s current software-update guidance says that once a device has been updated to the latest software, it cannot be downgraded to previous firmware because of enhanced security policies.
- Beta build: Samsung Community’s Beta Manager described a specific exit procedure using Smart Switch to return to the previous official version. It applies to leaving a beta, not to reversing any stable update. The instructions were posted on May 23, 2025; check the current beta program instructions for your device and confirm that “Downgrade” is offered before proceeding: Samsung Community beta instructions.
Before contacting support or following a beta procedure, note your exact Galaxy model, carrier and region, One UI version, and Android or software version. Samsung says settings and menu names can vary by model and software version.
If you are enrolled in a One UI beta
Samsung Community’s documented beta-exit route uses Smart Switch on a computer. The available control and procedure can depend on the device and current beta program, so follow the instructions shown for your phone rather than assuming every beta has the same screens.

- Back up important files and information before starting. The rollback initializes the phone, so data, app state, and settings may not return exactly as they were.
- Check the current instructions for your device in the Samsung beta program and confirm that Smart Switch shows the “Downgrade” option.
- Connect the phone to a computer with a compatible USB data cable and use Smart Switch to follow the offered beta rollback procedure.
- Allow the process to finish. If Smart Switch does not detect the phone or the rollback option is absent, stop and use Samsung support or the beta program’s instructions rather than trying an unofficial firmware method.
A USB data cable can help establish the computer connection required by this workflow. It does not bypass Samsung’s restriction on downgrading a stable release.
If you installed a stable One UI update
Samsung does not document a general consumer procedure for restoring earlier firmware after a stable update. Its published guidance attributes the restriction to enhanced security policies. Smart Switch may help install an available official update or recover from an update problem, but Samsung’s recovery guidance is not a promise that it can downgrade a stable build.

For problems that began after an update, first record what is going wrong and check whether Samsung has made a later official update available for your model and carrier. You can report the issue through Samsung Members or contact Samsung support. If the phone is unstable, consult an authorized service center.
What to try if the phone will not boot or an update failed
Samsung’s US guidance recommends checking for an available official update through the phone’s settings or Smart Switch. For Smart Switch, connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable supplied with the Galaxy device; some computers may require an adapter. Samsung also recommends Samsung-approved chargers and cables for charging.

If Smart Switch cannot connect, Samsung advises troubleshooting the computer connection and checking the device’s software version and carrier update availability before retrying an official update where available. These are update-recovery steps, not a route to an earlier stable firmware version. Samsung says service may be required when the device does not boot normally after an update failure.

Risks of trying an unofficial downgrade
Samsung Gulf warns that downgrading can cause malfunctions, affect Knox protections, create app incompatibility, and affect warranty coverage or future Samsung support. Those are potential consequences, not guaranteed results for every phone; warranty and support implications depend on region and circumstances.

Samsung’s general guidance cites enhanced security policies as the reason stable downgrades are unavailable. For technical context, a 2021 Samsung Knox white paper describes hardware-backed Root of Trust components that include rollback prevention, noting that older software may contain known vulnerabilities. That enterprise-oriented document provides background, not a model-specific statement about every current consumer Galaxy phone: Samsung Knox Platform for Enterprise white paper.
Samsung’s reviewed consumer guidance does not present manual firmware flashing or bypassing rollback protections as a supported general rollback method. If an unofficial modification is under consideration, weigh the risks to device function, security, app compatibility, and access to Samsung support rather than treating it as an ordinary settings change.
