The deadline and its starting point vary by country and purchase type. Before acting, note your country, the seller, what you bought, when you ordered it and when it arrived.
First identify the return route and deadline
A return policy offered by a shop is not the same as a legal right. A shop may accept unwanted items under its own policy, while consumer law may provide separate cancellation or remedies for goods that are faulty or never arrive. The applicable rules can depend on where you live, where the seller operates, what you purchased and why you want a refund.
- Changed your mind: Check the seller’s voluntary policy and whether a statutory distance-purchase cancellation right applies.
- Faulty or not as described: Use the applicable consumer-rights route for defective goods; do not assume a change-of-mind window is the right process.
- Order never arrived: Treat this as a shipping or non-delivery problem, not a return after delivery.

How to return the item without losing track of time
- Save the relevant records. Keep the order confirmation, the seller’s return policy that applied when you bought the item, any promised shipping date and the delivery date. Check whether the stated deadline is for requesting a return, dispatching it or having the seller receive it.
- Send notice promptly through the seller’s stated channel. Use its return portal or contact method, describe the order and say clearly that you are cancelling or requesting a return. Save the dated confirmation or message.
- Follow the return instructions. Check for a required authorization, label, carrier or packaging. Confirm who pays postage before sending the parcel.
- Keep proof of dispatch. Retain the drop-off receipt and tracking details. These are practical safeguards for a deadline-sensitive return; the official guidance below does not prescribe one universal evidence list.
- Track the refund deadline. Save the seller’s confirmation and monitor the payment method. If the refund does not arrive when due, contact the seller in writing and then seek advice for your location.
How the rules differ in the UK, EU and US
These examples are not interchangeable. Check the current official guidance and the seller’s instructions for your specific order, including any product or service exceptions.

UK: cancellation after delivery
For a qualifying distance purchase, GOV.UK says you generally have 14 days from receiving the item to tell the trader you want to cancel, followed by another 14 days to return it. The refund timing and standard-delivery treatment are shown in the table. The guidance concerns online, mail and telephone orders, and exceptions apply; faulty goods may involve different rights. EU: withdrawal is separate from faulty-goods guarantees
The European Commission describes a general 14-day right to cancel an online product or service purchase without justification, subject to exceptions. Your Europe explains return-cost responsibilities and the next-working-day rule. Do not confuse withdrawal with the EU legal guarantee for faulty goods: the Commission treats that as a separate protection. US: delayed shipment is not a change-of-mind return
The FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule addresses shipment timing for covered orders. If the seller gave no shipping time, the general deadline in the FTC guidance is 30 days. When a covered shipment is delayed, the FTC says: “If there’s a delay shipping your order, the seller has to tell you and give you the choice of either agreeing to the delay or canceling your order for a full refund.” This does not establish a uniform US return deadline for an item that arrived and is simply unwanted; check the seller’s policy and the rules that apply to your situation.
Who pays return shipping, and when should the refund arrive?
Do not assume a return label or postage is free. Under the EU withdrawal guidance, consumers normally pay return postage and packaging unless the trader agreed otherwise or failed to disclose the costs. For other locations and seller-policy returns, check the seller’s exact terms before mailing the item.

Refund timing also depends on the route. For the UK qualifying cancellation described above, GOV.UK says the refund is due within 14 days after the trader receives the returned item, and the trader may wait until it receives the item or evidence of return. The stated refund includes standard delivery charges, not necessarily an amount paid for upgraded delivery.
What to do if the order never arrived
Do not submit a standard post-delivery return for a parcel you never received. Save the promised shipping date and order record, contact the seller through its stated channel, and ask whether it will ship or cancel and refund. For covered US orders, the FTC rule requires the seller to notify you about a shipping delay and offer acceptance of the delay or cancellation for a full refund; if the seller does not ship, the FTC says it must issue a full refund. Other countries may have different rules.

If the seller does not resolve the problem
Start with the official consumer-advice route for your location. UK readers can use GOV.UK’s links to national advice services; consumers with qualifying EU cross-border disputes can consult European Consumer Centres through Your Europe. If you paid by card, contact the card issuer promptly about possible dispute options. The FTC notes that protections differ for credit and debit cards, so a chargeback is not automatic or guaranteed.
