To retry a screenshot API request without accidentally paying for a second capture, first determine whether the original operation definitely failed or its outcome is unknown. Correct permanent errors instead of retrying them, honor Retry-After for rate limits, use bounded backoff with jitter for eligible transient failures, and reuse the same idempotency key for the same capture if the endpoint supports it. A timeout alone does not prove the server failed: it may have completed the screenshot before the response was lost.

Why a retry can create a second charge

A screenshot request has two sides: the provider processes a capture, and your client receives a response. If the capture succeeds but the response is delayed or lost, your client may time out without knowing the result. Sending a new request can then start a second successful capture. ScreenshotEngine explicitly warns that a client timeout can occur after capture succeeds and that a retry may count as another successful request (ScreenshotEngine API documentation).

Whether any attempt is billable depends on the provider’s contract. Screenshot API says failed renders return their reserved unit on documented 502 and 503 errors; ScreenshotEngine says failed requests do not count against its successful-capture allowance, but also warns that a retry after a successful capture can count again. Neither policy establishes how every screenshot service handles failures, cache hits, replays, or timeouts.

Classify the response before deciding to retry

Use both the HTTP status and the provider’s structured error code. The mappings below are common decision guidance, not universal guarantees; providers define their own status and billing semantics.

Response or outcome What to do
400-class validation error Do not resend unchanged input. Correct the URL or parameters first. Screenshot API documents errors for a missing or invalid URL, unmatched selector, and invalid format (Screenshot API documentation).
401 authentication error Fix the API key, permissions, or access configuration before another attempt. Repeating the same unauthorized request will not resolve the cause.
402 or documented quota exhaustion Check usage, plan limits, and reset timing. Wait for a documented reset or change the plan or workload; immediate retries do not restore quota.
429 rate limit Honor a valid Retry-After value, reduce concurrency, and retry only within a bounded budget if the provider permits it. A rate limit is distinct from monthly quota exhaustion on providers that document both.
Documented temporary busy or render failure A limited retry may help. Follow that endpoint’s retry guidance and confirm how failed attempts affect billing or quota. For example, Screenshot API documents 502 render_failed and 503 busy; ScreenshotEngine documents different error conditions.
Timeout or connection loss after submission Treat the outcome as unknown, not failed. If supported, retry the same logical operation with the same idempotency key and equivalent parameters. Otherwise, check for a request ID, job-status endpoint, usage record, or provider support path before creating a fresh capture.

Build retries that are bounded and safe

Persist the operation before sending

Create and store an operation identifier before making the HTTP request. If the endpoint supports idempotency, associate one key with that logical capture and retain it until the outcome is known. All retries of that capture should use the same key and equivalent payload. A new user-requested capture is a new operation and should use a new key. Follow the provider’s key scope, retention window, and parameter-matching rules; they differ by API.

Do not assume that adding an Idempotency-Key header makes an endpoint idempotent. Verify that the specific route supports it and learn whether repeated keys replay a prior response, suppress work, or have another documented behavior. For example, api-screenshot.com describes an idempotency-key contract for screenshot-job creation but identifies its API as a feature-gated development preview and says production API routes currently return HTTP 503 (api-screenshot.com API documentation). That preview is not evidence of a generally available production service.

Honor server timing, then use capped backoff

For a 429, parse Retry-After according to the provider’s documented format and wait at least that long. If it is missing or unusable and a retry is allowed, use increasing delays with random jitter. Set both a maximum attempt count and a maximum elapsed retry time so a failing service cannot hold a worker indefinitely. Reduce concurrency when rate limited rather than allowing a retry storm. OpenAI’s guidance on rate limits similarly recommends accounting for retries already performed by an SDK (OpenAI rate-limit guidance).

There is no universal retry count. ScreenshotEngine gives “at most three retries” as an example for its temporary-error strategy, not as a standard for every API or workload. Also inspect your HTTP client, SDK, reverse proxy, and queue: retries at several layers can multiply attempts unexpectedly.

Log enough to reconcile, not secrets

For each operation, record its identifier or idempotency key, provider request or job ID when available, attempt number, HTTP status, structured error code, timestamps, and final outcome. Redact API keys, authorization headers, and sensitive cookies. Before promising that retries cannot incur extra charges, establish the endpoint’s rules for successful captures, failed renders, cache hits, idempotency replays, and ambiguous requests.

Check the provider contract before production

Provider documentation should answer the following for the exact endpoint and plan you use:

  • Applicable concurrency and request-rate limits, which can vary by plan and change over time.

For general API context, Shopify explains how repeated requests with the same idempotency key can be recognized as duplicates, while emphasizing that each API defines its own mechanics (Shopify idempotent requests documentation). That general explanation does not establish that a particular screenshot API supports idempotency.

Example retry decision logic

  1. Submit the capture with a persisted operation ID and, if the endpoint supports it, that operation’s idempotency key.
  2. If the response indicates invalid input, authentication failure, or exhausted quota, stop. Fix the cause before submitting again.
  3. If the response is 429, wait for the documented Retry-After; then retry only if the provider allows it, with reduced concurrency and a bounded attempt/time budget.
  4. If the provider identifies a temporary busy or render error as retryable, apply capped exponential backoff with jitter and use the same key for the same operation when supported.
  5. If the client times out or loses the connection after submission, mark the operation outcome unknown. Reconcile by request ID, job status, usage records, or provider support where possible. If retrying is necessary and idempotency is supported, reuse the original key and payload.
  6. Persist the terminal result and stop retrying. Do not let a caller, queue, or SDK silently begin a new logical operation to recover an uncertain one.

Troubleshooting common retry problems

The retry succeeds, but usage increased twice

The first capture may have completed before the client timed out, so the retry created another success. Check request IDs and usage records, then determine whether the endpoint supports idempotency for that route. For future attempts, persist one key per operation and reuse it; without provider-supported idempotency, no client-side timeout policy can guarantee that a fresh request will not duplicate work.

Retries keep returning 429

Honor the server’s Retry-After instead of retrying immediately, lower concurrent requests, and verify that a rate limit has not been confused with monthly quota exhaustion. Check for retry loops in the SDK and queue as well as in your own code.

A 5xx repeats without recovering

Check the provider’s structured error code and current documentation. A 5xx does not automatically mean the same thing across APIs, and a persistent configuration or URL problem may not be transient. Stop at your retry budget and retain the request ID and error details for diagnosis.

The idempotency key is rejected or has no effect

Confirm that the exact endpoint supports idempotency, that the key is within its retention window, and that the payload matches the original request as required. Do not generate a new key for each retry of one capture. If the provider has no documented idempotency support, treat an ambiguous outcome as unresolved and use its reconciliation options rather than assuming duplicate suppression.

For a screenshot API that makes billing outcomes explicit, ScreenshotNeo returns page-verdict and billing headers. Its stated policy is that bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; that policy does not make a client-side retry universally safe, so inspect the response and retain the operation context. The API also accepts parameters used by other screenshot APIs to make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current request contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I retry a timeout if the screenshot API has no idempotency support?

First try to reconcile the original request through a request ID, job-status route, usage records, or provider support. If none is available, the outcome may remain uncertain; a new request could duplicate a successful capture.

Does a 503 always mean a screenshot request is safe to retry?

No. Status-code meaning and billing treatment are provider-specific. Check the endpoint’s documented error code and retry contract before sending another request.
