An AI-generated room image is a concept visualization—not proof that a space is safe, buildable, accessible, or code-compliant. Review it as a prompt for questions, then verify the actual layout, dimensions, specifications, and site conditions against the rules that apply to the project.
What an AI room rendering can—and cannot—tell you
A polished image may suggest how a room could look, but a perspective view can conceal or distort dimensions, omit important components, or depict objects that would not work as shown. The Royal Institute of British Architects’ RIBA AI Report 2025 warns that generative AI can incorrectly affirm that a design is safe or buildable.
Use visual review to flag questions, not to certify a design. Even a plausible-looking route or fixture arrangement must be checked against dimensioned plans and the actual site. A generic checklist cannot establish compliance.

First identify which rules apply
Before assessing accessibility or safety, establish the project’s location, facility use, and scope. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by whether the space is public, commercial, governmental, or residential, and whether the work is new construction, an alteration, or an addition.
#1 Best Overall
In the United States, the ADA Accessibility Standards apply to covered places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities in new construction, alterations, and additions. They operate alongside applicable state and local requirements. The U.S. Access Board explains the standards’ scope at ADA Accessibility Standards; ADA.gov distinguishes the statute, regulations, and design standards at Law, Regulations & Standards. Do not assume the ADA applies identically to every private residential room.
For a real project, identify applicable accessibility, building, fire, and life-safety rules and consult qualified design and code professionals. Standards may reference other industry requirements for elements such as egress and fire alarms. A generated image is not an official compliance review.

Use a verification workflow
-
Record the project context
Write down the location, facility type and use, project scope, and whether the space is public, commercial, governmental, or residential. Determine which standards and local codes apply before describing the design as accessible or safe.

Ask for the evidence behind the image
Request dimensioned plans and elevations, door and fixture schedules, product specifications, and views from more than one angle. Ask which elements were generated or altered and which were checked against the real site. Compare the supplied drawings and specifications with the rendering rather than treating the image as a plan.

Trace the intended route
Follow the route from the entrance through the room to the relevant fixtures and controls. Flag apparent pinch points, obstructions, abrupt level changes, or door swings that seem to block circulation. Then verify route clearances and maneuvering space using actual dimensions from plans or site measurements.
-
Check usable space, approaches, and reach
Review clear floor space at fixtures, the approach to each fixture, reach to controls, and whether furnishings can be used without obstructing circulation. Compare real measurements with criteria that apply to the project. A tape measure can help collect site dimensions, but it cannot interpret code or validate a generated image.
-
Flag visual inconsistencies for investigation
Look for warped or merged objects, impossible geometry, contradictions between views, implausible door swings, missing supports or controls, and fixtures or materials that appear decorative rather than functional. These are leads to verify against drawings, specifications, and site conditions—not proof of a violation.

Escalate safety questions
Check exits and egress routes, alarms, guards, glazing, electrical details, and fire-related elements against project documents and applicable codes. This list is not a complete safety checklist. Have appropriately qualified design and code professionals review the project before relying on the design.
How to describe accessibility without overclaiming
Be precise about what has been reviewed. If an image is AI-generated or altered, label it where relevant; state which drawings, measurements, or site conditions have been checked and which remain unverified. Avoid calling a room “accessible,” “safe,” or “compliant” unless those claims are substantiated by project-specific review.
Accessibility is also a process question, not just a visual property. Accessibility Standards Canada’s summary of CAN-ASC-6.2:2025 concerns accessible and equitable AI systems, not room-construction code. It describes involving people with disabilities in AI design, testing, use, and review, and avoiding misleading or harmful outputs. That is a useful principle for how design tools and review processes are developed; it does not certify a room layout.
For U.S. ADA matters, the Access Board’s guide notes that proposed alternative designs are not prohibited when supported by available data; in an ADA Title II or Title III investigation, compliance review, or lawsuit, the covered entity bears the burden of proving that the alternative provides equal or greater access. See Chapter 1: Using the ADA Standards. This qualification concerns ADA compliance; it is not a universal design rule.
