Find your receipt or order page, check the policy before shipping anything, and keep the shoebox and packaging until you know what the seller requires.
1. Identify the seller and check its policy
Look at your receipt, order confirmation, or account order page to confirm who sold the shoes, when you bought them, and whether you purchased online or in a store. A manufacturer’s policy does not automatically apply if you bought the shoes from another retailer or a marketplace seller. For example, Nike says its policy applies to Nike purchases, while Brooks’ online return instructions cover gear bought from brooksrunning.com.
Before starting a return, check the seller’s current policy for the deadline and its start date, whether worn shoes qualify, any exclusions, required proof of purchase, the return route, and possible shipping fees. The U.S. retailer examples below were published policy terms accessed October 4, 2026; they are not universal rules and may change.
2. Check whether the shoes can be worn or used
Do not assume that a short test run is acceptable to every seller. Policies differ: some accept worn shoes under stated conditions, while others generally expect items to be new. If you have already run in the shoes, check the policy or ask the seller before sending them back.

- REI: Its U.S. help page says most worn or gently used items can be returned within one year for Co-op members and 90 days for non-members. Conditions apply: used gear must be cleaned, and certain categories, ordinary wear, misuse, and accidents are excluded. Check REI’s used-gear policy.
- Fleet Feet: Its U.S. policy says most items should be in new condition. Opened, damaged, or unreceipted items may be denied. Check Fleet Feet’s return policy.
Nike’s U.S. policy states that returns or exchanges are allowed within 60 days of an online order’s delivery or a Nike store purchase, with exceptions. Check its page for the requirements that apply to your order. Read Nike’s return policy.
3. Compare the deadline and conditions
These are published U.S. policy examples accessed October 4, 2026. The deadline alone does not establish that a particular order qualifies; check the current terms for your purchase and any exceptions.

4. Prepare the shoes and start the return
- Find proof of purchase. Keep the receipt, order email, or order-page details handy. Check whether the seller requires a receipt or another way to verify the purchase.
- Read the seller’s packing instructions. Keep the original shoebox while you check. Fleet Feet requires shoes to be in their original shoebox, with that box enclosed in a protective box or bag. Do not assume another seller’s label or packaging instructions apply.
- Clean used shoes if required. REI’s used-gear policy requires used gear to be cleaned. Follow the specific seller’s instructions for your item.
- Start the return through the seller. Use the seller’s online return process or take the shoes to an eligible store, as its policy allows. Brooks provides online return instructions and prepaid-label information; check those instructions for your order.
- Save confirmation and tracking. Keep the return confirmation and tracking details until the return is resolved. Check whether shipping charges are refundable and what the seller says about refund timing; the policies above do not establish one processing time for all retailers.
5. Find out whether an exchange is direct or a new order
Ask whether the seller will exchange the shoes directly or whether you must return them and place a separate order. For an online Fleetfeet.com order, Fleet Feet says it does not offer traditional exchanges: return the unwanted pair and order the desired size or style. REI’s exchange instructions similarly describe starting a return and selecting or purchasing a replacement, with a store visit as another option. Check REI’s exchange instructions. Before choosing a return-and-reorder route, check replacement availability and how long a refund may take so you can decide whether to wait for the refund or buy the replacement separately.

6. If the return is refused
There is no single return entitlement established here for shoes that do not fit: consumer protections depend on the buyer’s location and circumstances. If the seller refuses a return and the dispute matters, consult the relevant local consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser.
