To review Meta’s ad controls, open Facebook or Instagram settings, go to Accounts Center—or Meta Account if your account has moved to the new settings area—and select Ad preferences. Look for Activity from other businesses to manage how information businesses share with Meta is used for personalization. To check a specific ad, open its three-dot menu and select Why am I seeing this ad? Menu labels and availability can vary by account, country, and ad placement.
Review the information Meta uses for ads
- Open settings in Facebook or Instagram. Find Accounts Center or, for accounts in the gradual transition, Meta Account. Meta announced the change in April 2026 and said the transition may take a year. See Meta’s announcement about Meta Account.
- Open Ad preferences. Meta describes this as a centralized place to manage ad settings. See Meta’s Accounts Center announcement.
- Look for Activity from other businesses. This is the name Meta uses for the expanded control over how information shared by businesses is used for personalization. It was previously called Activity information from ad partners. The older, separate Your activity off Meta technologies control is being discontinued as the change rolls out. See Meta’s June 2026 announcement.
Meta says businesses may share information about activity such as purchases or games played on other websites. Meta says its expanded setting will also cover personalization beyond ads, including Feed content and AI responses. Meta characterized the change by saying, “We aren’t collecting any new data as part of this update”; that is the company’s description of the change.
Check why a particular ad appeared
On an ad, open the three-dot menu and choose Why am I seeing this ad? The explanation can summarize how activity on Meta technologies and information from outside them may inform ad delivery. Depending on the interface, it may also link to ad preferences or offer an option to hide all ads from that advertiser. Meta reported that the explanation was live on Facebook Reels in its September 17, 2026 update; Meta has described availability on Instagram Feed, Stories, and Reels in earlier rollout notes. Know which control you are changing

These controls work at different levels; changing one does not necessarily make the others unnecessary. Meta’s 2023 explanation of centralized preferences is available in its Accounts Center announcement.

Account for regional privacy settings and rollout differences
Meta’s U.S. privacy notice describes ad-related controls for activity information from ad partners and account settings across accounts. It also describes recognition of Global Privacy Control for people with applicable rights under U.S. privacy law. Those legal options are U.S.-specific and should not be assumed to apply identically elsewhere. See Meta’s U.S. privacy notice.
Meta’s announcements describe staged changes, and its Help Center may require a login to view account-specific guidance. If a label or control is missing, check the settings in the account you use rather than assuming every account has the same screen. Country, account migration status, and ad placement can affect what appears.

What Meta has described historically
In a 2019 announcement, Meta described Ad Preferences sections showing businesses that had used an uploaded customer list to run an ad within the prior seven days and businesses associated with lists used in the prior 90 days.
