To review or revoke an AI assistant’s access, check the specific connected app and account—not just the assistant’s general approval setting. ChatGPT and Gemini separate approval prompts, connected-account links, provider authorizations, and phone operating-system permissions. Change the layer that grants the access you want to remove, then separately review data that was already stored or shared.
How AI-assistant permissions are divided
There is no single universal permission switch. An assistant may have several independent forms of access, and changing one does not automatically change the others.

The account matters as much as the app. A personal account, a work or school account, and a different account signed in on the same device can expose different services. Workspace policies and administrator approvals can also determine which apps are available.

- Open the assistant you actually use. Check each assistant surface separately, such as a web app and a mobile app.
- List every connected app and account. Record the service name, the account identity, and the actions or information it can use. Depending on the connection, this can include emails, files, calendar events, photos, videos, location, device information, or preferences.
- Identify the goal. Decide whether you want fewer approval prompts, no future access through one account, no provider authorization at all, no camera or microphone access on the phone, or deletion of previously stored information.
- Check account ownership. For a work or school account, an administrator may control the app or authorization. Disconnecting a personal account does not necessarily change a workspace-wide connection.
- Capture anything you may need. If a connected app supplies information to an ongoing workflow, save required records before disconnecting. Revocation changes future access; it is not a data-export procedure.
ChatGPT: change approval behavior or disconnect the account
ChatGPT has separate controls for how it asks for approval and for whether an individual app account remains connected. OpenAI’s help guidance explicitly says that changing an app permission does not disconnect the app or revoke access already granted to a provider account.
Change when ChatGPT asks before acting
On an eligible personal account, open Settings and look for Plugins > Permissions. On accounts where the interface uses the newer label, inspect Settings > Apps instead. The controls that appear depend on the app, account, workspace, and eligibility.
Where offered, the defaults include:
- Always ask, which requests approval before the relevant use.
- Allow read actions, which permits the defined read-only uses without the same approval prompt.
- Allow low-risk actions, which permits the low-risk actions covered by that app’s permission model.
These choices affect the assistant’s approval behavior. They are useful if you want to supervise every use, but selecting Always ask is not a revocation step.

To stop future use through a particular connection, open Settings, choose Apps or Plugins, select the app, and disconnect the account shown there. Some interfaces put an account-specific control under the selected app’s settings. Disconnect the exact account you identified during your inventory; another account may remain connected.
If the app belongs to a managed workspace, an administrator may need to disable the workspace app. A user-level setting cannot override an organization’s app policy, and an administrator’s change may affect other members rather than only your account.
Review the provider authorization during connection
When you connect or reconnect an app, read the provider authorization screen before accepting it. OpenAI says that this screen lists the requested services and permissions. Compare those requests with the task you intend to perform, and stop if the account or scope is broader than expected.
Workspace approval can be a separate step from connecting your account in ChatGPT. Treat an administrator approval, the ChatGPT connection, and the provider authorization as separate decisions.

Gemini: use Connected Apps for account links
Google documents Connected Apps as the Gemini control for connecting or disconnecting services. The menu and app list vary by account, device, country, and Gemini product surface, so the labels on your screen may differ.
Find Connected Apps on the Gemini web app
- Open the Gemini web app and sign in to the account whose connections you want to inspect.
- Open Settings and help.
- Choose Connected Apps.
- If that entry is not shown, look under Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps.
- Review the listed apps and the account currently connected to each one.
- Select the app you no longer want to use and choose its disconnect option, then confirm the change.
Google warns that the list depends on the Gemini app, device, country, and other factors. An app missing from one surface is not proof that the account has no other authorization elsewhere; check the provider’s account controls as well.
Understand what a Gemini connection can exchange
Google’s privacy documentation says Connected Apps can exchange Gemini chat information, device or preference information, and location. Depending on the service and feature, the content can include emails, files, calendar events, photos, and videos. The exact scope belongs to the individual connection, so read the details shown for your account rather than assuming every app receives every category.
Some Android Connected Apps—including Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and device assistance—can remain available when Keep Activity is turned off. Google Workspace may be unavailable in that state. Therefore, turning off Keep Activity is not a universal substitute for disconnecting an app.

On Android, Gemini is hosted by the Google app, even when the separate Gemini app is installed. Device permissions must therefore be reviewed on the Google app’s information page, not only inside Gemini’s account settings.
- Touch and hold the Google app icon.
- Tap App info.
- Tap Permissions.
- Select the permission you want to inspect, such as camera, microphone, contacts, or location.
- Choose Allow or Don’t allow, according to the access you want.
Available permissions and the resulting behavior vary by Android version and device manufacturer. Blocking a device permission can stop the Google app from using that hardware or data on the phone, but it does not disconnect a Google Account from Gemini or erase cloud-stored conversations.
Google Account: remove a third-party authorization
If you approved an external app through a Google Account prompt, remove that authorization in Google Account controls. This is a provider-side change and is separate from Gemini’s Connected Apps page.

- Open the Google Account connected-apps page while signed in to the relevant account.
- Select the app you want to review.
- Choose See details.
- Select Remove access.
- Choose Confirm.
Google states that revoking the third-party app’s access prevents it from accessing the Google Account data covered by that authorization. Google also warns that the third party may still hold information it received earlier. Contact that service directly if you want it to delete those copies.
Revocation is not the same as deletion
Disconnecting an account is primarily a future-access control. It does not automatically clean up every record created before the change.
- ChatGPT: Disconnecting a Google app does not automatically delete existing ChatGPT conversations or saved memories.
- Gemini: Disconnecting a Connected App does not delete Gemini Apps Activity.
- Other apps: Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data another app already received.
- Provider authorizations: Removing Google Account access does not guarantee deletion of information previously delivered to the third party.
After revocation, separately review the assistant’s chat history, activity controls, saved memories, and the connected service’s own data-management or deletion process. If another company stored a copy, its retention policy and deletion request process determine what happens next.

What to do when the setting is missing or ineffective
Connected Apps or Apps is not visible
Check that you are signed in to the intended account and using the product surface covered by the instructions. Google says Gemini’s menu and app list vary by account, device, country, and other factors. In Gemini, try both Settings and help > Connected Apps and Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps. In ChatGPT, inspect both Apps and Plugins labels because the available navigation depends on account and workspace eligibility.
The app still appears after you changed an approval setting
An approval preference controls prompting, not the underlying connection. Return to the selected app’s account settings and disconnect the account. If the app was authorized through Google Account controls, remove that authorization separately.
A work or school connection cannot be removed
Ask the organization’s administrator to review the workspace app or policy. Workspace approval and a user’s individual assistant connection are separate controls, so an administrator may have to disable the app for the organization.
The assistant stopped using a device feature but still accesses cloud data
You probably changed an Android permission rather than the account connection. Revisit the Google app’s App info > Permissions page for hardware and device data, then use Gemini Connected Apps or Google Account connected-app controls for cloud access.

Old chats or information remain
That behavior is expected after a simple disconnect. Review chat history, Gemini Apps Activity, saved memories, and the connected service’s records separately. A provider can stop future access while retaining information delivered before revocation.
Verify that revocation worked
Do not treat the confirmation dialog as the end of the process. Sign out and back in if necessary, then inspect the same control again. The app should no longer show the disconnected account, or it should show a clear reconnect option. If a provider-side authorization was removed, check the Google Account connected-app list as well. Testing a harmless request can help confirm that the assistant now asks you to reconnect instead of returning account data, but avoid sending new sensitive information while testing.

Check every surface where the assistant is signed in. A web connection, mobile connection, and workspace connection can expose different controls. Removing one account from a personal profile does not automatically remove a second account, another browser profile, or an organization-managed connection.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing “Always ask” with disconnection. Prompting changes the approval step; it does not remove the account grant.
- Changing the wrong signed-in account. Confirm the account avatar or email before editing settings.
- Assuming Android permissions control cloud data. Blocking the microphone or contacts permission does not revoke Google Account access.
- Assuming one Gemini menu is universal. Device, country, account, and product surface affect the entries shown.
- Deleting activity and expecting another service to erase its copy. Data already sent to a connected app may require a separate deletion request.
- Ignoring administrators. A work or school administrator may control availability or require a separate disablement.
A repeatable privacy review checklist
- Write down the assistant, app, and exact account before making changes.
- Decide whether you need to change prompts, disconnect an account, revoke provider authorization, block a phone permission, delete assistant records, or request deletion from another service.
- Check personal and work or school accounts separately.
- Read the provider authorization screen whenever you connect or reconnect an app.
- After disconnecting, verify that the account no longer appears as connected.
- Review chat history, activity, memories, and data held by the connected service if deletion matters.
- Recheck the controls after an app, operating-system, or assistant interface update.
Availability and documentation dates
Settings change as assistants add or rename features. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was last updated September 24, 2026. OpenAI’s help page for managing app permissions in ChatGPT was marked updated 11 days before October 16, 2026. The exact menu shown to you can still depend on account type, region, device, product surface, and administrator policy.
The practical rule is simple: use the assistant’s connection control to stop that assistant-account link, the provider’s connected-app page to revoke an external authorization, and the phone’s permission page to block device capabilities. Then handle deletion as a separate task.

Will disconnecting Gemini delete my Gemini Apps Activity?
No. Google says disconnecting a Connected App does not delete Gemini Apps Activity. Review activity controls separately, and remember that another app may retain information it received before the disconnect.
How do I stop Gemini from using my Android microphone or camera?
Because Gemini is hosted by the Google app on Android, touch and hold the Google app, tap App info, tap Permissions, select the camera or microphone permission, and choose Allow or Don’t allow. This does not revoke cloud-account access.
