How you can revert Chrome depends on whether you mean the Chrome browser on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, a browser managed by an organization, or the ChromeOS operating system on a Chromebook. For most people, the safest first move is to troubleshoot the problem and keep Chrome updated; downgrading can expose you to security flaws or put local data at risk.

First, identify what you want to roll back

  • Chrome browser on a computer: This is the application installed on Windows, macOS, or Linux. A browser downgrade is different from changing the operating system.
  • Managed Chrome browser: If your organization controls Chrome, an administrator may be able to roll it back using Google Admin settings. Contact the administrator rather than trying to work around device policy.
  • Chromebook: The relevant procedure is a ChromeOS rollback. It changes the device’s operating-system version, not just the browser, and can erase local files.

Understand the security and data risks before downgrading

Google recommends running the latest Chrome version because earlier versions may contain known security issues. Treat a rollback as a temporary troubleshooting measure and return to a supported current release once the problem is resolved. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise rollback guidance.

A browser downgrade or reinstall can also affect profile data. Google’s documentation describes local snapshots after major browser updates: three recent snapshots are retained by default, though policy can change retention. For compatible rollbacks to Chrome 83 or newer, a snapshot may restore items such as bookmarks, history, session restore data, passwords, autofill, cookies, and browser sign-in state. This is not a substitute for a separate backup: data saved after the latest update may be lost if it was not synced, and snapshot behavior depends on policy and version. Check Google’s rollback guidance and its explanation of Chrome browser data snapshots, then verify Chrome Sync and back up important information before making changes.

If your organization manages Chrome, ask an administrator

Google documents an administrator-controlled rollback for managed Chrome browsers. In the Google Admin console, an administrator can set a target browser version and choose the rollback-to-target-version option. The documented rollback window covers the three latest major Chrome releases; it is not a general way for every user or platform to install any older version.

If Chrome is managed by your school or employer, ask its IT administrator to assess whether a rollback is appropriate. Google’s documentation describes the control and its limits in Chrome Enterprise rollback guidance. Do not bypass organization settings: the administrator needs to weigh compatibility, data effects, and security exposure.

If you use Chrome on Windows, macOS, or Linux

Google’s Chrome Enterprise FAQ describes a manual downgrade approach: uninstall the current browser, remove the user profile data directory, and install an older version. Removing that directory permanently deletes locally stored bookmarks, browsing history, and other saved information. Do not remove it unless you have verified a backup and understand what will be lost.

This FAQ procedure is not a safe routine recommendation for every consumer installation, and it does not guarantee that a particular older release or installer is available. Google states that older Windows MSI versions are unavailable and unsupported. The FAQ is at Google Chrome Enterprise Help; check its current instructions and your platform’s supported installation options before taking action.

If you still decide to proceed, first confirm that important data is synced or separately backed up. Then follow the applicable official uninstall and installation instructions for your operating system. Avoid deleting profile data as a speculative fix: it is a destructive step, not an ordinary way to undo an update.

If you have a Chromebook, ChromeOS rollback is different

On a Chromebook, rollback means changing the ChromeOS operating system through the Google Admin console, not reverting only the Chrome browser. It is an administrator-managed option available only for eligible recent versions and depends on the device, channel, target image, and rollback protections.

A ChromeOS rollback requires the device to restart, wipe, and be re-enrolled. Local data is deleted, including files in Downloads. Some devices, including ChromeOS Flex, do not support rollback. An administrator should review Google’s current ChromeOS rollback instructions and ensure needed files are backed up before proceeding.

Try these lower-risk fixes for a temporary compatibility problem

  • Check whether the affected site or app has a fix or workaround, and try again after updating it.
  • If the issue began after adding an extension, disable that extension temporarily and see whether the problem changes.
  • Verify that Chrome Sync is working and make a separate backup of important local data before changing Chrome or ChromeOS.
  • Use an organization-approved browser or device if a work or school service is temporarily incompatible.
  • Once the issue is resolved, return to a supported current Chrome version rather than leaving an older release in place.

Google describes a general Chrome browser update cadence of every two weeks and ChromeOS device updates of approximately every four weeks; these are general schedules, not promises about the timing of an individual device’s update. See Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education FAQ.
